The birth of Jesus Christ tells us that God sent His Son, born miraculously to a virgin named Mary who was betrothed to a carpenter named Joseph in the town of Bethlehem which fulfilled the prophecy of the coming Messiah.
We see that an angel of the Lord announced to Mary that she would conceive through the Holy Spirit. Joseph would have a dream that he was not to divorce her nor have relations with her until the birth of the child.
We see the shepherds out in the field visited by a heavenly host telling them that a savior is born.
The magi who followed a star and visited the boy when he was around two bringing a multitude of expensive gifts.
A humble savior born for all, marking the beginning of the modern church history.
All of this signified Christ as both 100% divine and 100% human.
All of this giving Him the name Eternal Father.
I know our tummy is growling, so let’s get straight into our verse for today.
Isaiah 9:6 CSB
For a child will be born for us, a son will be given to us, and the government will be on his shoulders. He will be named Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace.
Let’s pray.
Eternal Father has a specific meaning when speaking of Jesus.
He is both the Son born in time as the infant we are celebrating and infinite, eternal God who possesses all eternity in His hands. He offers us eternal life, eternal fatherly care, eternal forgiveness and an eternal relationship with Him.
This title reveals to us the divine identity of Christ as the second part of the trinity. God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit.
This title also shows us that He is the source of all things, the provider of all things and the protector of all things.
Let’s explore this title a bit more.
Eternal Father:
Possessor of Eternity
Jesus isn’t just in time; He is eternity, the infinite One who inhabits forever.
Imagine this, the baby born in a simple manger to the one who died on the cross, held the past, present and future in His hands.
Jude 25 CSB
to the only God our Savior, through Jesus Christ our Lord, be glory, majesty, power, and authority before all time, now and forever. Amen.
The Apostle Peter understood the importance of this revelation.
2 Peter 3:18 CSB
But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be the glory both now and to the day of eternity.
I explain this a bit more later
Not only is He the possessor of all eternity, as
Eternal Father:
2. Everlasting Provider
He is the source of everlasting life and salvation. This is given freely to all those who seek Him.
Philippians 4:19 CSB
And my God will supply all your needs according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.
Jesus is the ultimate source of our spiritual sustenance, eternal security, and provision for all needs, not just temporarily, but forever.
Eternal Father:
3. Fountain of Compassion
Christ offers us deep, compassionate care, forgiveness, and restoration to His people. He did this by leaving glory to be born as a baby and died upon a cross to remove the barrier of sin.
Philippians 2:8 CSB
he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death— even to death on a cross.
Wood for the Fire
I said earlier that Peter understood this revelation of Jesus as Eternal Father.
For our application of the word today, I want to go back to this point.
Peter as most of you know is my favorite Apostle because he was a complete disciple and a complete goofball.
And the start of our next series we will really dive into Peter and Paul and their journeys
But today, Peter tells us to grow in the grace and knowledge of Jesus.
This means we are to understand each title Christ holds.
Eternal Father is a title that should mean so much to each of us.
Because it means He holds all the characteristics of a good good father.
A good father is someone who is present, supportive, and reliable role model who provides unconditional love, teaches strong values (like kindness, honesty, and respect), and actively engages in his children’s lives through listening, quality time, and showing affection, all while balancing fun with necessary discipline and teaching responsibility.
He teaches qualities like being dependable, patience, compassion, and being a positive example of how to treat others.
Most people see Christ as this mean fellow that wants you to go to hell because you are bad.
No He is the Eternal Father that wants you in heaven with Him. That is why we celebrate this season. Because He left glory to be born here and to die for our sins.
We take the time each year, we give out gifts to those we love and some just out of obligation.
The ultimate gift is the Eternal Father. All we have to do is accept that gift.
