Your gift is God’s solution to a problem He designed you to carry.
Vocation does not come from a voice “out there” calling me to become something I am not. It comes from a voice “in here” calling me to be the person I was born to be, to fulfill the original selfhood given me at birth by God
Then the Lord said to Samuel, “Behold, I am about to do a thing in Israel at which the two ears of everyone who hears it will tingle.
I believe everyone has a “thing”
God Intentionally Forms People For a Thing
Ps 139:16
Your eyes saw my unformed substance;
in your book were written, every one of them,
the days that were formed for me,
when as yet there was none of them.
Anthropomorphism comes from Greek:
anthrōpos = human
morphē = form
It means attributing human physical characteristics or actions to God in order to help humans understand Him.
Unformed Substance:
Something wrapped up, incomplete, or not yet fully developed
It refers to potential not yet realized, but already known by God.
David is saying:
Even when I was unformed, unfinished, and unseen by humans, God fully saw me.
Formed:
This word is used when:
A potter deliberately shapes a vessel
God carefully fashions something for purpose
Design and function are built into the forming process
“Formed” means:
God actively designed your life
Your days have structure and purpose
Nothing about your existence is random
“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you,
and before you were born I consecrated you;
I appointed you a prophet to the nations.”
Purpose is not accidental.
Divine Guidance
Now Samuel did not yet know the Lord, and the word of the Lord had not yet been revealed to him.
Samuel waited for a voice.
We walk with the Guide.
Samuel served before revelation.
We serve with revelation.
Samuel heard God at appointed times.
We are indwelt by God at all times.
Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might understand the things freely given us by God.
The Spirit Brings Clarity
The Spirit brings clarity to our assignment — what we are to do
The Spirit brings conviction to our call — why we are to do it
The Spirit brings direction to our steps — how we are to do it
The Spirit brings confirmation to our timing — when we are to do it
The Spirit brings courage to our obedience — the strength to do it
Pause!!!!
I know I have a “thing” to do, but….. What do you do when you’re going through “things?”
Have you ever felt like your assignment was clear, but the circumstances were confusing?
Have you ever wondered if what you’re facing is a delay from God or an attack against your calling?
Have you ever questioned whether the detour meant you missed God—or if God was still working?
Today I want to talk to those who are frustrated with “things,” but you know you are focused on your “thing.”
When You Go Through “Things,” Your Role Is Faithfulness
You cannot control:
Timing
Resistance
Other people
But you can control:
Obedience
Trust
Endurance
This is where the Spirit brings clarity—not always by removing the obstacle, but by showing how to walk through it.
Paul Said…
And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.
Paul does not say:
All things are good
All things are easy
All things feel purposeful in the moment
But their is a purpose behind your things!
The purpose of the “thing” is to meet the needs of others…
“Work Together”
Literal meaning: to work together, to cooperate, to actively produce together
This is where we get the English word “synergy.”
This is why your attack is heavy and we need each other!
What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?
Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword?
No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.
