Wisdom of God v13, 17-18

James 3:13 “Who is a wise man and endued with knowledge among you? let him shew out of a good conversation his works with meekness of wisdom.”
Hebrews & James 1. A Challenge to Demonstrate Wisdom in Behavior (v. 13)

The opening rhetorical question asks how we can show that we have wisdom. Wise refers to someone with moral insight and skill in deciding practical issues of conduct.

ἐπιστήμων (...endued with knowledge...)
= to being knowledgeable in a way that makes one effectual in the exercise of such knowledge, expert, learned, understanding
The thought here is that in these times there was not way to “fact check” the preachers that come through. If one that came through was wise and endued with knowledge, let him show it with a good lifestyle and with meekness.
= the expert in σοφία will be verified by quality of performance
James defines wisdom as something that is proven long before it is spoken.
True wisdom and knowledge are not announced or defended through words, but are displayed through a consistent manner of life marked by meekness. This is why James calls for wisdom to be shown, not claimed.
Paul’s life provides a living illustration of this principle. When Paul speaks of his purity, sincerity, and motives, he does so only after those qualities have already been visible among the churches. His appeals are never rooted in self-promotion but in humility, conscience, and faithfulness to Christ.
Even when forced to speak in his own defense, Paul frames it as reluctant and constrained, emphasizing weakness rather than strength.
In this way, Paul does not soften James’ standard but confirms it. A life shaped by meekness minimizes the need for explanation, and when explanation becomes necessary, it rests on a pattern of conduct that has already borne witness to the truth.
James 3:17–18But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy. And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace of them that make peace.”
Pure
Peaceable
Gentle
Easy to be intreated
Full of mercy and good fruits
Without partiality
Without hypocrisy
And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace of them that make peace.

Wisdom of this World v14-16

James 3:14–16 “But if ye have bitter envying and strife in your hearts, glory not, and lie not against the truth. This wisdom descendeth not from above, but is earthly, sensual, devilish. For where envying and strife is, there is confusion and every evil work.”
