Freed from The Power of Death
Freed from The Power of Death
V 14
we share a common ansensor Adam and a common dilemma a sin nature from Adam
because of this we are afraid of death
we are prisoners to death without escape
when we were born we had nothing to do with it our parents got together and made us
but Jesus
For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us; And the government will rest on His shoulders; And His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace.
a son was given, the son is from eternity
Jesus partook, did not share out sin nature
He became human without the curse and stench of death
V 9 He tasted death for everyone
V 13 Hebrews is talking about the children God the Father gave the Son
V 14 Therefore the children who God gave to Jesus are human and in need to be changed
to be forgiven
in need to have a redeemer
Jesus had to become one of us like us
but without the sin nature
and by His death on the cross Jesus made satan powerless over death
the only way a christian should have a fear of death is if we allow satan to lie to us
he is like a vicious dog on a chain tethered to a steel eye hook in a cement wall
he can only hurt us if we get to close
but his strength to hold us in the fear and power of death has been broken for His children
Who rescued us from the authority of darkness, and transferred us to the kingdom of the Son of His love,
in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.
but in order for Jesus to do that he had to become one of us
to be our kinsman redeemer
to buy us from the

death used to be black and evil. dreaded and feared.
man was not created to die. Adam was supposed to live forever
but now we are a slave to death there is no getting around it
people have frozen themselves to be thawed and brought back to life when a cure was found for their disease
now they are putting a chip in peoples brains that can be put into another body when theirs wears out
or into a robot trying for immortality
but Jesus freed us from this slavery
in the story of the rich man and Lazarus
“Now it happened that the poor man died and was carried away by the angels to Abraham’s bosom, and the rich man also died and was buried.
where is the fear? where is the sting of death
a familiar verse read at funerals is
“O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?”
Lazarus the poor man died and was escorted by angels to paradise
the sting of the slavery of death was swallowed up in victory
we have been liberated from the power and slavery of death
And we have been

V 16
These 2 chapters have been about the superiority of Jesus to the angels
now we see that the seed of Abraham have what the angels will never have
redemption
in this context we see that the CHURCH IS CONSIDERED THE SEED OF ABRAHAM
remember Romans tells us that we have been grafted in to the olive tree
And if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s seed, heirs according to promise.
V 17
Jesus had to become like us
It was imperative because He was to be our High Priest
who, although existing in the form of God, did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied Himself, by taking the form of a slave, by being made in the likeness of men.
Being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.
He could not be a high priest unless He experienced life to the fullest
to be a substitute for sin for His children He had to be like us
one for one
the blood of lambs and bulls could not take away sin
it only covered the sin until the time of Christ’s death on the cross
Jesus came to fulfil the law. not one of the laws were broken by Jesus in His whole life
out of all the times He was harassed of all the time He was threatened
of all the times He was lied about and tempted by satan.
going through childhood
through the teen years
through all he did not sin once
through His 33 year life Jesus remained the perfect substitutionary sacrifice
V 17
make Propitiation
to satisfy the wrath of God against the sinner
to show mercy to someone
does Jesus satisfy the wrath of God against someone who is not saved?
if that is the case then no one would be punished for their sin
when the high priest went into the holy of holies. did the blood atone for all people?
what about the Phillistines?
V 13 children God has given Me
V 14 the children
V 16 seed of Abraham
3-1 Holy brothers
propitiation is applied to those who are saved
We the bride of Christ has been freed from the power of death
the slavery of death
and we are free from the death penalty
Jesus did all this for His bride
Jesus did all this to bring glory to the Father
Jesus did this to exhibit the grace and mercy of God
for those who do not believe the exhibits the perfect justice and punishment of God
V 18 because of the life that Jesus lived he is able sympathise with us in our troubles
he is able to help us the way we need the help
