Title of the Series
Christmas: the Whole Story
Christmas: the Whole Story
Title of the Message this
Morning is:
Week 3: “Glory In The Fields”
Week 3: “Glory In The Fields”
Big Idea:
In the middle of an ordinary night, heaven exploded into song.
The angelic announcement to the shepherds wasn’t just dramatic, it was deeply symbolic.
God chose the least likely audience to hear the greatest news.
This message explores why God reveals Himself to the humble, and how we are called to go and see for ourselves.
God meets us in the ordinary and invites us into the extraordinary.
PRAYER -
“Lord, thank You for meeting us in the ordinary places of life and showing us Your extraordinary glory.
Just as the shepherds hurried to see Jesus and carried the good news to others, help us to go and share Your light with the world.
May our everyday lives reflect Your presence so that others are drawn to the hope and joy of Christ this Christmas.”
Scripture: Luke 2:8–20, Matthew 5:14-16
Think: God often chooses ordinary, overlooked people to accomplish extraordinary purposes.
Feel: Inspired to participate in God’s story, knowing that He meets us where we are.
Do: Look for ways this week to shine God’s light in ordinary, everyday moments.
Sermon:
Good morning, church!
It’s so good to be together as we continue our Advent journey.
Advent is all about waiting, watching, and preparing our hearts for the arrival of Jesus, the One who came in the most surprising way.
We’re in week three of our series, “Christmas: The Whole Story.”
In week one, we looked at the 400 years of silence between the Old and New Testaments.
Even when God seemed quiet, His promises were still alive, waiting for the perfect moment.
In week two, we stepped into the lives of Mary and Joseph, a young couple whose plans were turned upside down.
Yet, in the middle of uncertainty, they trusted God and said “yes” to Him.
Today, we turn to the shepherds in the fields.
The last people anyone would expect to receive heaven’s announcement.
And yet, God broke into their ordinary night with extraordinary news.
Their story reminds us that God still delights in choosing the unlikely, the overlooked, and the unqualified.
If you’ve ever felt like you’re not enough, this week is for you.
God chooses you to carry the good news of Jesus.
STORY:
There’s a classic children’s book called The Best Christmas Pageant Ever.
It tells the story of the Herdman kids, six siblings who were known as the worst kids in town.
They were always in trouble, never went to church, and certainly didn’t know anything about the Bible.
One year, they decided to show up at church because they heard there were snacks.
To everyone’s shock, they ended up taking all the main parts in the Christmas pageant… Mary, Joseph, the Wise Men, and the shepherds.
The church members were horrified.
They expected chaos, and honestly, they expected the whole play to be ruined.
But when the night of the pageant came, something surprising happened.
For the first time, the Herdmans heard the Christmas story and actually stepped into it.
Their raw, unpolished way of acting it out made everyone see the birth of Jesus with fresh eyes.
When Imogene Herdman, who played Mary, held the baby with tears in her eyes, the whole church was moved.
The least likely kids in town ended up telling the story in the most powerful way.
That’s exactly what God did the night Jesus was born.
He didn’t send angels to the palace or the temple.
He sent them to shepherds in the fields, people no one else thought mattered.
As God was telling the whole story of Christmas, somehow the least likely characters get added in.
READ Luke 2:8-12
Can you imagine being those shepherds?
Out in the fields, doing the same thing they did every night—watching sheep, keeping warm by the fire, probably half-asleep.
Nothing exciting ever happened to them.
They were near the bottom of society, considered dirty, unreliable, and unimportant.
And yet, in the middle of an ordinary night, heaven broke wide open.
POINT #1 – GOD CHOOSES THE ORDINARY TO DO THE EXTRAORDINARY
POINT #1 – GOD CHOOSES THE ORDINARY TO DO THE EXTRAORDINARY
The angel’s words must have stunned them: “I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people.”
Not just for the powerful.
Not just for the religious.
Not just for the people who seem to have it all together.
For all the people.
God even gave the shepherds the way to know this was all true.
They would find a baby wrapped in cloths in a dirty, stinky manger.
Think about that.
God didn’t invite them to a palace.
He didn’t direct them to a temple.
He sent them to a stable.
To a baby wrapped in rags.
The location of the Lord Messiah was a sign within itself to confirm the message that God meets us right where we are.
But why does God choose the ordinary?
Because when ordinary people carry extraordinary news, there’s no doubt about who gets the glory.
If the angels had gone to Caesar in Rome or the high priest in Jerusalem, that is what people would have expected.
But shepherds?
People no one else respected?
That leaves no doubt that this is God’s doing, not human achievement.
Scripture says that God chooses the foolish things of the world to shame the wise. (1 Corinthians 1:27)
God isn’t impressed by titles or status, He looks for open hearts.
He delights in using those the world overlooks to put His greatness on display.
STORY:
It’s a little like those handmade Christmas ornaments kids bring home from school or church.
You know the ones with crooked popsicle sticks glued together, maybe some glitter that’s already falling off, a picture glued in the middle that’s a little lopsided.
No one would mistake it for something from a fancy store.
But when a parent unwraps it from the box each year, it becomes one of the most treasured decorations on the tree. Why?
Not because it’s perfect, but because of who made it.
It’s valuable because it’s the work of their child’s hands.
That was how God looked at these shepherds and how he looks at us.
He doesn’t need polished, professional, or perfect.
He delights in the ordinary, the humble, the ones willing to be used.
When God uses us, it’s like hanging our little handmade ornament on the tree of His glory.
When God shares the good news through people like you and me, the world takes notice.
Watch how the shepherds respond to the news about Jesus’ birth.
READ Luke 2:13-20
When the shepherds heard the angel’s message, their response wasn’t hesitation or doubt, it was immediate action.
Verse 15 says, “So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger.”
Think about that: they left the familiarity of their fields, the comfort of routine, and stepped into the unknown. Their ordinary lives were interrupted by the extraordinary, and they ran to see it for themselves.
POINT #2 – GOD’S GLORY MOVES US
POINT #2 – GOD’S GLORY MOVES US
The Greek word for glory here is doxa, which conveys not just brightness or splendor, but the weightiness and power of God’s presence.
This wasn’t just a pretty song in the sky.
The doxa of God, the overwhelming radiance and majesty of heaven, interrupted the ordinary night and compelled the shepherds to act.
The glory they witnessed moved them to move, to go see, to experience, and ultimately to share the good news.
God’s glory often works this way.
It isn’t static or passive.
When we encounter the weight and wonder of God, His doxa, we are called to respond.
Like the shepherds, ordinary people become carriers of extraordinary news whenever they encounter God in a true and authentic way.
That is what Christmas is meant to be about.
We are meant to see and experience the wonder of God through the birth of His son and be moved to want to share it with everyone around us.
STORY:
I remember serving at a church years ago on Christmas Eve.
The service was winding down, and we were about to close with “O Holy Night.”
The lights were dimmed, and every person in the sanctuary held a candle.
As we sang, each flame was passed from person to person, until the entire room was glowing with hundreds of tiny lights.
There was something almost tangible in that moment, a stillness, a beauty, a sense of God’s presence that you could feel in your chest.
It was the doxa of God.
The splendor and weight of His glory filled the room, and I remember being overcome with joy.
I wanted to shout the news from the rooftops, to tell everyone that Jesus had come, just like the shepherds must have felt that first night.
Have you ever encountered Jesus in a way that moved you so powerfully that you couldn’t stay the same?
Maybe it was in a quiet moment of prayer, during worship, through a Scripture that hit your heart.
Like the shepherds, God wants to move us from spectators to participants.
He wants His glory to break into our ordinary lives and transform our routines into encounters with the extraordinary.
That encounter doesn’t always look dramatic, but it always changes us.
Sometimes it’s a quiet whisper in our hearts, other times it’s a moment so overwhelming we can’t help but act.
Later on in the Gospels, during Jesus’ ministry, He tells His listeners that they too can live as lights in the world and carry the glory of God with them.
READ Matthew 5:14-16
The glory that breaks into our lives isn’t meant to stay contained, it’s meant to spill out.
When we encounter Jesus, we carry His light into our neighborhoods, our workplaces, our schools, our families.
We become living beacons of His love and grace.
That “light” isn’t about showing off or drawing attention to ourselves, it’s about pointing others to Him, so that God gets the glory.
POINT #3 – LET YOUR LIGHT SHINE
POINT #3 – LET YOUR LIGHT SHINE
Think about that candlelight service I shared earlier.
Each flame alone was beautiful, but as it was passed from person to person, the light multiplied and filled the room.
That’s exactly what God wants to do with us.
One encounter with His glory can ignite a movement of light and hope in the lives of everyone around us.
This Christmas, think about the people around you who might be walking in darkness.
Maybe your neighbors, coworkers, friends or family are searching for hope.
God doesn’t just want you to experience His glory in a warm, safe place for yourself;
He wants you to carry it to a world that is in need.
Even small acts like a kind word, a note of encouragement, a thoughtful gift can reflect His light in ways we never fully realize.
STORY:
During World War II, in the middle of the darkest days of the London Blitz, a man named Sir Nicholas Winton organized a rescue operation that saved hundreds of children from Nazi-occupied Czechoslovakia.
He worked quietly, without fanfare or recognition, arranging trains, papers, and safe homes for children he had never met.
For decades, no one knew about his efforts—he didn’t seek glory or fame.
Yet, his ordinary acts of courage and compassion brought light into the lives of hundreds of children and countless families.
Just like Sir Nicholas Winton, the shepherds didn’t seek recognition, and yet their obedience and willingness made a massive impact.
God uses ordinary people who are willing to step into the story.
Sometimes, it’s not about what we have or how polished we are, it’s about saying yes to what God asks and allowing His glory to shine through us.
This Christmas, don’t underestimate the power of your ordinary life when it’s surrendered to God.
The glory of God can break into the most unexpected places, and He wants to use you to carry that light.
Let’s pray together.
Salvation:
Salvation:
The Word of God says in: John 3:16
For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.
For “whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.”
If you’d would like to receive Jesus today, please pray this prayer with all of us:
Lord I believe that Jesus is the Son of God, and that He died On the cross for my sins and His resurrection from the dead gives me eternal life. I ask forgiveness of my sins, and I accept Jesus as my Lord and Savior. Amen.

Praying for the 10-40 Window
The "10/40 Window" refers to an area stretching from North Africa through the Middle East to East Asia.
Coined in 1989, this area is significant in some Christian missionary contexts because it is home to a high concentration of the world's least evangelized people groups and is also home to the majority of the world's poorest people.

Benediction Scripture
“You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. 16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.
