Main idea:
This sermon encourages perseverance in faith by reflecting on God's past promises, navigating present circumstances, and looking toward a hopeful future with divine guidance.
Key Scripture:
But now, this is what the Lord says — he who created you, Jacob, he who formed you, Israel: 'Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze. For I am the Lord your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior; I give Egypt for your ransom, Cush and Seba in your stead. Since you are precious and honored in my sight, and because I love you, I will give people in exchange for you, nations in exchange for your life. Do not be afraid, for I am with you; I will bring your children from the east and gather you from the west. I will say to the north, 'Give them up!' and to the south, 'Do not hold them back.' Bring my sons from afar and my daughters from the ends of the earth — everyone who is called by my name, whom I created for my glory, whom I formed and made.' —Isaiah 43:1-7
Quote: —Charles Spurgeon - By perseverance, the snail reached the ark.
Introduction
Introduction
Welcome, averyone, I’m asking God today to help us to grow in wisdom and understanding, to be nourished by the Word of God, and to be drawn closer to our Savior Jesus Christ.
I am excited to share this time with you all, as we stand on the threshold of a new revelation, a new understanding, and a renewed commitment to our faith.
We find ourselves today at the crossroads of reflection and anticipation, caught between the echoes of God's past promises, the trials and triumphs of our present circumstances, and the excitement of future possibilities.
We will be turning our hearts and minds to the profound verses of Isaiah 43, Jeremiah 29, and Philippians 3.
These passages, will remind us of our divine heritage, our earthly purpose, and our heavenly hope.
But before we do, let me share with you the wise words of the esteemed Charles Spurgeon, who once said,
"By perseverance, the snail reached the ark."
This simple yet profound statement reminds us that no matter how daunting the journey may seem, no matter how insurmountable the obstacles, perseverance in faith will always lead us to our divine destination.
Prayer:
Prayer:
Let us bow our heads in prayer.
Dear Heavenly Father, we thank You for this gathering of believers, united in our love for You and our desire to know You more.
We ask for Your wisdom as we reflect on Your promises, Your guidance as we navigate our present circumstances, and Your hope as we look towards the future.
Open our eyes to see Your truth, our ears to hear Your voice, and our hearts to feel Your love.
We pray all this in the mighty name of Jesus. Amen.
Transition. Now, let's turn our attention to the first main point of our discussion today: Pondering on Past Promises.
I. Pondering on Past Promises
I. Pondering on Past Promises
When we look back at the promises of God, we find a rich tapestry of divine faithfulness that stretches back to the dawn of creation.
The Lord, in His infinite wisdom and boundless love, has always been a promise-keeper, a covenant-maker, a God who is true to His word.
This is a truth that we see echoed time and time again in the scriptures, a truth that stands as a beacon of hope in our lives.
God declares to His people, "Do not fear, for I have you; I have summoned you by name; you are mine."
God has not only created and formed us but has also redeemed us and called us by name.
He has claimed us as His own, a promise that speaks of His deep, personal love for each one of us.
This promise of redemption is a living reality.
It's not just about what God has done in the past, but what He continues to do in our lives today.
Every day, He is working to redeem us, to transform us, to make us more like Him.
He is constantly calling us by name, inviting us into a deeper relationship with Him, reminding us that we belong to Him.
But this promise is about both us individually and also about our collective identity as the people of God.
When God says, "You are mine," He is speaking to all of us, as a community of believers.
He is reminding us that we are part of something bigger than ourselves, that we are part of His family, His body, His church.
This is a promise that binds us together, that unites us in a common purpose and a shared destiny.
God declares in
Jeremiah 29:11, "For I know the plans I have for you, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future."
Here, we see a God who not only knows us intimately but also has a plan for our lives.
This promise of a hopeful future includes both our life now and also our eternal destiny.
God's plan for us is not limited to our time on earth, but extends into eternity.
He has promised us a future that is filled with hope, a future that is anchored in His love, His grace, His mercy.
This is a promise that gives us a reason to live, a reason to hope, a reason to press on.
Paul writes in Philippians,
"Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus." Phili 3:13-14
Here, we see a believer who is not just living in the past or the present, but is also looking forward to the future.
He is not just remembering God's past promises or experiencing His present faithfulness, but is also anticipating His future blessings.
Transition.
In all these promises, we see a God who is faithful, who is loving, who is involved, who is forward-looking.
We see a God who has made promises in the past, who is fulfilling them in the present, and who will continue to keep them in the future.
We see a God who is not just interested in our individual lives, but also in our collective identity, our shared mission, our common journey.
We see a God who is not just a promise-maker, but a promise-keeper.
And that, dear friends, is a truth worth pondering, a truth worth cherishing, a truth worth living for.
II. Persevering through Present Problems
II. Persevering through Present Problems
As we continue our reflections, let's shift our gaze from the past and focus on the present.
We are living in a world that is often filled with challenges and difficulties.
But remember, we are not alone.
Our faith is not just about remembering God's past promises, but also about how we live out our faith in the present, especially when we face problems and difficulties.
Let's look at the story of Job.
Job was a man who faced unimaginable suffering.
He lost his wealth, his children, and his health.
Yet, in the midst of his pain, Job did not lose his faith in God.
He continued to trust in God's goodness and sovereignty, even when everything around him seemed to suggest otherwise.
Job's story reminds us that our faith is not just about enjoying God's blessings, but also about trusting in God's goodness in the midst of our problems and difficulties.
Our faith is not just about the destination, but also about the journey.
It reminds us that our faith is not just about the future, but also about the present.
Greek word study.
Now, let's turn our attention to the word "perseverance" in the original language of the Bible.
The Greek word for "perseverance" is "hepo-monē." (he-po-Monet)
This word is used in various places in the New Testament.
For instance, in Romans 5:3-4, Paul writes,
"Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope."
Here, "hypomonē" is translated as "perseverance," and it refers to the ability to endure hardships and difficulties with patience and faith.
James 1:2-4. In James 1:2-4, James writes,
"Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything."
Here, "hypomonē" is again translated as "perseverance," and it refers to the ability to remain steadfast in faith in the midst of trials and difficulties.
It is not just about enduring hardships and difficulties, but also about growing in faith and character in the midst of them.
It's about trusting in God's goodness and sovereign-ty, even when everything around us seems to suggest otherwise.
2 Corinthaisn 4:8-9. In the midst of our present problems, we are called to be like the Apostle Paul, who wrote in
2 Corinthians 4:8-9, "We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed."
Paul's words remind us that even in the midst of our problems and difficulties, we are not alone.
God is with us.
He is our strength and our refuge.
He is our hope and our salvation.
Finally, let's look at the story of the Israelites in the wilderness.
After they were delivered from slavery in Egypt, they faced many challenges and difficulties in the wilderness.
They faced hunger and thirst.
They faced the threat of enemies.
They faced the uncertainty of the future.
Yet, amid their problems and difficulties, they continued to trust in God.
They continued to follow God's guidance.
They continued to hope in God's promises.
Transition.
The story of the Israelites in the wilderness is a powerful reminder for us.
Our faith is not just about enjoying God's blessings, but also about trusting in God's guidance amid our problems and difficulties.
It reminds us that our faith is not just about the destination, but also about the journey.
III. Pressing Towards Future Possibilities
III. Pressing Towards Future Possibilities
As we turn our gaze toward the horizon of future possibilities, let us remember that the dawn of a New Year is more than just a change in the calendar.
It's a time of renewal, a time of hope, and a time of anticipation for what lies ahead.
The New Year presents us with a blank canvas, a fresh start, and an opportunity to write a new chapter in our lives.
Now, let's consider the first aspect of pressing towards future possibilities.
The New Year is a time to set new goals and to dream new dreams.
It's a time to stretch our faith and to believe God for greater things.
In the book of Philippians, the Apostle Paul talks about "straining toward what is ahead" and "pressing on toward the goal."
It's about stepping out in faith and taking hold of the promises and plans God has for us.
Research conducted by the University of Scranton suggests that people who explicitly make resolutions are ten times more likely to attain their goals than people who don't explicitly make resolutions.
This underscores the importance of having a clear vision and a defined goal as we press towards future possibilities.
Secondly, the New Year is also a time to cultivate a deeper relationship with God.
It's a time to seek His face and to know His heart.
As C.S. Lewis, the respected Christian writer, once said,
"The New Year is always a good time to start living the truths that we know."
Next, change is often uncomfortable and challenging, but it is also necessary for growth.
As we step into the New Year, let's be willing to let go of old habits, old mindsets, and old ways of doing things that are not in line with God's will for our lives.
Let's be open to the new things that God wants to do in us and through us.
Finally, pressing towards future possibilities requires a commitment to perseverance.
The road to our God-given destiny is often filled with obstacles and setbacks.
But we must not give up.
We must keep pressing on, keep believing, and keep trusting God.
Transition.
So, as we stand on the threshold of a New Year, let's press towards the future possibilities with faith, hope, and anticipation.
Let's set new goals, cultivate a deeper relationship with God, embrace change, and commit to perseverance.
And as we do, let's believe God for a year of breakthroughs, a year of victories, and a year of abundant blessings.
Conclusion
Conclusion
We serve a God who is not only the author of our past, but also the architect of our future.
He's the one who's called us by name, who's promised us a hope and a future, and who's beckoning us to press on towards the prize.
He's the God who's been with us in our past, who's with us in our present, and who'll be with us in our future.
We've been reminded today of the power of perseverance, the importance of pressing on, and the promise of God's unfailing love and faithfulness.
Let's take these truths to heart, let's live them out in our daily lives, and let's share them with a world that's in desperate need of hope and healing.
And now, may the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with us all, now and forevermore. Amen.
Let’s pray together.
Let’s pray together.
Salvation:
Salvation:
The Word of God says in: John 3:16
For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.
For “whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.”
If you’d would like to receive Jesus today, please pray this prayer with all of us:
Lord I believe that Jesus is the Son of God, and that He died On the cross for my sins and His resurrection from the dead gives me eternal life. I ask forgiveness of my sins, and I accept Jesus as my Lord and Savior. Amen.

Read first Corinthians 11:23- 26 - (Taking the elements together)
23 For I received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you: that the Lord Jesus on the same night in which He was betrayed took bread;
24 and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, “Take, eat; this is My body which is broken for you; do this in remembrance of Me.” (take bread)
25 In the same manner He also took the cup after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”
(Take Cup)
26 For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death till He comes.
Song: I know it was the Blood
Song: I know it was the Blood
I know it was the blood, I know it was the blood, I know it was the blood for me; One day when I was lost He died on the cross, I know it was the blood for me.
They nailed him to the tree, They nailed him to the tree, They nailed him to the tree for me; One day when I was lost He died on the cross, They nailed him to the tree for me.
They pierced him in the side, They pierced him in the side, They pierced him in the side for me; One day when I was lost He died on the cross, They pierced him in the side for me.
