Luke 2:10-14

Old Testament Prophecies of the Coming of Christ (Messiah).
His birth and identity.
Genesis 3:15 - first Gospel promise.
Genesis 49:10 - the ruler from Judah to who the nations will obey.
Numbers 24:17 - a star and scepter rising out of Israel.
2 Samuel 7:12-16 - the Davidic covenant: an eternal throne and kingdom.
Isaiah 7:14 - born of a virgin, called Immanuel.
Isaiah 9:6-7 - a child born, a Son given; the government on his shoulders; everlasting kingdom.
Micah 5:2 - born in Bethlehem; His origins “from ancient day”.
His mission and ministry.
Isaiah 11:1-10 - The Spirit-anointed shoot from Jesse bringing righteousness and peace.
Isaiah 35:4-6 - God comes to save; the blind see, the lame walk.
Isaiah 40:1-5 - The Lord Himself comes; glory revealed to all flesh.
Isaiah 42:1-7 - The Servant brings justice, opens blind eyes, and is a covenant for the people.
Isaiah 53 - The suffering Servant who bears sin and brings justification.
Daniel 7:13-14 - The Son of Man receiving an everlasting kingdom from the Ancient of Days.
Old Testament Promises that the Messiah would save the Gentile nations.
Abrahamic Promise (The Foundation).
Genesis 12:3 - All families of the earth will be blessed.
Genesis 18:18 - All nations of the earth shall be blessed in him.
Genesis 22:18 - In your Seed all nations shall be blessed.
Genesis 26:4 - Reaffirmed to Isaac.
Genesis 28:14 - Reaffirmed to Jacob.
The Psalms (The Nations coming to the Messiah).
Psalm 2:8 - the nations given and the Messiah’s inheritance.
Psalm 22:27 - All the ends of the earth will turn to the Lord.
Psalm 61:1-4 - God’s salvation among all nations.
Psalm 72:8-11, 17 - The Messianic King ruling the nations; all nations call Him blessed.
Psalm 98:2-3 - God reveal His salvation in the sight of the nations.
The Prophets (Explicit Gentile Inclusion).
Isaiah 2:2-4 - All nations streaming to the mountain of the Lord.
Isaiah 9:1-2 - Light shining in Galilee of the Gentiles.
Isaiah 11:10 - The root of Jesse will be a banner for the peoples; nations seek Him.
Isaiah 42:6 - the Servant is a light to the nations.
Isaiah 49:6 - I will make you a light to the nations, that my salvation may reach the ends of the earth.
Isaiah 56:6-8 - Foreigners who join themselves to the Lord welcomed into His house.
Isaiah 60:1-3 - Nations come to the light of the Lord’s glory.
Jeremiah 16:19 - Nations come from the ends of the earth to the Lord.
Daniel 7:14 - All peoples, nations, and languages serve the Son of Man.
Zechariah 2:11 - Many nations shall join themselves to the Lord in that day.
Zechariah 8:20-23 - Ten men from the nations take hold of the robe of a jew, saying we will go with you.
The Mixed Multitude Pattern (Gentiles already being gathered).
Exodus 12:38 - a mixed multitude leaves Egypt with Israel.
Ruth 1-4 - A Moabite woman brought into the Messianic line.
1 Kings 10 - The Queen of Sheba seeking the wisdom of the king.
Jonah 3 - Nineveh repents and is spared.
What have we learned?
The Messianic promises were Israel’s hope for the future.
The Abrahamic promise is the hope of the nations.
The birth of Christ is the moment when Israel’s Messiah becomes the world’s Savior.
Luke 2:10-11 - all the people.
Luke 2:30-32 - Simeon interprets the birth.
John 1:29 - John the Baptist says he is the lamb that takes away the sins of the world.
John 3:16-17 - God loves the world and sends His son to save the world.
John 4:42 - The Samaritans confess that he is the Savior of the world.
Acts 13:47 - Paul applies Isaiah 49:6 to Jesus’ mission to bring salvation to the Gentiles.
Romans 1:16 - says that the Gospel is the power of God unto salvation to everyone who believes.
Romans 12:8-12 - Christ is the servant to the circumcision (Israel), and a light to the Gentiles, who will glorify God because of Him, and they will trust in Him.
Galatians 3:8, 26-29 - God justifies the heathen through faith, by faith are we children of God and in him is neither Jew or Gentile.
Ephesians 2:11-18 - Says that Christ has broken down the dividing wall between Jew and Gentile and that they are made one in Christ.
1 John 2:2 - Says that Christ is the propitiation (substitute sacrifice) for the sins of the entire world.
Christ is Israel’s Messiah.
The Savior of the world.
His coming fulfills promises to Israel and to the nations.
His mission extends to all people.

Application

Rejoice in the Faithfulness of God - He keeps every promise He makes.
Rest in the Grace of God - Christ came for you.
Share the Good News - The Gospel is for All People, so we must Go to all people!
