Faith That Endures: Finding Joy in Trials
Faith That Endures: Finding Joy in Trials
Bible Passage: James 1:1-18
Bible Passage: James 1:1-18
Hebrews 4:12–13 “For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. And no creature is hidden from his sight, but all are naked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must give account.”
Ephesians 6:17 “... and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God,”
2 Timothy 3:16–17 “All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.”
The Mark of Spiritual Maturity
Summary: James 1:1-18 emphasizes the importance of embracing trials as opportunities for growth, highlighting that faith tested produces perseverance and completeness.
Application: This study can help Christians understand that trials are not only unavoidable but also beneficial for spiritual maturity, encouraging them to view their struggles as a means to deepen their faith and reliance on God.
Teaching: The study teaches that genuine faith is resilient and can withstand the trials of life, equipping believers to face challenges with joy and hope in God's plan for their lives.
How this passage points to Christ: In the context of Scripture, this passage highlights Christ's own sufferings and how He persevered through trials, ultimately providing believers with a model of faithfulness and an assurance that they are not alone in their struggles.
Big Idea: Genuine faith thrives in the face of trials, producing perseverance that leads to spiritual maturity and completeness in Christ.
1. Joy in the Journeys of Life
1. Joy in the Journeys of Life
James 1:2-4
Question: What is Joy?
Answer: a feeling of great pleasure or happiness that comes from success, good fortune, or a sense of well-being: gladness Webster Dictionary
It is a Fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22–23 “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.”)
When we face “trials of various kinds,” is our first thought to have JOY? Often times no, we complain about every little thing that goes wrong in our lives. Which the Word of God condemns in Philippians 2:14 “Do all things without grumbling or disputing,”
Let us ask the Holy Spirit to change our hearts to see trials and hardships as an opportunity for spiritual maturity, reaching “that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.” Giving God thanks for every situation.
Scripture that comes to mind is Philippians 3:12–19 “Not that I have already obtained this or am already perfect, but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own. Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. Let those of us who are mature think this way, and if in anything you think otherwise, God will reveal that also to you. Only let us hold true to what we have attained. Brothers, join in imitating me, and keep your eyes on those who walk according to the example you have in us. For many, of whom I have often told you and now tell you even with tears, walk as enemies of the cross of Christ. Their end is destruction, their god is their belly, and they glory in their shame, with minds set on earthly things.”
Even though this passage discusses righteousness through Christ, I believe it still applies to this. Every day, we should strive to grow in our maturity in Christ. Every trial should be looked at as a test of their faith, and with that test, perseverance in Jesus is produced. How different would you view hardships if you’ve gone through a hard season relying on Christ for your Joy? Practically, the next trial would be “easier” for us because we’ve experienced God’s faithfulness and have suffered just as Jesus has, our example.
Let us yield to God’s will and sovereignty and let His Holy Spirit fill us with Joy and Peace that passes all understanding. Holy Spirit, transform us to be more like you. (Let it be so) Amen.
2. Wisdom By Faith
2. Wisdom By Faith
James 1:5-8
“Can someone who does not believe in God think that he will receive anything from Him?” Obviously, there is a belief already implied when we pray to God because we must believe He is real and that He hears our prayers. Someone who does not believe in God is not going to ask Him for anything.
Matthew 9:28–29 “When he entered the house, the blind men came to him, and Jesus said to them, “Do you believe that I am able to do this?” They said to him, “Yes, Lord.” Then he touched their eyes, saying, “According to your faith be it done to you.””
I believe that through our faith in Jesus, we receive anything we ask, if it is according to God’s will. Spiritual Maturity also plays in here, when we align our hearts with God, we want His will to be done.
Scripture states in Isaiah 55:8–9 “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.”
Has our selfishness has choked out our prayers? Let us be unselfish and trust in God’s Will and Promises, because His ways and thoughts are better than ours. In this passage, we see James exhorting those he wrote to. Let us ask for divine wisdom with unwavering faith, we know that wisdom only comes from God. The Bible actually teaches that we should not think of ourselves as wise. Romans 12:16 “Live in harmony with one another. Do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly. Never be wise in your own sight.”
Proverbs 3:7 “Be not wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord, and turn away from evil.”
Let us examine our hearts and turn away from our prideful and arrogant way of thinking that WE are wise by our own accord; rather, let us remember that God has chosen to reveal to us His wisdom. It is not a bad thing to seek wisdom, but let us not steal the Glory from God when we receive it. God gives it generously without reproach. (reviling, mocking)
I believe that this wisdom from the Lord will help us in complex situations that may arise. When the trials pass, and we look back at the Lord's faithfulness, let us give glory to God and God alone. God’s guidance is always available to aid us in the perseverance of our adversities.
Let us not be unstable in our ways but hold fast to the Lord who is our refuge and strength. Psalm 46:1 “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.”
3. Endurance with and through Christ produces LIFE
3. Endurance with and through Christ produces LIFE
James 1:9-12
“Let the lowly brother boast in his exaltation, and the rich in his humiliation...”
Whether we are rich or poor, let us not forget our place before God.
The poor are exalted by Christ, and the rich are humbled by Christ. Everything on Earth here withers away. Instead of focusing on the things of this world, James encourages us to remain focused and persevere with Christ. When we do this, and we remain steadfast under trial, and withstand the test (not by our own doing but through the empowerment of the Holy Spirit), we will receive the crown of life, wOftentimeshich is not a literal crown but the reward of eternity through Jesus.
It is not by works either; Christ saves us, perseveres us, produces steadfastness in us, and rewards His own work in us.
So let us have hope in Christ our redeemer.
4. Temptation births Sin and Sin births Death
4. Temptation births Sin and Sin births Death
James 1:13-15
God does not tempt us, but He does test us. There are so many examples throughout the Bible, but the story of Job comes to mind.
“for God cannot be tempted with evil..” My first thought is what about Jesus being tempted in the wilderness by Satan? Jesus was fully God and fully man. Jesus had two natures: a divine nature and a human nature. Jesus was tempted in His human nature, but was not in his divine nature. His human nature could feel hunger, pain, sorrow, etc, and also be tempted but yet be without sin. Hebrews 4:15 “For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin.” Jesus was tempted in every way we were, but DID NOT SIN. Jesus came to do what Adam could not; that is why He is referred to as the “Second Adam.”
We inherit the original sin of Adam, but since Jesus was born of a virgin and conceived by the Holy Spirit, He did not inherit the Sinful nature of man, because he is not an offspring of Adam, but rather the Holy Spirit.
James tells us, though, that Sin is born through temptation and we are enticed by our own desire, which leads to sin. Sin, which leads to death. Romans 6:23 “For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Every sin that we commit comes from our desires. Let us examine our motives and ask the Holy Spirit to guard our hearts. “23 Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it. 24 Keep your mouth free of perversity; keep corrupt talk far from your lips.”
Pr 4:23–24.
We must recognize that sin arises from our own desires, and we must take accountability and accept that, apart from Jesus, we are not righteous. Romans 3:10 “as it is written: 'None is righteous, no, not one;” With that, we must also rely on the Holy Spirit to align our desires with the Lord's. The Holy Spirit can empower us to resist sin.
Jesus quoted scripture when being tempted. Do we do the same thing? Let us challenge one another to memorize scripture so that when we are tempted, we are reminded by the Holy Spirit of the scripture written on our hearts. Psalm 119:11 “I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.” Psalm 119:105 “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”
We should encourage one another to keep growing in our spiritual maturity Hebrews 10:24 “And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works,”
I am reminded of Peter’s encouragement to those he wrote to in his epistle 2 Peter 1:3–15
“His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us to his own glory and excellence, by which he has granted to us his precious and very great promises, so that through them you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped from the corruption that is in the world because of sinful desire. For this very reason, make every effort to supplement your faith with virtue, and virtue with knowledge, and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with steadfastness, and steadfastness with godliness, and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love. For if these qualities are yours and are increasing, they keep you from being ineffective or unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. For whoever lacks these qualities is so nearsighted that he is blind, having forgotten that he was cleansed from his former sins. Therefore, brothers, be all the more diligent to confirm your calling and election, for if you practice these qualities you will never fall. For in this way there will be richly provided for you an entrance into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Therefore I intend always to remind you of these qualities, though you know them and are established in the truth that you have. I think it right, as long as I am in this body, to stir you up by way of reminder, since I know that the putting off of my body will be soon, as our Lord Jesus Christ made clear to me. And I will make every effort so that after my departure you may be able at any time to recall these things.”
5. Gifts from God's Goodness
5. Gifts from God's Goodness
James 1:16-18
Every good gift comes from above… Think of God’s goodness in our own lives. Let us remember all of the things He has brought us through. Even in the trials and tribulations, God is still good. If we look at every trial as a gift from the Lord to grow closer to Him, how different would our lives look? Shame on us if our lives would look dramatically different.
We are adopted by Him and are his firstfruits; we are a chosen race. 1 Peter 2:9 “But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.” Do not take this lightly. We were bought with a price, 1 Corinthians 6:20 “for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.” We were bought by the blood of Christ. There is no variation or shadow due to change. He is the same, and never changes. Hebrews 13:8 “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.”
Lord, your name is great; You are the alpha and omega, the beginning and the end. You never change, and You never will. Lord, we lift you up and praise you for your marvelous works, your faithfulness, and your goodness. Lord, we pray that your will would be done in our lives and that our thoughts and desires would align with yours. Lord, we ask humbly that your Holy Spirit would convict our hearts of anything that is keeping us from worshipping you in spirit and in truth. Forgive us of our sins and allow us to forgive those who sin against us. Lord, empower us to live our lives with great joy that only you can give. We praise you for the trials and tribulations we may face because we know that it will strengthen our faith and produce steadfastness. Lord, we also thank you for the mountain tops of life. We thank you, Lord, for always being there and always hearing our pleas to you. Lord, we give you the honor and glory for everything you’re doing and that you’re going to do. In Jesus’ name we ask that it would be so, Amen.
