His Name!

Jesus: The Name Above All Names

Bible Passage: Matthew 1:21-22

The word name is defined as a word or phrase that constitutes the distinctive designation of a person, place, or thing. Our names hold our personal identity, our family history, and culture.

Our name is something that was given to us at birth, that no one can take away from us in life, and after death, will be all that remains!

People are known and remembered by their name! Your name has the potential to reach a person's ears, before their eyes ever meet you. Your name, bears the weight of your personality and your character! For it is who you are and what you do that determines whether you will have a good name, or a bad name! There are some names that carry more weight and significance than others because of who that person is and what they have achieved and accomplished in life!

The hymn writer wrote, “There is a name, I love to hear, I love to sing it’s worth! It sounds like music in my ear; the sweetest name on earth! Oh, how I love Jesus! Oh, how I love Jesus! Oh, how I love Jesus! Because He first loved me!

The Bible declares that the name of the Lord is a strong tower! The righteous runneth into it, and is safe!

As we move towards the birth fo Christ, our text gives an account of the miraculous conception of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

1. Proclaimed Promise of Salvation

Matthew 1:21 “And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.””

The angel told Joseph, you shall call His name “Jesus”, for He shall save His people from their sins! His name spoke to who He was before His life was witnessed! The name Jesus means “Savior" or “God Saves"! That’s why I used to hear my mama call on that name. Sometimes she wouldn’t say nothing else, just Jesus! And that’s all she needed to say, because she realized that God was her Savior! She realized that if nobody else could do it, God can! That’s why I get excited when I hear His name because I know that to the upmost, Jesus saves!

That’s why I love to call on the name of Jesus! Because it means God saves! You see God’s got the power and the ability to get you out of some stuff that you can’t get yourself out of! You can call Ken Nugent and Mike Hostillo, and even the Ghostbusters, but every now and then you’ll find yourself in a situation where there's no other name to call but on the name of Jesus! Ken and Mike might be alright, but Jesus, is a lawyer who has never lost a case! The Ghostbusters were good, but there are some things, that their proton packs can’t get rid of! But at the name of Jesus! The Bible says demons tremble! You called on mama, and mama couldn’t do it! You called on daddy, but daddy couldn’t do it! You called on sister and brother, but they couldn’t do it. I wonder if there’s anybody in here that was ever in need of a rescue, and you called on the name of Jesus! Didn't He come see about you! Didn't He come to your rescue?! Didn’t He work it out?! Didn’t He make a way?! Didn’t He open doors?! Didn’t He plead your case?! Didn’t He heal your body?!

2. Prophecy Fulfilled in Christ

Matthew 1:22 “So all this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying:”

So it stands to reason, that if His name was Immanuel then, His name is still Immanuel today!!! Because when Jesus was preparing to go to the cross, He told His disciples, that He was going away, but not to worry, because He would not leave us comfort less, but He would give as another helper.

Conclusion

His name is Wonderful, Counselor, The Mighty God, The Everlasting Father,The Prince of Peace!

His name is El Elyon, which means “Most High God"

HHiS name is El Shaddai, which means “God Almighty “

HHiS name is Adonai because He is Lord and Master!

His name is Jehovah Jireh, the Lord will Provide

HHiS name is Jehovah Rapha, because He is, the God who Heals!

His name is Jehovah Shalom, The Lord is Peace!

His name is Jehovah Nissi, The Lord is my banner and protection.

His name is Jehovah Sharman, because whenever I need Him, He’s always there!

His name is Jehovah Raah, because the Lord is my Shepherd!

Philippians 2:9–11 “Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”
