Zephaniah - God hides
Royal family
Israel in decline and distress but they still have a Davidic king
Isaiah 3:4–6 ESV
4 And I will make boys their princes, and infants shall rule over them. 5 And the people will oppress one another, every one his fellow and every one his neighbor; the youth will be insolent to the elder, and the despised to the honorable. 6 For a man will take hold of his brother in the house of his father, saying: “You have a cloak; you shall be our leader, and this heap of ruins shall be under your rule”;
The day of the Lord
Josiah - King at 8

God’s indictment: Idolatry and Complacency in Wealth

Of Judah
Because of idol worship and divided worship
Royal government
of Idolatry, violence and fraud
Complacent in their wealth

God’s certain judgment demands silence rather than defensiveness

No defense before the day of the Lord
Of creation
The day of judgment is near and will be bitter
All mankind will be as blind
Wealth shall not avail them
A jealous God will make a full and sudden end

Seek the Lord and escape judgment

Seek righteousness and humility
Perhaps you may stay hidden as disaster reigns down
Zephaniah - God hides
Colossian 3:3-4
1 Thess 5:4-11
Revelation 3:10 ESV
10 Because you have kept my word about patient endurance, I will keep you from the hour of trial that is coming on the whole world, to try those who dwell on the earth.
Romans 10:6–13 ESV
6 But the righteousness based on faith says, “Do not say in your heart, ‘Who will ascend into heaven?’ ” (that is, to bring Christ down) 7 “or ‘Who will descend into the abyss?’ ” (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead). 8 But what does it say? “The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart” (that is, the word of faith that we proclaim); 9 because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved. 11 For the Scripture says, “Everyone who believes in him will not be put to shame.” 12 For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; for the same Lord is Lord of all, bestowing his riches on all who call on him. 13 For “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”

Because the Lord delights in deliverance
