In Luke Chapter 2, we find the timeless and beloved account of the birth of Jesus of Nazareth. It is somewhat helpful to understand that if even one of these things occurred surrounding a common birth, it would be significant.
If any common person was born of a virgin, that would be a scientific anomaly. If any common person’s birth was announced in the night sky, that would be a supernatural strangeness. If a star appeared in the heavens as a beacon to follow, it would be an astronomical oddity. And if a mother giving birth in a barn isn’t strange enough, having strangers come to pay homage to the newborn baby certainly is out of the ordinary.
But what does this mean to you? Is all of this just a grand story to you? Perhaps you read and hear about these events once a year and think it is a beautiful and wonderful saga of hope amidst persecution and against all odds. Everyone loves the possibility of a commoner rising from the gutter to become a king.
It avails you little that Christ is born, or that Christ died, unless unto you a Child is born, and for you Jesus bled. A personal interest in the birth, life, and death of Christ is the main point for each one of us.
Charles Spurgeon
So that is the main point, isn’t it? Taking a personal interest in these things means that it is more than a beautiful story; it is HIS story, but it is OUR story. For our story begins in Eden, but it would end in Eden if not for HIS story. When we become children of God, we share in HIS story!
What does Christmas mean? Is it not the time of year when men are reminded of Christ the Savior’s birth? Are you not told to remember how Jesus came into the world to save sinners? All this is true. There is no denying it. The birth of Christ the Savior—the manhood of Christ the Savior—the salvation provided by Christ the Savior—all these are mighty facts. But after all will they profit you anything? Will they do you any good? In one word—shall you be saved?
J. C. Ryle
So there it is. There is the question. “Shall you be saved?”
As it says in Acts 16:31Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved”
