23 See, the virgin will become pregnant and give birth to a son, and they will name him Immanuel, which is translated “God is with us.”
How can Jesus be a Savior? Because He is Emmanuel, God with us. How did He get with us? He was virgin born. I say again, He was called Jesus. He was never called Emmanuel. But you cannot call Him Jesus unless He is Emmanuel, God with us. He must be Emmanuel to be the Savior of the world. That is how important the virgin birth is.
J. Vernon McGee
The law made known sin, and the wrath and curse of God; it showed us a God above us, and a God against us; but the gospel makes known grace, and Emmanuel, God with us.
Matthew Henry (Nonconformist Biblical Exegete); Thomas Scott (Biblical Commentator)
23 See, the virgin will become pregnant
and give birth to a son,
and they will name him Immanuel
which is translated “God is with us.[1]
This title of Jesus refers to both His deity (God with us) and His identification and nearness to man (God with us).
Jesus is truly Immanuel, God with us. “Christ, indeed, was not called by this name Immanuel that we anywhere read of…but the import of this name is most truly affirmed and acknowledged to be fully made good in him.”
“In what sense then, is Christ GOD WITH US? Jesus is called Immanuel, or God with us, in his life; God with us, by the influences of his Holy Spirit, in the holy sacrament, in the preaching of his word, in private prayer. And God with us, through every action of our life, that we begin, continue, and end in his name. He is God with us, to comfort, enlighten, protect, and defend us, in every time of temptation and trial, in the hour of death, in the day of judgment; and God with us and in us, and we with and in him, to all eternity.”
There are some truths so familiar that we stop feeling their power. We recite them. We sing them. We place them on Christmas cards and banners. But every now and then, the Holy Spirit invites us to slow down to look again to let the truth strike us fresh.
Church, we stand before one of the most staggering declarations heaven has ever spoken over earth:
“They will name Him *Emmanuel,* which is translated: *God is with us*.
The infinite stepped into the intimate.
The Creator wrapped Himself in creation.
The Holy One walked into our unholy world—not to condemn it, but to redeem it.
He didn’t come as a seasonal sentiment.
He came as a *Person.*
A Presence.
A Promise that refuses to leave.
Church, Emmanuel means that God stepped into the moments we wish we could forget, the moments we’re walking through right now, and the moments we haven’t even lived yet. Emmanuel means your past is not abandoned, your present is not empty, and your future is not uncertain.
Emmanuel means the God who was with Moses in the fire, with Daniel in the lions’ den, with Mary in the unknown, with Paul in the prison—
And is with us in this very moment.**
You are not alone.
You have never been alone.
You will not be alone.
Because Emmanuel has come.
And He is here right now. . Emmanuel is not a normal name Jesus Christ was not a normal man when you say the name of Jesus the very atmosphere changes. Church, there are names… and then there is a name that shifts or changes the atmosphere of any person place or thing it enters into. Which sounds cool but what does that even mean? The atmosphere changes.
It's what happens when we start out singing a couple worship songs and we're half engaged and looking around but then all the sudden you begin to feel a change and you see everyone else feels it too and all the sudden people are crying and raising their hands and going to the alter all that is a result in Emmanuel, God with us! His name isn't just like every other name it's a name that can and does change the atmosphere and the thing is , is that He's always willing to change it, He's always willing to show up as a Great Revival that changes the atmosphere of a country. He's just waiting on us to realize that Emmanuel is in every moment!
You don’t have to wait for heaven to be in the presence of God because Im telling you right now we are present with God. God is with us in every moment making every day every service every gathering the possibility to see the fire of God! Emmanuel God is with us the same God that was at the revival at Asbury ,the same God that moved like a mighty rushing wind on the day of Pentecost, the same God that moved in two major great awakenings in the US and in England is with us right now and I don't know about you but I think we don't realize that one name Emmanuel is a game changer, is a life changer, is a chain breaker, is a Redeemer, God with us is something we hear at Christmas time but Emmanuel is in every moment of the life of a believer and I'm tired of not expecting to see the God who split the Red Sea. I've become OK with a few glory hallelujahs, some tears and a goosebump or two, but this morning I'm ready to see God with us. I'm ready to see hearts changed. I'm ready to see the effect of a holy God on a heart that hasn't repented. I'm ready to see the awe of God on everybody's face. Im not content with the move of God that’s already happened Im hurgry and craving a fresh move of God a fresh anointing . See God with us means that right now we have access to His Shekinah glory. See we like to dress the name Emmanuel up like a pretty little Christmas gift , something presentable for everyone to see and something we can admire and look at but we never open it , we never use the content of the gift which means we don’t understand the purpose of the gift which means we don’t know how valuable the gift is which means the gift isn’t able to operate in our lives it cant make a impact on anything because im holding this gift hostage rendering it unusable and ineffective but when we walk to the foot of that ole rugged cross and pick up that same gift and we tear into it and we embrace the contents of that same gift we not only begin to understand the purpose but we begin to see it operate and we see how valuable it is not just in my life but the gift of God with us enables us to put the gift to use impacting others lives. God with us.
The miracle of Christmas is not simply that Christ came —
it’s that He stayed.
He didn’t just visit humanity; He moved into our moments.
The gift of Emmanuel is that it isn’t just a piece of God its all of God. Its God concentrate. Your savior is God with us see when you call on Jesus your calling on every part of the trinity. The Father Son and the Holy Spirit. When you call on God that is always with us your also calling on El Shaddai Almighty God, when you don’t have what you need God with us as Yahweh Jireh – the Lord will provide is also there, when you need healing and you call on Emmanuel Yahweh Rophe is also there the Lord who heals.
CLOSE
If He was Emmanuel in your darkest moment, He will be Emmanuel in your present moment. When you are afraid — He is your peace.
When you are weary — He is your rest.
When you are uncertain — He is your guide.
When you are broken — He is your healer.
He is Emmanuel when the tears fall.
He is Emmanuel when the phone rings at midnight.
He is Emmanuel when the doctor shakes his head. He is Emmanuel when the job falls through. He is Emmanuel when the marriage feels fragile. He is Emmanuel when the anxiety rises.
He is Emmanuel when the joy overflows. He is Emmanuel at all moments —not because you hold onto Him, but because He holds onto you.
