Proverbs 4:20-27 & Ephesians 6:10-20

Background of the Texts

Proverbs 4:20-27
Solomon learned the importance of wisdom through David.
Third appeal for the son to pay close attention to Solomon’s words.
Life had been the promise in the previous verses, and he has encouraged that wisdom is the source of that life.
2. Ephesians 6:10-20
Church of Ephesus is likely not the sole recipient of this letter.
Immediately follows the “household code”
Final exhortation of this letter
Many see this exhortation as the culmination of the entire letter
Ties Eph. 4:1-6:9 with the supernatural realm discussed in the first half.
Sharp contrast from the qualities listed before (submission, love, gentleness) to sudden military type language.

Looking at the Text

Proverbs 4:20-27
“Watch over your heart with all diligence”
Heart in the OT means more than just your emotions, can refer to the whole personality and inner life of a person.
Possible connection to John 7:38 found in 4:23.
Inward position effects our outward behavior.
Specifically referring to speech here (falsehood and deceit and deviousness)
Ephesians 6:10-20
Belt of Truth
Connection to Isa 11:5 (XII rendering)
“Aletheia” is used in reference to God’s truth and human virtue in Eph.
Meant to combat against false teaching and heresy
Breastplate of Righteousness
Connection to Isa 59:17 talking about God’s own armor
Righteous living will protect the believer’s heart from the assaults of the devil (Romans 6:13)
Readiness and the Gospel of Peace
No explicit noun here, most see it has shoes or sandals.
Connection to Isa 52:7
Knowledge of the Gospel should make believers more alert (6:18)
Could also be more militaristic, stand your ground in preparation
Shield of Faith
Serves a specific purpose
Faith is not what is to be believed, but the confidence and trust the believer places in God Himself.
Common OT metaphor (Gen. 15:1)
Helmet of Salvation
Another OT connection in Isa. 59:17
The other defensive items have been with the command “to stand” and now the command is to “take up”.
The “present” is the focus, believers need to be present in their understanding of what salvation has done for them and that they are a new creation.
Could be a sign of victory (Barth)
Our salvation brings confidence in our ultimate safety.
Sword of the Spirit
The sword is “provided” by the Spirit
Meant to aid believers in their proclamation of the Gospel and to protect them from attacks of the evil one.
Could also just be referring to the message of the Gospel itself.

Theological Themes

Proverbs 4:20-27
Wisdom ought to be sought with diligence. Wisdom comes from the Lord so therefore the Lord must be sought with diligence.
Ephesians 6:10-20
Followers of Christ have the “equipment” that they need already provided to them.
There is a required action of the believer to actually “use” these metaphorical items.

Application Notes

Taking in both Proverbs 4 and Eph. 6, what does a guarded heart vs. an unguarded heart look like?
Prepared vs Unprepared?
Sure vs. Unsure?
How does one “pursue” wisdom?
How is wisdom dispersed to the generations after us?
How can we navigate “straight paths” and “sure steps” in a generation that is filled with the notion of subjective truth?
Are there any items of the Armor of God you have failed to put on?
