Read Text: Isaiah 9:6
For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: And the government shall be upon his shoulder: And his name shall be called Wonderful, Counseller, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.
Title: His Name
Introduction: Throughout history, there have been certain names that when mentioned bring up different emotions and reactions. When you think about good names, you might think of names like Mother Teresa, George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Ghandi, and many others. When you think about bad names, you might think of people like Hitler, Stalin, Napoleon, or Putin.
But there is one name that stands alone. A name that is like no other. A name that when spoken to a believer brings peace and comfort, but when spoken to an unbeliever could bring any range of negative emotions.
This name is unlike any other in that it is the only name that mankind can call upon and be saved. It is a name that God Himself chose. A name that is exalted and whose owner is worshipped. A name that when you say it, it brings peace, joy, strength. A name that caused an entire army of Roman soldiers to fall on their back in the garden. A name that I believe Bill and Gloria Gaither described wonderfully, in that there is just something about that name.
While we could go on and on about that name, a name is just a description. It is an identifier. Imagine trying to get someone’s attention but they have no name. Or telling others about that person and you have no name to identify them by.
You see, we don’t worship a name, we worship a person. But that person has a name. His name is Jesus. The name “Jesus” is what it is and means what it means because of the person. The name doesn’t give value to the person, the person gave value to the name.
It is at the name of Jesus and Jesus alone that man is saved. Acts 4:12 — Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.
It is at the name of Jesus that every knee will bow and every tongue will confess. Philippians 2:10–11 — That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
Transition: In our verse this morning, we see five names that are given to describe one person…Jesus. Today, we want to consider the first three. Next week, we will consider the final two. But remember, a name describes something about someone. In the Bible, names are important…they have meaning. Notice with me some of His names.
I. He is Wonderful
What does it mean for Him to be wonderful? Have you ever seen a child totally captivated by something? They are just starstruck!
Wonder at His…
A. His Birth
Notice our text.
B. His Words
Luke 4:22 “And all bare him witness, and wondered at the gracious words which proceeded out of his mouth. And they said, Is not this Joseph’s son?”
They wondered not just at what He said, but how He said.
B. His Life
1 Peter 2:22 “Who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth:”
C. His Death
2 Corinthians 5:21 “For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.” 1 Peter 3:18 “For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit:”
II. He is Counseller
A. We Need His Counsel
Why do we need His counsel?
(1) Our Heart Is Wicked
Jeremiah 17:9 — The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?
(2) We Don’t Know Our Heart
Have you ever said, “I don’t know why I feel this way”? Or “I don’t know why I am doing this”? If you have, it is because you don’t know the depths of your own heart.
(3) We are Limited in Our Knowledge
Isaiah 55:8 For my thoughts are not your thoughts, Neither are your ways my ways, saith the Lord.
Our limits lead us to His limitlessness.
B. We Must Seek For His Counsel
Proverbs 2:1–5 — My son, if thou wilt receive my words, And hide my commandments with thee; So that thou incline thine ear unto wisdom, And apply thine heart to understanding; Yea, if thou criest after knowledge, And liftest up thy voice for understanding; If thou seekest her as silver, And searchest for her as for hid treasures; Then shalt thou understand the fear of the Lord, And find the knowledge of God.
III. He Is Mighty God
A. His Deity
John 1:1 “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” 1 Timothy 3:16 “And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.”
B. His Power
(1) Creation
Colossians 1:16–17 “For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.”
(2) Miracles
Luke 4:36 — And they were all amazed, and spake among themselves, saying, What a word is this! for with authority and power he commandeth the unclean spirits, and they come out.
(3) Resurrection
Matthew 28:6 “He is not here: for he is risen, as he said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay.” Revelation 1:18 “I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death.”
(4) Salvation
Romans 1:16 — For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.

“And when He had given thanks” – Gary Pray
(v. 24) “…he brake it, and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me.”
EAT BREAD
Read: 1 Corinthians 11:25 After the same manner also he took the cup…
Tommy Pray
“…This cup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me.
Drink Juice
Matthew 26:29-30 But I say unto you, I will not drink henceforth of this fruit of the vine, until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father's kingdom. [30] And when they had sung an hymn, they went out into the mount of Olives.
Psalms 118:23-29 This is the LORD'S doing; it is marvellous in our eyes. [24] This is the day which the LORD hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it. [25] Save now, I beseech thee, O LORD: O LORD, I beseech thee, send now prosperity. [26] Blessed be he that cometh in the name of the LORD: we have blessed you out of the house of the LORD. [27] God is the LORD, which hath shewed us light: bind the sacrifice with cords, even unto the horns of the altar. [28] Thou art my God, and I will praise thee: thou art my God, I will exalt thee. [29] O give thanks unto the LORD; for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever.
