Isaiah 9:6–7 LSB
6 For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us; And the government will rest on His shoulders; And His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace. 7 There will be no end to the increase of His government or of peace, On the throne of David and over his kingdom, To establish it and to uphold it with justice and righteousness From then on and forevermore. The zeal of Yahweh of hosts will accomplish this.

Introduction:

We have established that Christ is the Son of David with earthly rights to earthly throne of David. Christ is also the Son of God with Heavenly rights to the Heavenly throne. God also promised Him all of the nations of the world. He truly is the King of kings! He is the only King with the character to rule the world without becoming corrupt. There is an old saying, “Absolute power corrupts absolutely.” Christ is the exception because He is the “Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace.”
In the conclusion of this series, we read “There will be no end to the increase of His government or of peace...”

1. His Kingdom will increase without end.

Daniel 2:44 LSB
44 “And in the days of those kings the God of heaven will cause a kingdom to rise up which will never be destroyed, and that kingdom will not be left for another people; it will crush and put an end to all these kingdoms, but it will itself stand forever.
Luke 1:32–33 LSB
32 “He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David, 33 and He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and there will be no end of His kingdom.”

2. Peace is the result of justice and righteousness.

Isaiah 9:7 LSB
7 There will be no end to the increase of His government or of peace, On the throne of David and over his kingdom, To establish it and to uphold it with justice and righteousness From then on and forevermore. The zeal of Yahweh of hosts will accomplish this.
We must define the words “Justice” and “Righteousness.”
Justice: Webster 1828
“The virtue which consists in giving to every one what is his due; practical conformity to the laws and to principles of rectitude in the dealings of men with each other; honesty; integrity in commerce or mutual intercourse. justice is distributive or commutative. Distributive justice belongs to magistrates or rulers, and consists in distributing to every man that right or equity which the laws and the principles of equity require; or in deciding controversies according to the laws and to principles of equity. Commutative justice consists in fair dealing in trade and mutual intercourse between man and man.
2. Impartiality; equal distribution of right in expressing opinions; fair representation of facts respecting merit or demerit. In criticisms, narrations, history or discourse, it is a duty to do justice to every man, whether friend or foe.
3. Equity; agreeableness to right; as, he proved the justice of his claim. This should, in strictness, be justness.
4. Vindictive retribution; merited punishment. Sooner or later, justice overtakes the criminal.
5. Right; application of equity. His arm will do him justice
6. [Low Latin justiciarius.] A person commissioned to hold courts, or to try and decide controversies and administer justice to individuals; as the Chief justice of the king's bench, or of the common pleas, in England; the Chief justice of the supreme court in the United States, etc. and justices of the peace.”
Righteousness Webster 1828: RIGHTEOUSNESSnoun ri'chusness.
1. Purity of heart and rectitude of life; conformity of heart and life to the divine law. righteousness as used in Scripture and theology, in which it is chiefly used, is nearly equivalent to holiness, comprehending holy principles and affections of heart, and conformity of life to the divine law. It includes all we call justice, honesty and virtue, with holy affections; in short, it is true religion.
2. Applied to God, the perfection or holiness of his nature; exact rectitude; faithfulness.
3. The active and passive obedience of Christ, by which the law of God is fulfilled. Daniel 9:7.
4. Justice; equity between man and man. Luke 1:75.
5. The cause of our justification.
The Lord our righteousness Jeremiah 23:6.
The Book of Isaiah has much to say about Justice and Righteousness in the Kingdom of Christ!
Isaiah 16:5 LSB
5 And a throne will be established in lovingkindness, And a judge will sit on it in truth in the tent of David; Moreover, he will seek justice And be prompt in righteousness.
Isaiah 11:4–5 LSB
4 But with righteousness He will judge the poor, And decide with uprightness for the afflicted of the earth; And He will strike the earth with the rod of His mouth, And with the breath of His lips He will put the wicked to death. 5 Also righteousness will be the belt about His loins, And faithfulness the belt about His waist.
Isaiah 32:1 LSB
1 Behold, a king will reign righteously And princes will rule justly.
Isaiah 42:3 LSB
3 “A crushed reed He will not break And a faintly burning wick He will not extinguish; He will bring forth justice in truth.
Isaiah 63:1 LSB
1 Who is this who comes from Edom, With garments of glowing colors from Bozrah, This One who is majestic in His clothing, Marching in the greatness of His power? “It is I who speak in righteousness, mighty to save.”

3. God is zealous about Christ’s Kingdom!

Isaiah 42:13 LSB
13 Yahweh will go forth like a warrior; He will awaken His zeal like a man of war. He will make a loud shout, indeed, He will raise a war cry. He will prevail against His enemies.
Zephaniah 3:8 LSB
8 “Therefore wait for Me,” declares Yahweh, “For the day when I rise up as a witness. Indeed, My judgment is to assemble nations, To gather kingdoms, To pour out on them My indignation, All My burning anger; For all the earth will be devoured By the fire of My zeal.
We see Jesus Christ become very zealous in the Gospels.
John 2:13–17 LSB
13 And the Passover of the Jews was near, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. 14 And He found in the temple those who were selling oxen and sheep and doves, and the money changers seated at their tables. 15 And He made a scourge of cords, and drove them all out of the temple, with the sheep and the oxen; and He poured out the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables; 16 and to those who were selling the doves He said, “Take these things away; stop making My Father’s house a place of business.” 17 His disciples remembered that it was written, “Zeal for Your house will consume me.”

Conclusion: 1. Christ’s Kingdom cannot be separated from the ministry of Christ.

Jesus mentions the Kingdom over 100 times in the Gospels.
Matthew 4:17 LSB
17 From that time Jesus began to preach and say, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”
The message of Christ is even called the Gospel of the Kingdom.
Matthew 4:23 LSB
23 And Jesus was going throughout all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every kind of disease and every kind of sickness among the people.
Matthew 9:35 LSB
35 And Jesus was going through all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every kind of disease and every kind of sickness.
Matthew 24:14 LSB
14 “And this gospel of the kingdom shall be proclaimed in the whole world as a witness to all the nations, and then the end will come.

2. Christ’s Kingdom cannot be separated from Christ’s Church.

Matthew 10:7 LSB
7 “And as you go, preach, saying, ‘The kingdom of heaven is at hand.’
Matthew 16:13–19 LSB
13 Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi, He was asking His disciples, saying, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” 14 And they said, “Some say John the Baptist; and others, Elijah; but still others, Jeremiah, or one of the prophets.” 15 He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” 16 And Simon Peter answered and said, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” 17 And Jesus answered and said to him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah, because flesh and blood did not reveal this to you, but My Father who is in heaven. 18 “And I also say to you that you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build My church; and the gates of Hades will not overpower it. 19 “I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; and whatever you bind on earth shall have been bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall have been loosed in heaven.”
The Book of Acts ends with these words: (Speaking of Paul)
Acts 28:30–31 LSB
30 And he stayed two full years in his own rented quarters and was welcoming all who came to him, 31 preaching the kingdom of God and teaching concerning the Lord Jesus Christ with all confidence, unhindered.
Christ is ruling now over His Church.
Ephesians 1:22–23 LSB
22 And He put all things in subjection under His feet, and gave Him as head over all things to the church, 23 which is His body, the fullness of Him who fills all in all.

3. The Kingdom is growing slowly.

Most of the parables were to illustrate the Kingdom.
Matthew 13:31–32 LSB
31 He presented another parable to them, saying, “The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed, which a man took and sowed in his field; 32 and this is the smallest of all seeds, but when it is fully grown, it is the largest of the garden plants and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and nest in its branches.”
Contrary to common belief, the Kingdom of Heaven is not like a popcorn kernel, which is small and insignificant. Then, suddenly, it expands and grows instantly and completely! The Kingdom is like a mustard seed. It started off small. But it has been planted, taken root, and is growing!
Matthew 13:33 LSB
33 He spoke another parable to them, “The kingdom of heaven is like leaven, which a woman took and hid in three sata of flour until it was all leavened.”

4. Our role is to preach the Gospel until Christ returns!

The Church is made up of Ambassadors of the Kingdom!
2 Corinthians 5:20–21 LSB
20 So then, we are ambassadors for Christ, as God is pleading through us. We beg you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. 21 He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.
Matthew 24:14 LSB
14 “And this gospel of the kingdom shall be proclaimed in the whole world as a witness to all the nations, and then the end will come.
Matthew 28:18–20 LSB
18 And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. 19 “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to keep all that I commanded you; and behold, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”
