Context
Context
· Previously, Matthew has taken steps to give precise ways that Jesus fulfills the promises of the Old Testament prophets.
· But Matthew goes a step further by showing us that the entirety of the Scripture is Christ-shaped, not merely Christ-centered.
o The whole Bible is a book about the redemption of man by God through His Son Jesus Christ…from Genesis to Revelation.
§ This concept is called biblical theology.
· Longer definition: Biblical theology is a way of analyzing and synthesizing the Bible that makes organic, salvation-historical connections with the whole canon on its own terms, especially regarding how the Old and New Testaments progress, integrate, and climax in Christ.

· We will see that the events of the story, while important in the life of Jesus, are much more important in terms of the patterns they fulfill in God’s grand story of redemption.

“Now when they had departed, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, “Rise, take the child and his mother, and flee to Egypt, and remain there until I tell you, for Herod is about to search for the child, to destroy him.” And he rose and took the child and his mother by night and departed to Egypt and remained there until the death of Herod. This was to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet, “Out of Egypt I called my son.”” (Matthew 2:13–15)
13 Now when they had departed, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, “Rise, take the child and his mother, and flee to Egypt, and remain there until I tell you, for Herod is about to search for the child, to destroy him.”
14 And he rose and took the child and his mother by night and departed to Egypt
15 and remained there until the death of Herod. This was to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet, “Out of Egypt I called my son.”
· This story is a direct continuation from the visit of the Magi.
o They returned by a different way then they came, because they had been warned in a dream not to return to Herod.
·
· What we see through the message of the angel to Joseph is God’s sovereign intervention to preserve and protect Jesus Christ during His vulnerable infancy.
· And again, Joseph’s exemplary character is demonstrated to us in that he promptly moves to obey the angelic command, taking his family to Egypt.
· Egypt was a natural choice because it was home to the largest population of Jews outside of Judea.
· But in the grand story of God, Jesus’s sojourn in Egypt fulfills a much greater purpose.
· Matthew explains that this fulfills what was spoken by the prophet Hosea in Hosea 11:1

· At first glance, this seems confusing, because this isn’t a prophecy…it speaks of Israel’s past.
o So, how can Jesus fulfill something that doesn’t need fulfillment?
· When referencing the OT, matthew is not making a reference to a single verse, but to the broader context of the passage.

1 When Israel was a child, I loved him, and out of Egypt I called my son.
2 The more they were called, the more they went away; they kept sacrificing to the Baals and burning offerings to idols.
3 Yet it was I who taught Ephraim to walk; I took them up by their arms, but they did not know that I healed them.
4 I led them with cords of kindness, with the bands of love, and I became to them as one who eases the yoke on their jaws, and I bent down to them and fed them.
5 They shall not return to the land of Egypt, but Assyria shall be their king, because they have refused to return to me.
6 The sword shall rage against their cities, consume the bars of their gates, and devour them because of their own counsels.
7 My people are bent on turning away from me, and though they call out to the Most High, he shall not raise them up at all.
8 How can I give you up, O Ephraim? How can I hand you over, O Israel? How can I make you like Admah? How can I treat you like Zeboiim? My heart recoils within me; my compassion grows warm and tender.

Matthew is telling us that Jesus is a second chance for unfaithful Israel. He is another Moses and another Israel being brought out through a second exodus.
Through his flight into Egypt, Matthew is pointing us to the reality that Jesus Christ is the promised Messiah who will deliver His people.
Deliverance is found in Jesus Christ alone

“Then Herod, when he saw that he had been tricked by the wise men, became furious, and he sent and killed all the male children in Bethlehem and in all that region who were two years old or under, according to the time that he had ascertained from the wise men. Then was fulfilled what was spoken by the prophet Jeremiah: “A voice was heard in Ramah, weeping and loud lamentation, Rachel weeping for her children; she refused to be comforted, because they are no more.”” (Matthew 2:16–18)

· The middle part of this story is taken up with the horrific actions of Herod in response to the birth of Jesus.
· Realizing the Magi had failed to return filled Herod with murderous anger and he set himself upon a course that he believed would secure his throne.
o Last week, we took some time to acknowledge the irrationality of Herod’s anger and hostility towards God, and that irrationality is on full display here.
· His barbarity goes above and beyond the call here; having even boys as old as two put to death just in case.
· Matthew declares that this terrible event fulfilled the prophecy of Jeremiah 31:15.
15 Thus says the Lord: “A voice is heard in Ramah, lamentation and bitter weeping. Rachel is weeping for her children; she refuses to be comforted for her children, because they are no more.”
o Again, this passage in context is not dealing with a far distant future event, but with the exile.
o However, if one reads Jeremiah 31, we don’t read about tragedy but hope.
o Jeremiah 31 looks forward to the day when the Lord restores His people.

2 Thus says the Lord: “The people who survived the sword found grace in the wilderness; when Israel sought for rest,
3 the Lord appeared to him from far away. I have loved you with an everlasting love; therefore I have continued my faithfulness to you.
4 Again I will build you, and you shall be built, O virgin Israel! Again you shall adorn yourself with tambourines and shall go forth in the dance of the merrymakers.
5 Again you shall plant vineyards on the mountains of Samaria; the planters shall plant and shall enjoy the fruit.
6 For there shall be a day when watchmen will call in the hill country of Ephraim: ‘Arise, and let us go up to Zion, to the Lord our God.’ ”
7 For thus says the Lord: “Sing aloud with gladness for Jacob, and raise shouts for the chief of the nations; proclaim, give praise, and say, ‘O Lord, save your people, the remnant of Israel.’
8 Behold, I will bring them from the north country and gather them from the farthest parts of the earth, among them the blind and the lame, the pregnant woman and she who is in labor, together; a great company, they shall return here.
9 With weeping they shall come, and with pleas for mercy I will lead them back, I will make them walk by brooks of water, in a straight path in which they shall not stumble, for I am a father to Israel, and Ephraim is my firstborn.
10 “Hear the word of the Lord, O nations, and declare it in the coastlands far away; say, ‘He who scattered Israel will gather him, and will keep him as a shepherd keeps his flock.’
11 For the Lord has ransomed Jacob and has redeemed him from hands too strong for him.
12 They shall come and sing aloud on the height of Zion, and they shall be radiant over the goodness of the Lord, over the grain, the wine, and the oil, and over the young of the flock and the herd; their life shall be like a watered garden, and they shall languish no more.
13 Then shall the young women rejoice in the dance, and the young men and the old shall be merry. I will turn their mourning into joy; I will comfort them, and give them gladness for sorrow.
14 I will feast the soul of the priests with abundance, and my people shall be satisfied with my goodness, declares the Lord.”
15 Thus says the Lord: “A voice is heard in Ramah, lamentation and bitter weeping. Rachel is weeping for her children; she refuses to be comforted for her children, because they are no more.”
16 Thus says the Lord: “Keep your voice from weeping, and your eyes from tears, for there is a reward for your work, declares the Lord, and they shall come back from the land of the enemy.
17 There is hope for your future, declares the Lord, and your children shall come back to their own country.
18 I have heard Ephraim grieving, ‘You have disciplined me, and I was disciplined, like an untrained calf; bring me back that I may be restored, for you are the Lord my God.
19 For after I had turned away, I relented, and after I was instructed, I struck my thigh; I was ashamed, and I was confounded, because I bore the disgrace of my youth.’
20 Is Ephraim my dear son? Is he my darling child? For as often as I speak against him, I do remember him still. Therefore my heart yearns for him; I will surely have mercy on him, declares the Lord.
21 “Set up road markers for yourself; make yourself guideposts; consider well the highway, the road by which you went. Return, O virgin Israel, return to these your cities.
22 How long will you waver, O faithless daughter? For the Lord has created a new thing on the earth: a woman encircles a man.”
23 Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: “Once more they shall use these words in the land of Judah and in its cities, when I restore their fortunes: “ ‘The Lord bless you, O habitation of righteousness, O holy hill!’
24 And Judah and all its cities shall dwell there together, and the farmers and those who wander with their flocks.
25 For I will satisfy the weary soul, and every languishing soul I will replenish.”
26 At this I awoke and looked, and my sleep was pleasant to me.
27 “Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will sow the house of Israel and the house of Judah with the seed of man and the seed of beast.
28 And it shall come to pass that as I have watched over them to pluck up and break down, to overthrow, destroy, and bring harm, so I will watch over them to build and to plant, declares the Lord.
29 In those days they shall no longer say: “ ‘The fathers have eaten sour grapes, and the children’s teeth are set on edge.’
30 But everyone shall die for his own iniquity. Each man who eats sour grapes, his teeth shall be set on edge.
31 “Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah,
32 not like the covenant that I made with their fathers on the day when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt, my covenant that they broke, though I was their husband, declares the Lord.
33 For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, declares the Lord: I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts. And I will be their God, and they shall be my people.
34 And no longer shall each one teach his neighbor and each his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’ for they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest, declares the Lord. For I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.”
35 Thus says the Lord, who gives the sun for light by day and the fixed order of the moon and the stars for light by night, who stirs up the sea so that its waves roar— the Lord of hosts is his name:
36 “If this fixed order departs from before me, declares the Lord, then shall the offspring of Israel cease from being a nation before me forever.”
37 Thus says the Lord: “If the heavens above can be measured, and the foundations of the earth below can be explored, then I will cast off all the offspring of Israel for all that they have done, declares the Lord.”
38 “Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when the city shall be rebuilt for the Lord from the Tower of Hananel to the Corner Gate.
39 And the measuring line shall go out farther, straight to the hill Gareb, and shall then turn to Goah.
40 The whole valley of the dead bodies and the ashes, and all the fields as far as the brook Kidron, to the corner of the Horse Gate toward the east, shall be sacred to the Lord. It shall not be plucked up or overthrown anymore forever.”

· Matthew is reminding us that, in Jesus, tragedy will yet be overcome with restoration.
· Rachel is the symbolic mother of Israel, often associated with sorrows, as she died in childbirth.
· Matthew’s use of Jeremiah 31 declares that in the horrific murder of the children of Bethlehem is the climax of the sorrows that Israel has endured in since the exile in 586 BC.

· Hope is returning after sorrow.
· Even in the darkest tragedies, we have the hope that God is working all things out for good for those whom He loves.

But when he heard that Archelaus was reigning over Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there, and being warned in a dream he withdrew to the district of Galilee. And he went and lived in a city called Nazareth, so that what was spoken by the prophets might be fulfilled, that he would be called a Nazarene.” (Matthew 2:19–23)

· Joseph remains obediently in Egypt until he is told that it is safe to return.
· When he does return, he wisely chooses not to dwell in Bethlehem.
· At the time, Judea was ruled by one of Herod’s sons Archelaus.
o Archelaus had the wonderful combination of cruelty and ineptitude.
o He would later be deposed by Rome.
· Joseph returns to his hometown in Nazareth of the region of Galilee.
o Galilee was ruled by another of Herod’s sons Antipas.
· Galilee was a mixed region of Jews, Greeks, and Romans.
· Matthew’s final fulfillment is the most difficult yet, because Nazareth is not found in the Old Testament at all.
· The clue is found in the fact that Matthew says that it was spoken by the “prophets” rather than the “prophet.”
o Matthew is drawing from multiple sources, pulling Messianic themes from across the Old Testament.

§ Nazareth was likely a town founded by remnants from the failed line of David after the exile.
§ Jesus, being from Nazareth, points a spotlight on his identity.
· The second theme has to do with who the Messiah would save.

· Galilee was a cosmopolitan place, yet it was proclaimed to be the origin place of the coming Messiah.
· The fact of its mixed nature caused it to be view by the Jews with some contempt.
· Nathaniel, one of the apostles, would famously say, “Can anything good come out of Nazareth.”
· Yet, Jesus’s coming out of Nazareth points to the salvation that He will bring to all the world.

Jesus and the Beginning of the End (Rev. 12)
· The story of Jesus’s flight to and return from Egypt has great significance in terms of what it says about who He is.
· Yet, in the Scripture we have an example of an even bigger story at play, perhaps the biggest story.
o The war in heaven between God and his angels, and the evil forces of Satan and his demons.
· We find this story not at the beginning but at the end, in the Revelation of John, chapter 12.

· A woman, glorious in appearance—Represents Israel and Mary.
· A great red dragon—Satan, the great enemy.
· A child who is to rule all the nations—Jesus Christ our Lord.
· A great war— It’s all so epic.
· Revelation 12 is not a chronological story, but a typological one. It is the story of God’s redemption writ large.
o Satan wages a war against God and man.
§ After the fall, God promised a conflict between the seed of the serpent and the seed of the woman. (Gen. 3:15)
15 I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.”
§ He promised the eventual victory of the seed of the woman.
o This war was seen as early as Cain and Abel, Jacob and Esau, Joseph and his brothers.
· Revelation 12 describes this conflict throughout history and its eventual end.
o Satan tries to devour Christ (Rev. 12:4)

· We need to understand the enemy.
o He is terrible: He led a rebellion in heaven, which caused 1/3 of the angels to fall with him.
o In this war, it was Michael, not God who fought with him and cast him out of heaven.
§ Satan wrongly imagines himself as God’s rival, but he is not in the same league.
· Satan was cast out of heaven, but he still sought to destroy God’s work.
o Herod’s plan to kill Jesus was ultimately the work of Satan.
· Yet God was at work in preserving Jesus’s life until the day when he would willingly give it up.
o When he would win the victory over Satan, sin, and death.

· Christmas is the time of year we are reminded that the birth of Jesus Christ is the beginning of the end for evil.

· In his birth, Jesus invaded Satan’s domain.
· Satan marshals all his devices to try and stop Him, as he did with Herod.
o But his defeat is sure.
· We have become a part of his victory.
· Satan is defeated, yet he still seeks to destroy the woman and the rest of her offspring, the church.
o He makes war against the church with a never ending flood of accusations. (v. 10).
o Our hope is in Jesus Christ, and through Him we can overcome every obstacle.

o We overcome by admitting our need for Christ.
§ By relying on His merit and not our own.
· As Jesus left heaven to come in search of us, we are called to leave behind our old lives, being born again.

For still our ancient foe doth seek to work us woe;
His craft and pow’r are great, and, armed with cruel hate,
On earth is not his equal.

Dost ask who that may be? Christ Jesus, it is He;

And He must win the battle.

His kingdom is forever.
· Let us confess this morning that the kingdom has come because the King has been born in Bethlehem.
o We can come to him, confessing our sins and receiving forgiveness.
o Turning from our sin let us strive to walk in obedience to his commands.
