As we end 2025 I wanted to preach something we missed this last year but I wanted it to be at the right time
During this time of the year we often reflect over the previous year
Did we accomplish our goals
Did we make goals
Were we successful or not
Did we lose weight or gain weight
Did we read our Bibles more or less
Those sort of things right
And maybe you are someone who doesn’t worry about any of that sort of stuff and that is fine
However I think most of us look back and when we do maybe we see things we could have done better or differently as we like to call them so we don’t feel to bad about ourselves
One man in particular did that
Peter
Oh Peter
Let me give you some background on Peter
Matthew 4:18–19 NASB95
18 Now as Jesus was walking by the Sea of Galilee, He saw two brothers, Simon who was called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen. 19 And He said to them, “Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.”
As you read through the New Testament you find the man Peter is talked about
This is the guy who we are talking about
Peter was called by God to follow after Him
And Peter left everything and followed right away
Peter was a fisherman by trade
Jesus calls Him and Peter becomes a fisher of man
Someone who would catch men for the Glory of the Lord
But this morning this is the guy we are talking about
Some more background information on this guy
Matthew 14:28–31 NASB95
28 Peter said to Him, “Lord, if it is You, command me to come to You on the water.” 29 And He said, “Come!” And Peter got out of the boat, and walked on the water and came toward Jesus. 30 But seeing the wind, he became frightened, and beginning to sink, he cried out, “Lord, save me!” 31 Immediately Jesus stretched out His hand and took hold of him, and said to him, “You of little faith, why did you doubt?”
Peter was the guy
The one and only person who when He sees Jesus walks on water
He calls to the Lord and says if t is you then call me out of the boat
The faith it took to make that statement right
Lord if you can do this then please use me there had to have been some sort of belief that God would call him out of the boat and that he could walk on water also
And church Peter gets out fo the boat and walks on water
What an amazing experience
And at the sight of waves, he took his gaze on Christ and starts to sink
We focus on the fact that he starts to sink when he takes his gaze on Christ and that is true we sink when we aren’t focues on Christ
However of the 12 Peter is only one to walk on water and get out of the boat
This is the guy we are talking about this morning
Matthew 17:1–5 NASB95
1 Six days later Jesus took with Him Peter and James and John his brother, and led them up on a high mountain by themselves. 2 And He was transfigured before them; and His face shone like the sun, and His garments became as white as light. 3 And behold, Moses and Elijah appeared to them, talking with Him. 4 Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good for us to be here; if You wish, I will make three tabernacles here, one for You, and one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” 5 While he was still speaking, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and behold, a voice out of the cloud said, “This is My beloved Son, with whom I am well-pleased; listen to Him!”
One of the instances where we see Peter as part of the inner circle
Peter is with Jesus when he is revealed that He is the son of God by God Himself
In the midst of that Peter asks should we build tabernacles to you
This sort of introduces that Peter is part of the inner circle not that there was but Jesus took with Him Peter, James and John
Sort of pulling back the curtains in Heaven to reveal Jesus’s true self being transfigured
Which is to be transformed to something more beautiful or elevated
More background
Matthew 26:36–40 NASB95
36 Then Jesus came with them to a place called Gethsemane, and said to His disciples, “Sit here while I go over there and pray.” 37 And He took with Him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and began to be grieved and distressed. 38 Then He said to them, “My soul is deeply grieved, to the point of death; remain here and keep watch with Me.” 39 And He went a little beyond them, and fell on His face and prayed, saying, “My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me; yet not as I will, but as You will.” 40 And He came to the disciples and found them sleeping, and said to Peter, “So, you men could not keep watch with Me for one hour?
Peter as again part of the inner circle if you will
To go deeper into the garden with Jesus to pray with Him
A front row seat to the Savior of the Universe spending time seeking the Father
Church this is the background of the guy who would go on to deny He even knew Jesus
Luke 22:55–62 NASB95
55 After they had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard and had sat down together, Peter was sitting among them. 56 And a servant-girl, seeing him as he sat in the firelight and looking intently at him, said, “This man was with Him too.” 57 But he denied it, saying, “Woman, I do not know Him.” 58 A little later, another saw him and said, “You are one of them too!” But Peter said, “Man, I am not!” 59 After about an hour had passed, another man began to insist, saying, “Certainly this man also was with Him, for he is a Galilean too.” 60 But Peter said, “Man, I do not know what you are talking about.” Immediately, while he was still speaking, a rooster crowed. 61 The Lord turned and looked at Peter. And Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how He had told him, “Before a rooster crows today, you will deny Me three times.” 62 And he went out and wept bitterly.
Notice church it starts at a fire
That Peter is watch as Jesus has just been arrested, and just a short time before He had told Jesus that He would follow Him unto death
He is the guy who chopped off the ear of the guard of the high priest
And now we Peter claiming he doesn’t know Jesus
Sort of watching things unfold on the outskirts
Doesn’t want to get to close afraid of what might happen
Once again someone askes or claims that Peter is one of Jesus’s followers and once again Peter denies Jesus
Finally someone says this one is one of them too for he is a Galilean too
The same at Jesus
Peter once again denies knowing Christ
And that is sort of where we left things
Peter who was one of Jesus’s closest friends who had said I will die with you has just denied even knowing the man Jesus
So maybe when you look over your previous year give yourself some grace because at least you didn’t deny Jesus
Unless you did then listen up
If this is all the background of Peter
This is the guy we are talking about
Peter was again one of the closest friends of Jesus
And peter is probably remembered for denying Jesus
So church here is the thing this morning
As we close out the year
Jesus doesn’t leave Peter
Just like He doesn’t leave you and I
See you and I have messed up something awful
Maybe we have been a peter at times in our life
Maybe there were times when we should have said something and were quite because we were afraid
Maybe if we are honest we have been so close to God and yet in the midst being so close we drifted
Seriously people we are not good
And yet we live in a world that likes to say that
I think we like to say well they are a good kid or they are a good person
We like to say well deep down they are a good person
When I hear that I sort of squirm
There is nothing good about us when we get right down to it
Please understand we have said it here a number of times
It is cruical to the accepting of the Gospel
The understanding of how horrible you really are
You have sinned
Some of you continue to live in sin and either deny it all together or try and justify it
And church you are contining to live in sin
The Gospel message is that Jesus loves you so much that He refuses to allow you to stay the same because He knows staying the same, staying in sin will be an eternity away from God the Father and Jesus doesn’t want that
And please hear me this morning because some of you need to hear this in your heart this morning that Jesus doesn’t leave you
Do you know Jesus doesn’t leave you
John 21:1–5 NASB95
1 After these things Jesus manifested Himself again to the disciples at the Sea of Tiberias, and He manifested Himself in this way. 2 Simon Peter, and Thomas called Didymus, and Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, and the sons of Zebedee, and two others of His disciples were together. 3 Simon Peter said to them, “I am going fishing.” They said to him, “We will also come with you.” They went out and got into the boat; and that night they caught nothing. 4 But when the day was now breaking, Jesus stood on the beach; yet the disciples did not know that it was Jesus. 5 So Jesus said to them, “Children, you do not have any fish, do you?” They answered Him, “No.”
Jesus shows up at the shore as some of the disciples had gone fishing
Sort of like Jesus is pursing one of them for a purpose
These were professional fisherman remember
They caught nothing
Continuing on
John 21:7–11 NASB95
7 Therefore that disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, “It is the Lord.” So when Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put his outer garment on (for he was stripped for work), and threw himself into the sea. 8 But the other disciples came in the little boat, for they were not far from the land, but about one hundred yards away, dragging the net full of fish. 9 So when they got out on the land, they saw a charcoal fire already laid and fish placed on it, and bread. 10 Jesus said to them, “Bring some of the fish which you have now caught.” 11 Simon Peter went up and drew the net to land, full of large fish, a hundred and fifty-three; and although there were so many, the net was not torn.
At the announcing that it is the Lord
One of Peter’s best and closest friends
He throughs his clothes on and jumps right into the water
Peter so wanted to get to Jesus
They caught so many fish
After a night of catching nothing now they are bringing in 153 fish
I can’t imagine catching 153 fish
Peter is on the shore and helps bring them on teh shore
It should be noted that there is a fire going
Something amazing is about to happen at that fire
Remember the last fire that Peter was around
He spent the evening denying Jesus
And now we see Jesus sitting around the fire with Peter
John 21:15–17 NASB95
15 So when they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of John, do you love Me more than these?” He said to Him, “Yes, Lord; You know that I love You.” He said to him, “Tend My lambs.” 16 He said to him again a second time, “Simon, son of John, do you love Me?” He said to Him, “Yes, Lord; You know that I love You.” He said to him, “Shepherd My sheep.” 17 He said to him the third time, “Simon, son of John, do you love Me?” Peter was grieved because He said to him the third time, “Do you love Me?” And he said to Him, “Lord, You know all things; You know that I love You.” Jesus said to him, “Tend My sheep.
Church Jesus asks Peter 3 times do you love around the fire
The last time Peter was around a fire he denied Jesus 3 times
Jesus is asking Peter one for one to negate the denying each time
I told you earlier that Jesus didn’t leave Peter
In the midst of the horribleness of what Peter did
Jesus purses Peter to restore Him
To make him right again
Church please hear me
Jesus is pursuing you
You are here this morning to hear this message that Jesus doesn’t leave you
you can be restore Jesus is saying
That is the Gospel message
You have done some bad things
You don’t have to sit in the bad things and remain in the bad things
Jesus said I love you so much
John 3:16 NASB95
16 “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.
God said I love you so much I will pay for what you you have done to make you right
And God says I love you so much I refuse to allow you to sit in the sin
I refuse to allow you to stay in the guilt and shame and death that comes with sin
Remember church sin always leads to death
Jesus loves you so much that just like he didn’t allow Peter to remain in the sin and shame that was his sin and how Jesus restored Him
He can and will do that for you this morning
Mark 1:15 NASB95
15 and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel.”
If you will repent from your sin and trust Jesus you can be saved this morning
Peter repented of His sin of denying Jesus and was restored
Church this morning you can be restored as well
As we come to our time of invitation
It is just that
An invitation to repent and trust the Lord
Maybe you have never repented of your sin and trusted in Jesus
You are not saved
This morning Jesus may very well be calling you to turn from the junk in your life and trust Him this morning
Would you do that
Maybe you have already have a personal relationship with Jesus but like Peter you have sinned and messed up
Instead of remaining in the sin, shame and guilt
This morning Jesus may very well be calling you to repent and be restored just like Peter was
Do you love me Jesus is asking
Would you turn from the world and trust Me Jesus is asking
or maybe you need to join this local body of believers
This is you time to respond to God
You can speak with someone down front or spend time in prayer at the alter
The alter is open
