Recap from last week:
The Geography
And the different theories that exist...
2. Pharaoh’s Pursuit (“Why have we done this, that we have let Israel go from serving us?”)
3. Pharaoh’s Overtaking (Egypt marched upon Israel, Israel was afraid...) - The exact spot that Egypt overtook Israel was the exact spot that God told Israel to encamp...
1. Moses’ Rod
1. Moses’ Rod
16 But lift thou up thy rod, and stretch out thine hand over the sea, and divide it: and the children of Israel shall go on dry ground through the midst of the sea.
“Moses, lift up thy rod.”
Do you think God needed a rod to accomplish this?
I think Moses needed the rod for God to accomplish this through him...
When Moses lifted his rod in obedience to God before the parting of the sea… do you think that he was considering the other things God used that rod for in the past?
God turned that rod into a serpent (Ex. 4)
When Moses stretched the rod over the waters of Egypt, all water turned to blood (Ex. 7)
When Moses stretched the rod over the waters of Egypt, frogs came forth from the waters (Ex. 8)
Now Moses is asked to stretch forth the rod to part the waters of the sea in a dire time...
God was showing Moses that He worked before and will continue to work...
God’s way worked before and God’s way still works today...
But later in Numbers 20, God told Moses to “speak” to the rock for water to come forth and Moses “smote” the rock twice with his rod...
You can misuse the things of God if you’re not careful...
God gave that rod to Moses for a purpose and used it in his life many times to show God’s miraculous power and intervention...
The thing that got Moses in trouble was the fact that he used what God meant for God for something wrong in disobedience...
This would exclude Moses from the promised land...
2. God’s Barrier
2. God’s Barrier
19 And the angel of God, which went before the camp of Israel, removed and went behind them; and the pillar of the cloud went from before their face, and stood behind them: 20 And it came between the camp of the Egyptians and the camp of Israel; and it was a cloud and darkness to them, but it gave light by night to these: so that the one came not near the other all the night.
God doesn’t lead His people into failure...
Israel no longer needed a guide to show them where to go...
They have arrived at God’s intended destination, by the sea...
The only directing from God they needed was for them to “Go forward”...
Sometimes all God needs to say is “Go forward”...
We are looking for a miraculous pillar of fire or pillar of cloud...
But sometimes God just says “Go forward”...
Now they needed direction from the back of the camp...
God went from being a guide to a guard for His people...
3. God’s Funnel
3. God’s Funnel
21 And Moses stretched out his hand over the sea; and the Lord caused the sea to go back by a strong east wind all that night, and made the sea dry land, and the waters were divided. 22 And the children of Israel went into the midst of the sea upon the dry ground: and the waters were a wall unto them on their right hand, and on their left.
We see the presence of God behind them and on every side of them...
It was like a funnel of God’s will… across the sea on dry ground...
The most unimaginable directing from God...
Yet in a congregation like this, it started with leaders going forward and everyone else followed...
Don’t worry about what others are doing around you...
Just obey God’s will for your life and likely others will follow...
4. God’s Image
4. God’s Image
23 And the Egyptians pursued, and went in after them to the midst of the sea, even all Pharaoh’s horses, his chariots, and his horsemen. 24 And it came to pass, that in the morning watch the Lord looked unto the host of the Egyptians through the pillar of fire and of the cloud, and troubled the host of the Egyptians, 25 And took off their chariot wheels, that they drave them heavily: so that the Egyptians said, Let us flee from the face of Israel; for the Lord fighteth for them against the Egyptians.
There is something outstanding about the image of God that we just don’t understand...
a. Here God was looking at the Egyptians through the fire and cloud...
b. In Revelation 1:12-17, John saw Jesus and it says “And when I saw him, I fell at his feet as dead...”
c. God told Moses Exodus 33:20
20 And he said, Thou canst not see my face: for there shall no man see me, and live.
d. God’s image caused Isaiah to say “Woe is me!” Isaiah 6:1-8
1 In the year that king Uzziah died I saw also the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up, and his train filled the temple. 2 Above it stood the seraphims: each one had six wings; with twain he covered his face, and with twain he covered his feet, and with twain he did fly. 3 And one cried unto another, and said,
Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord of hosts:
The whole earth is full of his glory.
4 And the posts of the door moved at the voice of him that cried, and the house was filled with smoke. 5 Then said I, Woe is me! for I am undone; because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips: for mine eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts. 6 Then flew one of the seraphims unto me, having a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with the tongs from off the altar: 7 And he laid it upon my mouth, and said, Lo, this hath touched thy lips; and thine iniquity is taken away, and thy sin purged. 8 Also I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, Whom shall I send, and who will go for us? Then said I, Here am I; send me.
The image and presence of God always moves...
It should move us to fear of the Lord and obedience to His Word...
5. God’s Judgement
5. God’s Judgement
26 And the Lord said unto Moses, Stretch out thine hand over the sea, that the waters may come again upon the Egyptians, upon their chariots, and upon their horsemen. 27 And Moses stretched forth his hand over the sea, and the sea returned to his strength when the morning appeared; and the Egyptians fled against it; and the Lord overthrew the Egyptians in the midst of the sea. 28 And the waters returned, and covered the chariots, and the horsemen, and all the host of Pharaoh that came into the sea after them; there remained not so much as one of them. 29 But the children of Israel walked upon dry land in the midst of the sea; and the waters were a wall unto them on their right hand, and on their left. 30 Thus the Lord saved Israel that day out of the hand of the Egyptians; and Israel saw the Egyptians dead upon the sea shore. 31 And Israel saw that great work which the Lord did upon the Egyptians: and the people feared the Lord, and believed the Lord, and his servant Moses.
The wicked will turn when it’s too late...
Judgement has come...
