Scripture:
Scripture:
24 “Therefore whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock:
25 and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it did not fall, for it was founded on the rock.
26 “But everyone who hears these sayings of Mine, and does not do them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand:
27 and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it fell. And great was its fall.”
28 And so it was, when Jesus had ended these sayings, that the people were astonished at His teaching,
29 for He taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes.
Big Idea: If we keep Christs way as our anchor
Introduction:
Every year me make resolutions without results. How can we truly follow a path that brings us lasting results and keeps us in the way of Christ?
Foundations Matter
I. Whoever Hears…. Whoever Does
I. Whoever Hears…. Whoever Does
Both of these areas are vital for the Growth of the believer. Our faith is activated in our hearing the word and our faith is applied based on our belief. Exposure to scripture rightly divided is one of the healthiest things we can do for ourselves
17 So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
Our foundations of faith grow in our lives by consistent exposure to the word of God.
Power Principle: Inspiration without application = quiet desperation. The reason some people are starving for change is because they have never been hungry for application.
23 For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man observing his natural face in a mirror;
24 for he observes himself, goes away, and immediately forgets what kind of man he was.
25 But he who looks into the perfect law of liberty and continues in it, and is not a forgetful hearer but a doer of the work, this one will be blessed in what he does.
(The Law of Liberty- Knowing you are not bound by works but still walking in holiness. You are no longer bound to sin)
II. Why is it so important to build on a solid foundation?
II. Why is it so important to build on a solid foundation?
Power Principle: Whatever we build on is what we have to live on
Power Principle: Whatever we build on is what we have to live on
When we build on faulty foundations we will eventually spend the majority of our time fixing cracks and rebuilding damaged parts of our lives.
Jesus is encouraging us to use his word as the blueprint for every aspect of our lives.
Therefore, we should evaluate and ask ourselves, what in our lives is not build on a biblical foundation? What part of my life have I not surrendered to God?
III. Why do we build on unstable foundations?
III. Why do we build on unstable foundations?
For spiritual and overall success, we must identify the root causes of unstable decisions and overcome them.
They allow us to build quickly to get what we want without regard for the future damage.
Sand is convenient and requires no prep work. A sandcastle does not need zoning of permits. Instant gratification turns to sadness when the tide comes in.
How many times have we let circumstances or even pressure from others make a decision before we consulted God?
6 Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God;
7 and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
Solution: Philippians 4:6-7
Slow down
Take a pause and a prayer
Someone else’s urgency, is not YOUR emergency
Set boundaries and direction in your life to avoid fast and fleshly decisions
Fast and Pray to crucify the flesh and create a heightened awareness to the word and the Holy Spirit for guidance
3. It’s the only foundation We’ve seen.
Solution:
Start from Scratch. Abandon the old way of life and cling totally to Christ.
Ephesians 4:17-24
2 Corinthians 5:17
17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.
17 This I say, therefore, and testify in the Lord, that you should no longer walk as the rest of the Gentiles walk, in the futility of their mind,
18 having their understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God, because of the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart;
19 who, being past feeling, have given themselves over to lewdness, to work all uncleanness with greediness.
20 But you have not so learned Christ,
21 if indeed you have heard Him and have been taught by Him, as the truth is in Jesus:
22 that you put off, concerning your former conduct, the old man which grows corrupt according to the deceitful lusts,
23 and be renewed in the spirit of your mind,
24 and that you put on the new man which was created according to God, in true righteousness and holiness.
