Introduction:
“Time is the one thing we spend without ever knowing how much we have left.”
Tonight, we are standing at a threshold. One year is closing, and another is about to open.
The room is quieter than it was yesterday. The pace feels slower. And for a brief moment, we are given the rare gift of reflection.
New Year’s Eve has a way of making us honest. Not loud. Not defensive. Just honest.
And in that honesty, we are forced to ask ourselves what we have done with the time we were given—and what we intend to do with the time that is coming.
Main Text:
Ephesians 5:15–17 NKJV
15 See then that you walk circumspectly, not as fools but as wise, 16 redeeming the time, because the days are evil. 17 Therefore do not be unwise, but understand what the will of the Lord is.
With that in mind, Scripture speaks directly to how we are meant to live in the time we’ve been given.
Paul doesn’t tell us to panic about time—he tells us to pay attention to how we walk in it.

Walk Circumspectly into the New Year.

Word Study: “Circumspectly”

Enhanced Strong’s Lexicon — ἀκριβῶς (akribōs)

From the same as 196; GK 209; used five times in the New Testament. Translated as:
“diligently” (twice)
“perfect”
“perfectly”
“circumspectly”
Meaning: exactly, accurately, diligently.

Merriam-Webster: “Circumspect”

Adjective — careful to consider all circumstances and possible consequences; prudent; cautious.

Plain Meaning

It means be careful how and where you step.

You could also say: watch your walk.

How you walk in your spiritual life matters.

Hebrews 12:1 NKJV
1 Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us,
Careful walking isn’t just about direction—it’s also about what we’re willing to carry with us.

Application

We have to stop making excuses for our sin.

If we don’t stop making excuses, it will keep us from what God has for us.

If we’re honest, some of what slows us down isn’t accidental—it’s allowed.

Be Careful Who You Walk With

Proverbs 13:20 NKJV
20 He who walks with wise men will be wise, But the companion of fools will be destroyed.
1 Corinthians 15:33 NKJV
33 Do not be deceived: “Evil company corrupts good habits.”

The leadership in this church is not intimidated by your gifts.

There may well be many people in this very church who are more gifted than I am.

The fact that someone is more gifted than I am does not bother me at all.

I am here to help you develop good habits and wisdom, so that the train of your gifts, calling, and ministry does not come off the track.

And sometimes the greatest weight we carry isn’t a habit—it’s a relationship.
Wisdom helps us stay on track long enough for God’s purpose to take shape.

We redeem the time by walking and living in the purpose God has for us.

The life God has for you is not random. He has numbered your days.

Psalm 139:16 NKJV
16 Your eyes saw my substance, being yet unformed. And in Your book they all were written, The days fashioned for me, When as yet there were none of them.

His will is for every aspect of our lives, not just eternity.

Proverbs 19:21 NKJV
21 There are many plans in a man’s heart, Nevertheless the Lord’s counsel—that will stand.

God’s will touches:

Your job

Your mate

Your ministry

Your friendships

Your recreation

It may be a mystery to you right now, but the Lord knows it all.

So as this year closes, the question isn’t whether time matters—it’s how we’ll live in the time ahead.
Conclusion:
“Church, if you’re willing, say this with me.”
Then pause slightly between each line:

“My life has value in the hands of the Lord.” “I did not choose my purpose—He chose it for me.” “I redeem the time by walking in God’s purpose for my life.”

Finish with: “Amen.”
