What is Communion?

Communion is one of the most important sacraments that we have as believers
It serves as a reminder of who Christ was, His mission, and what He accomplished for us
What I want to do this morning is very quickly talk about how communion started, the importance of it, and how it was done in the 1st century
To see the origin of communion, we have to go back to the Last Supper
The Last Supper/Lord’s Supper was a Passover meal that Jesus had with His disciples
It was called the Last Supper because it would be the last time Jesus shared a meal with His disciples Luk 22:14-20
Luke 22:14–20 NASB 2020
14 When the hour came, He reclined at the table, and the apostles with Him. 15 And He said to them, “I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer; 16 for I say to you, I shall not eat it again until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.” 17 And when He had taken a cup and given thanks, He said, “Take this and share it among yourselves; 18 for I say to you, I will not drink of the fruit of the vine from now on until the kingdom of God comes.” 19 And when He had taken some bread and given thanks, He broke it and gave it to them, saying, “This is My body, which is being given for you; do this in remembrance of Me.” 20 And in the same way He took the cup after they had eaten, saying, “This cup, which is poured out for you, is the new covenant in My blood.
This breaking of bread (representing His body) and the drinking of wine (representing His blood) would become reminders of the crucifixion that He would later endure on the cross
And every time we partake of communion, we should remember what His death on the cross meant
Jesus paying for our sins, and allowing those of us that accept His salvation & lordship, to be reconnected with God through the Holy Spirit
And allowing us to receive eternal life, avoiding hellfire on the last day

Who is Communion For?

This particular sacrament is very serious and should not be taken lightly or done flippantly
But we should be very reverent/respectful because we are honoring a man that gave His very life for us
Paul says, 1 Cor 4:7-8
1 Corinthians 11:27–32 NASB 2020
27 Therefore whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy way, shall be guilty of the body and the blood of the Lord. 28 But a person must examine himself, and in so doing he is to eat of the bread and drink of the cup. 29 For the one who eats and drinks, eats and drinks judgment to himself if he does not properly recognize the body. 30 For this reason many among you are weak and sick, and a number are asleep. 31 But if we judged ourselves rightly, we would not be judged. 32 But when we are judged, we are disciplined by the Lord so that we will not be condemned along with the world.
So, we should be examining ourselves, humbly and reverently
If you have any sin, confess it to the Lord before you partake
If you know your heart posture is not right before God, you may want to refrain from taking it
And most importantly, if you have not accepted Jesus as your Lord and Savior, I’m going to ask that you not participate until you do
I’m going to give everyone a few moments to pray and set your heart/mind in order before we partake the elements
SILENT PRAYER
COMMUNION
1 Corinthians 11:23–24 NASB 2020
23 For I received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread; 24 and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, “This is My body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of Me.”
1 Corinthians 11:25 NASB 2020
25 In the same way He also took the cup after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood; do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”

Breaking Bread Together

Now the reason why we are having a meal this morning is also biblical - Acts 2:44-47
Acts 2:44–47 NASB 2020
44 And all the believers were together and had all things in common; 45 and they would sell their property and possessions and share them with all, to the extent that anyone had need. 46 Day by day continuing with one mind in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, they were taking their meals together with gladness and sincerity of heart, 47 praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord was adding to their number day by day those who were being saved.
The communion meal was about more than connecting to God
It was also about connecting with one another
And bonding the believers together
Although we can’t do this every communion, this morning, I wanted us to have a meal where we can just break bread together, and share with one another
I also wanted to thank all of you for undergoing this journey with me and allowing me to serve as your pastor
I don’t take it lightly and I appreciate every one of you
With that said, I’m going to say grace and we can eat
