CHAPEL TALK 4

Responsibility Series (CHERISH) Scripture: Matthew 5:13–16 Main Idea: Responsibility includes the impact your words, choices, and presence have on others.

1. INTRODUCTION — (1 minute)

Today we are talking about… Responsibility for the impact you make on others.

Jesus made it clear: You are either making things better… or worse. Brighter… or darker. More salty… or bland.

2. SCRIPTURE: Matthew 5:13–16 — (2 minutes)

Jesus says:

“You are the salt of the earth.” Salt changes everything it touches. It preserves. It improves. In ancient times, salt was valuable because it made things better.

“You are the light of the world.” Light transforms the way people see. It pushes back darkness. It gives clarity, safety, and direction.

Then Jesus finishes with: “Let your light shine… that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.”

Translation: You have influence — use it well.

Influence is not optional. Impact is not optional. Being a follower of Jesus means being responsible for the effect your life has on others.

3. TRUE STORY — “The Compliment Project” (3 minutes)

This is a true story from a high school in Anaheim, California.

A girl named Kaitlyn started something called “The Compliment Project.” She noticed something: Her school felt heavy. People were stressed, insecure, quiet, withdrawn.

So she printed simple sheets of paper and taped them to classroom doors. Each sheet had one title: “Take What You Need.”

Below that were tear-off slips with words like:

Hope

Courage

Kindness

Strength

Patience

Joy

Confidence

Students took them. Then they started giving them to other people. They wrote encouraging notes. They taped positive messages around campus. They complimented strangers.

Within WEEKS… the atmosphere of the school changed.

Cuts in bullying. Better attitudes. More kindness in the halls. Teachers said the “emotional temperature” of the school literally shifted.

But here’s the wild part:

It all started with one student who decided to take responsibility for her impact.

One person. One small idea. Big change.

4. CONNECTION — (1 minute)

Just like Kaitlyn’s decision changed a campus, your decisions change your world.

You influence every room you enter:

your friend group

your classroom

your sports team

your family

your online presence

The question is not whether you influence. The question is what kind of influence you bring.

5. TEACHING: HOW TO OWN YOUR IMPACT — (4 minutes)

1. Your words carry weight.

Words can heal or hurt. Lift or crush. Build or destroy. Responsible people think before they speak.

Ask: “Does what I’m about to say make the moment better or worse?”

2. Your choices shape the culture around you.

If you join in gossip, the group gets darker. If you shut it down, the group gets brighter. If you refuse to cheat, others notice. If you serve, others follow.

Culture shifts when one person chooses responsibility.

3. Your example influences people who never told you they were watching.

Younger students watch you. Your siblings watch you. Friends watch you.

Integrity is contagious. So is disrespect. You are modeling something every day.

4. Your presence sets the tone.

Some people walk into a room and make it calmer. Some make it louder. Some make it kinder. Some make it crueler.

A responsible Christ-follower says: “When I walk in, I want the room to get better, not worse.”

6. ENGAGEMENT MOMENT — (1 minute)

Ask students:

“Think about your closest friend group. What kind of influence do YOU bring into that space — and what kind do you WANT to bring?”

Give them 10–15 seconds to reflect.

Then ask: “Who influenced you positively this month?” (Hands raise or quick popcorn answers.)

7. PRACTICAL CHALLENGE — “One Thing Today” (1 minute)

Ask students to choose one of the following today:

Encourage someone who’s struggling

Refuse to join in gossip

Thank a teacher or staff member

Sit with someone who’s alone

Apologize where needed

Pray with a friend

One step of responsibility can set a new direction for your whole life.

8. CLOSING — (45 seconds)

Jesus didn’t say try to be salt and light. He said you are salt and light. So own the influence He has given you.

Pray something like:

“Jesus, help us see the impact we have. Make us salt. Make us light. Teach us to take responsibility for the culture we create. Use our lives to point others toward You.”
