An Advent Sermon on
Isaiah 41:17-20
Me: Seasons of life that are barren
Droughts in the West and the need for rain.
Seasons when faith feels dry, empty, and exhausting
• Doing the right things but sensing no life or growth
• Wondering if God is present or silent
We: Trying to work our way out of those barren seasons and failing
• Spiritual dryness is common
• We try to fix ourselves through effort, discipline, or distraction
• Beneath it all, we are poor and needy and out of resources
Fallen Condition Focus
• We are spiritually poor and needy and cannot save or nourish ourselves
God: God as the one who will not forsake the poor and needy
Context
• Spoken to exiles who feel abandoned and depleted
• A word of encouragement, not condemnation
God’s Action
• God hears the cry of the poor and needy
• God initiates salvation and restoration
• Repeated “I will” shows God as the sole actor
Promise
• Rivers in high places
• Springs in dry valleys
• Wilderness transformed into life-giving space
• Purpose: so all may see and know the Lord has done this
Fulfillment in Christ
• Jesus is the living water
• Spiritual blessing poured out through him (
Ephesians 1:3
)
• God meets our deepest need in Christ
You: How to respond to the God who gives nourishment of soul
• Know it is only God who can nourish your soul
• Bring emptiness honestly before God
• Trust that God hears and responds
Receive God’s nourishment
Know that he will bring goodness to you in Christ.
We
• A Church that trusts in God’s deliverance
• Live as a testament that God does not forsake his people
• Called to tell others about a God who delivers and restores
• Hope grounded in what the Lord has done and will do
We come to God poor and thirsty, we long for and trust that the one who will, in Christ, turn our deserts into places of life when he comes again.
