Condemned

Before Pilate
Doesn’t want a riot on his hands
“Crucify Him!”
but proclaims that Jesus is innocent
According to the Jews and the Sanhedrin:
Jesus is charged with Blasphemy - considering Himself equal with God
He has claimed to the Messiah, and the Son of God
Also, the Son of Man - identifies Himself as the One who has been given the authority to judge all the Nations Daniel 7
Matthew 26:66 “what do you think?” They answered, “He deserves death!””
Conclusion: Jesus is worthy of death
Answer: “Crucify Him!”
But they are not able to put Him to death
John 18:29–31 “Therefore Pilate went out to them and said, “What accusation do you bring against this Man?” They answered and said to him, “If this Man were not an evildoer, we would not have delivered Him to you.” So Pilate said to them, “Take Him yourselves, and judge Him according to your law.” The Jews said to him, “We are not permitted to put anyone to death,””
Charge before Rome:
Luke 23:2 “And they began to accuse Him, saying, “We found this man misleading our nation and forbidding to pay taxes to Caesar, and saying that He Himself is Christ, a King.””
Problem: Caesar is the King
What shall I do with this Man? “Crucify Him!”
Question: Just how far did God come down? (spoiler alert: He came to get us)
How far away are we from God?
To the Jews: I AM He
Daniel 7:14 ““And to Him was given dominion, Glory and a kingdom, That all the peoples, nations and men of every language Might serve Him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion Which will not pass away; And His kingdom is one Which will not be destroyed.”
To the Romans:
John 18:36 “Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not of this world. If My kingdom were of this world, then My servants would be fighting so that I would not be handed over to the Jews; but as it is, My kingdom is not of this realm.””
Is this Man your King?
-”We have no King but Caesar!”
Calls get louder - “Crucify Him!”

What is the significance?

Is there any man worthy to tell the story of the Passion of Jesus Christ?
As a preacher - I am humbled
The most horrifying event in human history
Systematic Degradation of the only innocent Man who ever lived
Unravelling of what sin had done to an entire culture of people
Consider where we’ve been!
For what?! now we are a murderous clan demanding the blood of God’s Son
Forsaking of what He offered to World - namely Peace
Angel appeared to Joseph
Matthew 1:20–23 the Child who has been conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. “She will bear a Son; and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.” Now all this took place to fulfill what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet: “Behold, the virgin shall be with child and shall bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel,” which translated means, “God with us.””
Just how far has God come to be with us?
What if God was with us? would we then have peace?
Also, the Most Glorious Event in Human History
This is when God wins the war for His creation
Through this event, God destroys the enemy, Satan
God says to the Serpent
Genesis 3:15 “And I will put enmity Between you and the woman, And between your seed and her seed; He shall bruise you on the head, And you shall bruise him on the heel.””
Through this event, God blesses the Nations
Genesis 12:3 “And I will bless those who bless you, And the one who curses you I will curse. And in you all the families of the earth will be blessed.””
Through this event, God makes men righteous
Through this event God establishes His Kingdom
Through this event all of God’s Grace, Mercy, compassion, faithfulness, and Truth are displayed and offered to whosoever will
But, Just how far has He come?

Mockery of Jesus Christ

So, Pilate releases the Robber, Barabbas to the crowd and Jesus to the Roman Soldiers
Jesus is Scourged before being handed over for Crucifixion
Scourging is a violent beating by way of a leather whip called a flagrum
Whip: had pieces of metal and glass attached to the ends in order that it may tear the skin and expose the insides of the condemned
Purpose: was to weaken and humiliate the subject and many didn’t make it out of this torture alive
Then, Jesus was brought into the Praetorium (Governor’s Living Quarters whilst in Jerusalem)
Surrounded by a Roman Cohort of Soldiers (600)
Stripped Him of all His clothes
Put a Purple robe on Him, pressed a crown of thrones upon His head, and gave Him a reed
and they kneeled down before Him in mockery
“Hail, King of the Jews”
Spat on Him and snatched the reed from Him and began to beat Him with it

How far did God Come to get us?

He has come this far
To make Himself a mockery on our behalf
To be beaten, abused, betrayed and arrested
Suffered physical pain, but also emotional anguish
And He stood in our place - positionally in a salvific only
Stood before us and defended us against Caesar, against sin and profanity, against self, and against Satan
He taught us how to Love one another and God
He cleansed the Temple
Healed the sick, the deaf, and sight to the blind - He cast out demons
He Prayed for us, He prophesied to us, He commanded us
He loved us, fulfilled us, and discipled us
He was transfigured, baptised, and born of the virgin Mary
How far did He come for us?
He came from the Throne to the Manger
Wise Men came from the East, the question was obvious to them (as it should be to us)
Matthew 2:2 ““Where is He who has been born King of the Jews? For we saw His star in the east and have come to worship Him.””
