Jesus our Brother
This is number 2 in series entitled glory in his presence and now, I remember, I remember telling you that I didn't know how long this is going to last is going to last as long as it needs to. And I, I got information this week that is not going to go on for months, just going to go on Sunday and next week, as well, I know that before, but now I do know, I just knew it was too much to handle in one day. And I have to say that this is challenging for me, because we are in the book of Hebrews chapter 2 and there's a specific passage from 10 to 18 that John has been impressing me that needs to be. We need to focus on and have communion. And so these three Sundays, we're having communion all three days. So we will have communion again. No, it's not that I forgot to put everything away. Chloe, wondered. Are we doing it again that she said, did he forget to put it away again today? So here is a difficult to difficult. This is meat, Hebrews is me. And so I have really thought to this timeline and I want it may feel like I'm over explaining where we're going today. The intention is for me to not. Get get you guys lost as we go along, okay? So but first, let's read the passage and if you don't catch all of it and first, since to me all of it, that's okay. Because he bruise is a difficult book while the most difficult books, probably the most difficult book in the in the New Testament, but here it goes, the writer says for it, it was fitting that he meaning, Jesus, we've already been talking about Jesus feeding for him, Jesus for whom, and by whom all things exist in Should make the founder of their salvation, perfect. Remember when we said found her last week? You remember what we called? We said that wind up with, he's the founder, but he's what he's a pioneer. He's a pioneer, he's gone forward and into that place before us and has cut away all the weeds and cut all the hard parts so that we might have we have a lewiston-clarkston speaker and paved the way. Okay? He is the Pioneer, he has the the founder of their salvation perfect through suffering, for He Who sanctifies. And those who are Sanctified, have one source. That is why he is not ashamed to call them brothers. Now, when it says to make their salvation, perfect, Jesus was already perfect. You didn't have to make himself perfect. Yesterday and took forever. He's the same. It's not that he had to correct something or do something better, so we can be perfect. If that's that's a bring to fruition the whole thing, he has to come Among Us. He had to do it. And you'll see here in a little bit for him to have the functions that he is a Pioneer and a brother. And next week, we'll see a priest, a Pioneer in a brother and a priest he had among us to fulfill that not that he wasn't perfect before. Things have come full circle, so to speak. All right, so he's not ashamed to call them brothers. Saying, I will tell of your name to my brothers. In the midst of the congregation. I will send you the praise. And again, I will praise my, I will put my trust in him. And again, behold I and the and the children God has given since there for the children, share in Flesh and Blood himself. I spliced took part two of the same things that through death. He might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is the devil and delivered. All those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong slavery. For surely he is not is not angels that he helped but he helps The Offspring of Abraham. Therefore he had to be made like his brothers in every aspect so that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people. But for because he became because he himself has suffered when tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted now. The idea that we saw in there this time is that Jesus is our brother. He's a brother he's not just the pioneer he's our brother. Remember glory in his presence not just Glory that we're trying to get you but glory in his presence as he's with us as as a brother. We're we're brothers and sisters of Christ in This Is Amazing by the way. And so Hebrews is now going to be explained. Well let's let's start up to 11. It says he who sanctifies and those who are signed card defied. All have one source. That is why he's not ashamed to call them brothers. Now The one? Who sang that's him. And the one is Sanctified. That's us, right? We are have one source. Now, this is a little bit, your member I told us is difficult. We have one source. Doesn't mean we all come from that, that we have
Okay, I have to I have to be very careful, not say what I, what I shouldn't say, which is wrong. Here's what I want to say. Some translations will say he is, they are all of One. Which is little bit nebulous. Some will say of one family. Some may say of one father and if you're in the NES be and you had said his father, it has in italicize, the word father to signify to you that the word father is not actually in a text but is trying to convey something. So the idea is that we are of one
Is that clear? I want to make it clear but not unclear. We are of one and I think the best way to think of this is a family. We are of the same family. So when he says he brings many sons to Glory sons of God, is smallest sons of God. We can be Sons and Daughters of God small, but he is the capital as Son of God, which makes him different. I mean, realize he is the Son of God. In fact, he is God, come to be with us. We don't become the Son of God. We become Sons and Daughters of God. And so we have one father, we have one in comments, but yet still we have a distinction that's different. Now, you may say, why are you being so careful about words and mincing words? Because somebody goes to the place where they say, well if I could come Son of God, then I guess I'm a goddamn I think I can be a little God. You cannot you can pretend to be a little guy.
We are sons of God. Brother to Christ brother to Jesus. And he is the Son of God. What a major part of the family so the what is slipping said he is, he's not not afraid to call us or ashamed to call us and in that has the double negative which makes it stronger. He's not ashamed, not ashamed, not not liking so to speak or not, not accepting. He's not, he's not saying we're not, but we are brothers. Does it make you feel good today that you would see that Jesus would say? Yeah. They're my brother.
Wow. we worship him as God and he says, They're Brothers when Jesus says your brothers or he's your brother, it doesn't mean that you are exactly. It means that you have the same father, you have the same family. You are, you are of one. You see that you not you're not the same but you are of one. I think I may be a task the best thing I said so far today is in distinguishing that and I hope you didn't miss that cuz I'm not sure I can repeat it. So as we go on, he's called his brother. Now remember I said Jesus had to come among us to be what he is the priest. Who is Chief among his brothers. It says, he's a priest to become a priest, he has to come and be among Brothers, the priest? Who is Chief among his brothers on whom head is Anointed oil on Ford and who has been consecrated to wear the garments shall not let his hair of his head, hang loose in our tears clothes. So what we see right here is that the one who is going to be priest, has to be among the brothers until Jesus comes and heat. It's not only that he is the Pioneer. He has to be brother in order for him to be what we're going to talk about next week as priests, you can't buy Leviticus. You can't be a priest without being a brother.
And he has condescended or come down to be that the way yeah to relate to us. Amazing, we haven't even got to the difficult stuff yet. We are family. This, the first point I want one to make your family. Jesus says they're my brothers.
We're family. Now comes the difficult part. I put this up here in this form in the ESV like this because this is what it might look like in your Bible. We read it before. We register eat, three of them there in his passing. As he says we're brothers, I want explain what's going on and the writer of Hebrews quote, Psalm 22, he quotes Isaiah 8:17 and 18, two places, three quotes and we're going to go through those today. But I will we're going to come back to this page right here, and this is going to show you how you see in quotes saying quotation, I will tell of your name to Luke to my brothers in the mist of the congregation. I will send your bracelet that's actually pull out of an Old Testament, scripture in Psalms 22, and then I will put my trust in him and that is another cordless pulled out of Isaiah 8:17. And then the next one behold I and the children God has given me is a quote that has pulled out of Isaiah 818. Portion of it, not all of it. But what you need to see is the writer of Hebrews. He thinks I'm smart
Anything. So I know what do you means when he says these things? I had to look it up because there's connotations to all of these things and he's saying things without saying the things he's saying, thanks by quoting scriptures, that people would have been looking forward to in Jesus day. They know the Old Testament scriptures. They knew that these things were to be and when he was, when the writer of Hebrews juices, be three specific quotes which to me I kind of lost on me. It was over my head, it would be for him to say to people
and this is who caused that to happen and this is who you are. Wow. We're going to take a look at those three things today, I tell you the name, the names, I tell your name to the brothers, in the midst of the congregation, I will sing your Praises. So we're going to go right there with that, that is. And now I'm I'm I'm wondering if I made a wise choice because I put the whole of Psalm 42 in here and just don't please don't. Don't check out on me just because we're going to go through a story here. Psalm 22 is a Messianic song and it is one that speaks of Jesus, it's David and David's Bridal about himself, but David is also writing Prophetically about Christ and you'll see some of the things about price to do that. Well that happened to what was that happened to him also. So let's take a look at it right now. Bear with me. I'm going to read fast cuz we going to go through this and kind of an old-fashioned. So don't don't get hung up on it. And as we go, I'm kind of skimming. Sometimes I read faster than I understand.
My God. My God, why have you forsaken me? Of course, that makes sense. Remember the cross? What did Jesus say? Why did you forsake me? Why have you forsaken me? Why are you so far from saving me from the words of my groaning. All my God, I Cry by day, but you do not answer and by night, but I find No Rest yet. You Are Holy and throw it on the Praises of Israel in our father's trusted, they trusted and delivered them and you to you, they cried and were rescued in you. They trust then we're not put to shame but I am a worm and not a man scorned by some despised by the people, all who see me mock me. They make mouths at me. Ever heard that make mouse with you. What does that mean? Mickey Mouse at you. I'll talk about that in just a second and they wag their heads, He trusts in the Lord let him deliver him. Let him rescue for he Delights in him. So I had to spend going to have to eat. You ever, had somebody look at you and with despising Has anybody ever looked at you? And you just thought they looking at you with contempt and spice to spice. Spices. What's in the cabinet?
Despising, you, we were driving home, and she was driving and she decided to go in the shop and I was following and I decided I thought she's going to be. So she turned around and went. Okay, so I pulled in the store to. I said, you like to go there. I would like to go there. Would you like to go there? I don't particularly care to go there. Okay, then I'll go by myself and have a medical problem.
She shot places, I don't and so crazy. But as we had that conversation, I put the car in reverse and I pull back out and somebody else to come in at Love's on to the side street. And they thing that I have done wrong because I pull out of a parking space that actually is farther down the road. Then, the entry point to the road, where they came on the road to hear all of my arguments in here, as I'm justifying why I was right in the situation. Anyway, they had to stop because they came out before, I got out of the way, and they shouldn't start it. But anyway, they must have been in her and I could see him in the rearview mirror. You ever see people in your rearview mirror.
Do you know sometimes you got to be careful how you look at people when they're looking at you in the rearview mirror cuz you just might park in the same place down the road, and then it's awkward. Why'd you make mouse at me? Why do you make vows at me and wagon? So we came up to the stop light and I thought, well, thankfully, it's green so that she can go on by, but I could tell that she was going by Sheetz. Man, it's like she had eating a lemon or something. She had such disgust for me and that moment. And I think that's wagon your head. And Mickey Mouse.
But that's how they treated Jesus, isn't it?
Your brother. Your brother. More than that your pioneer. if they only knew what he was doing for them, When they made miles and wagged their head. David had the same situation people were making Mouse at him and wagging their headed him. He's writing about it here in the song, but let's continue on. I know we said I said we're going to quit
Yeah, you are. He who took me from the womb you made me trust you at my mother's breast on, you was a on. You was I cast for my birth and from my mother might have been, you have been my God. Be not far from me or trouble is near and there is none to help many bowls. And Compass me, strong Bulls of Bashan, surround me and they open their mouths at me, like the ravening and roaring lion. I am poured out like water and all my bones are out of joint. My heart is like Wax melts. In my breath, my strength is dried up like a potsherd and my tongue stick to my job. You lay me in the Justice doesn't sound like I'm thirsty. He says, I thirst. And so also that your dogs and comes me a company of evil doors in circles, man, that pierced, my hands and feet. And how many years before and I count, I can count all my bones. They stare and gloat over me. They divide, my garments among them and for my clothing, they cast lots, but you, oh, Lord, do not be far off of Do my help come quickly to my eBay and deliver my soul from The Sword. My precious life, from the power of the dog. Save me from the mouth of the lion. You have rescued me from the horns of the wild oxen. I will tell of your name to my brothers in the midst of the congregation. Hello, there it is. Did you see that? That's our quote right there in 22. but what's happened in the story is,
Jesus has gone to the cross and now he's raised in Victory and where is he? He's in the congregation and he's telling God, the father, he's telling, he's telling his brothers, he's telling the brothers of God and all that God has done an amazing. This is a victory song right here. It was death and defeat and has now turned into Victory song. 22 goes down to the depths in all the way to the heights. This is God is sitting at the right in, this is Jesus sitting at the right hand of the father. Any saying I will tell my brothers. Of how good God is and what I will praise you. So when the rain or paper says this quote, it has to be in there. A Jewish Believers to think he's talking about Victory. She's talking about victory. And who you who fear the Lord? Praise him. There's a command right there. You are him. Praise him. All you want spring of Jacob. Glorify glorify you. And in all
You know comes into my mind. I wonder if this is where that song came from I stand I stand in all of you I stand I stand in all of you holy God all praise is due I standing
All you are spring of Israel. For he has not despised. He has not despised. I'm thinking, wow, that was not the person in the car behind me. With the mouth gaping in the wagon head, he is not the spies reported Afflicted of The Afflicted, the Affliction of The Afflicted. He has not hidden his face from him, but he has heard when he cries to Pride to him. This is, this is the Son of God in the congregation telling the people, this is Bugatti. This is who the father is your part of this family. You're a part of this. And so he says from you comes to my praising, the great congregation my valves, I will perform before those who fear Him The Afflicted Shelly to be satisfied. Those seeking shall praise. Lord, may your heart to live forever is just like that's like a great exclamation! I already feel like I'm shouting at you, but that right there is a huge one. All the ends of the Earth shall remember and turn to the Lord, and all the families, and they shall worship before you in, this is a crescendo, it's getting louder. Louder and louder for kingship Belongs to the Lord in Hebrew, worship, a prosperous of the earth. And before him shall bow, all who go down to dust, even the one who could not keep himself alive, posterity Shall Serve him. He shall be told of the Lord to the coming generation. And even to this, they shall come and Proclaim his righteousness to the people get on board that he has done. that ends on a high note, doesn't the writer of Hebrews when he says, he's saying the Son of God is Victorious. This is shorthand for the Son of God is Victorious. By the way in Hebrew, she have to think about some of the difficult stuff that said there, because it's not translated correctly. Answer about the book of Hebrews Jesus is used the name. Jesus ask him in the earth, not that he's different. He is the same, but he's the son of God. When he's before God, it's Jesus. Who is among Jesus? It's is, is him at Among Us a walking in and doing all the things he did. So, the Son of God is Victorious before the throne That's what that means right there. So basically though it says, he's not ashamed to call us Brothers, saying I'm Victorious.
You see the short hand? I will tell your name to my brothers, in the midst of the congregation. I will sing your praise and in their minds was going the rest of the song that goes on and on. And she knows about the greatness of our Pioneer has opened the way to be with us and not ashamed to call us Brothers in the place. Oh man, oh man, that's good. You know, how many, how many your bosses would say? Yeah, they're their brother of mine. I'm just saying the time in this world people that have authority over other people outside of the church. It should be this way among us, but outside the church people like to put their thumb on people and say, no, I'm in charge it. Are pioneers open the way for us to be there and he's glad we're going to be with him. That awesome.
As a brother, wow. All right, so we're going to go on to the other to say and these get a little bit harder. I took the first one is basically pointed. The fact that he's there is Victorious before gone and paper away number 13. And again I will put my trust in here. Makes sense, makes perfect sense, but if you go to the Isaiah 8 passage, you will see some more meaning to that other than I trust in the Lord. Trust in the Lord, with all your heart standing, right? But we see in Isaiah chapter 8 which is actually kind of a difficult place. It has two parts. The first part of a quote is the first quotation that we had. I will wait for the Lord who is hiding his face from the house of Jacob and I will hope in him. Wait a minute, I will hope in him. Okay, little bit of technical. Okay, the writer is Hebrews is working off of probably, the Greek Old Testament that he has in his time. And the group were there is translated in that as Trust. And so even though the Old Testament and Isaiah, the Greek version has trust. And so this is this is what could be, why those are different? Let's take a look at that this right quick and Psalm 18:2. The Lord is my rock, and my Fortress, and my deliverer, my God, my rock and my salvation. My stronghold back to this. The God is my he is, he is Maya sure. He's my I have confidence because of Jesus.
Now.
oh,
I'm going back because what I have to explain is. Okay, this is kind of difficult because the most difficult book in the New Testament for me is being translated and and the writer. If he versus, let me make it, let me to make it a little more clear for you and uses one of the most difficult books for me in the Old Testament, which is all that. Made it clear. So, the prophet Isaiah is being used to explain what the writer of Hebrews means in, in his meaty discourse. And that's where this portion comes from these two right here. First part is about our confidence in him. So, let me go on and you'll see that when it says, I put my trust in him. I put my hope in you. That is the first portion of that, that's in Isaiah. Now, the second one is behold. I and the children God has given me comes from that second. Second part which Okay, I told you confidence in God's deliverance, we have confidence in God's Deliverance in the first one. And then in this second part behold, I and the children, God has given me. Is right there. Behold. I and the children, whom the Lord has given me are signs and portents in Israel from The Lord of hosts who dwells on Mount Zion. So not all of that is in there, but when he says the first part, it means all of it. And what this really is saying. Okay, let me see if I've got the rest of this up in here, I do. So basically, What's Happening Here is don't act like is real right now. God is telling Isaiah don't act like his real, don't call conspiracy what they call a conspiracy because they're not following me right now. He's really is not right with God during this and Isaiah's writing. And so he said I'm not going to I'm not going to help them this difficult spot. They they're going to stumble many will stumble and fall The Broken Pieces behind up. This testimony still at teaching among my disciples. So even among an Unfaithful Israel, there's disciples that Isaiah supposed to speak to and say these things. There's like a Remnant you ever feel like the last one left, it's hanging on. Nij people were not following the Lord, but some of you were and Isaiah was speaking to them. He saying this, I will wait for the Lord. Who is the hiding? Hiding? His face from the house of Jacob, and I will hope in him. Behold, I and the children whom the Lord has, given me are signs and portents in Israel from The Lord of hosts. Okay? So he's talking about a Remnant and he's also talking about literally his Isaiah's, children's names. Mean, I will trust in the Lord and if she's got Godly name and so they're actually signs that point to who God is, even though is far from me. He says I am and so the writer if he is quoting Isaiah in that moment where he says everybody else.
He's got victory. My confidence is in him first part and the second part of my identity, who am I? look at this, we get to 17 and 18 and says, behold I and the children we are signed basically what the Hebrew writer is saying in here is, God is victorious, victorious, at the hand of the father, We have confidence in him, he's our confidence. And also, we are brothers. He's not afraid to call them brothers because of these things because we call upon the father, because the one who sanctifies, the ones who are Sanctified are of one family, we have the same father, we are together and so our identity identity of God's people
So those three things are being spoken and you might say, wow, that's really hard. That's that's difficult. I hope, I remember those things. If you can say this is there's Victory where Jesus is at the hand of the father because because of what God has done in raising him from the dead, are we can have our confidence in him. Part A Part B. R identity is in a Scots people and those two things. So, why did he take that one? Passage in 8 and split apart? Because it needs to be to Van. It needs to be, he wants to be specific. He says Christ is Victorious up there and he's done all this and he wants to call his brother. Let me be more specific. we have a confidence in him and we have our identity.
So that hopefully explains to you that those three passages we went through one was the full statement and in Isaiah he takes two different parts of the same passage to break him and make an intense statement. On both of those things could have been you ever have one thing and and somebody comes along points out, there's two things in the new year.
The writer is Hebrews is teaching the listener. He's teaching the reader, pull those two apart because there's two fantastic things in there that maybe are summarized in the fact that he is or the father as Victorious. Jesus is Victorious over death. Hey man.
And so we have our identity in him. Because we have our confidence in because we trust in him, we hope in him. This is what we do. You believe in God. Do you trust him?
Are you brother and sister with you?
It is altogether, Hughes sanctifies the one who sang, spider, One Source. Your family is not ashamed to call them brothers. And then we have these three things. Can you think of them in your own mind saying? He's up there. our confidence is in him and again, We are. That's alright, entity since they're for the children. Share in Flesh and Blood himself likewise for two of the same thing.
So, all this fits together as one passage and it's almost really it's difficult for me to pull these apart. We have three things that were talking about the Pioneer, our brother, and he's our priests, and they all intermingle with one another, and we'll see more of that next time. But today, I want to just think, think about this as we are going to take communion And this is that time if they're listening to me and you're downstairs and they can hear that, it's time to come upstairs. They might be making their way up here for communion. I want you just meet, you may feel uncomfortable about this because sometimes we have communion. You think this is a very somber thing. And we, in fact, it could have been this last week, but I think we have the habit of thank you. This is how we're supposed to feel about communion. Yes. It, it does represent that Jesus died for us, but it also represents the things we've seen who sang last after the song the song, This is Jesus. This is Jesus and it almost was like we didn't want to feel full bore as we were doing that. But communion is it that can be joyous. Right. If it's a, it's a celebration of what he is in today. I'd like to focus on this. He's our brother He is our savior. These are pioneer. But yet, he wants to have connection with us. He calls us to the table to say, eat and drink with us. This is, this is, this is to me. And so with that, thought in mind, I want you to, I'm giving you permission Today, to take communion joyfully. You can, you can have joy as you take him today. And we really want you also to ask yourself what, what is this that we do today? The bread and the juice our representation,
Of his body and blood that was shed for us and broken for us. But really it's what have you done? Have you had confidence in him? Have you put your trust in you? And you may not realize what communion this all about if you're supposed to do this or not. But I will say this doesn't mean you're joining. Sure to do anything. We have an open communion, which means you can come forward and we are going to come forward today. We're going to come row by row and we're going to do is going to start and if you want to come, go ahead and come with your row star the front row, you come here and if you could go around and enter your Row from this side. So we're going to come forward in and partake of the bread and the juice together and these symbol represent that God has done something in your life. You're welcome to come and eat this. If you say I want to follow them, I want that he is Victorious. I believe he's Victorious. My trust is in him. And I want my identity to be with you. If that's you today, you can come partake. So let's pray right mcevilly. Father. We thank you. And we ask you to bless these elements that are representing your body blood. Thank you, that you want to have connection with us. We want to be connected with you. And so today as we hear these things that are coming up next, I pray that you would just help us on the shoulder. If there's anything, we need to pray about anything. We need to confess to you or any sin to be forgiven in Jesus name. Amen. Now, before we do this, I do want to go to one more line. In the Hebrews passage at the end. It says this. Remember when we said poor because he himself has suffered when tempted he is able to help those who are being tempted. I just okay this maybe is too trite but it's a real example. Chocolate. You noticed you noticed, chocolate a lot. When you decided not to eat chocolate for a while. That makes sense. Jimmy just recently and then downstairs when you're being tempted now just forgiven your sins but don't realize this is not the end, you will be tempted but when you're tempted know that he can help you in Temptation and just because you have sinned or fail before, doesn't mean, oh well, I'll go ahead because I've already messed it up. No, this is one of those times where we, we take communion and celebrate that were forgiven. And then were part of the family were brothers with Christ and he will help you. From this point forward in Temptation, that you might not send right? You are not alone, you're not alone. And when I say that, I don't mean, if you're being tempted, Jesus is there seeing if you're going to fail, know, when you're tempted, Jesus is there and has been tempted like why he can help do you believe that? Amen. All right. So I'm going to start the communion hear Jesus Took the bread that night and he broke it and he's just taken heed of it, all of you because of my body broken for you. And he also took the cup and said, drink of it. All of you. This is the blood of the, New Covenant shed for the Forgiveness of your sins. And so as we go into Community Jeff, you might go ahead and tell you.
