Main Passage
Main Passage
Now Moses was pasturing the flock of his father-in-law Jethro, the priest of Midian; and he led the flock to the west side of the wilderness and came to Horeb, the mountain of God. Then the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a blazing fire from the midst of a bush; and he looked, and behold, the bush was burning with fire, yet the bush was not being consumed. So Moses said, “I must turn aside and see this marvelous sight, why the bush is not burning up!” When the Lord saw that he turned aside to look, God called to him from the midst of the bush and said, “Moses, Moses!” And he said, “Here I am.

Behold Him
Introduction
Introduction
Story
Application
Not feeling God, losing zeal or diligence (Romans 12:11) because we believe God isn’t with us, disappointed in us or hiding from us. God doesn’t hide from us but for us:
It is the glory of God to conceal a matter, but the glory of kings is to search out a matter.
God is calling us to ascend the mountain of the Lord. To go higher, to go deeper.
Who may ascend onto the hill of the Lord?
And who may stand in His holy place?
Seeking God with all our hearts.
Every work which Hezekiah began in the service of the house of God in the Law and in the commandment, seeking his God, Hezekiah did with all his heart and prospered.
Transitional Sentence
Transitional Sentence
What keeps us down, from going higher in the Lord, lacking zeal or diligence in seeking Him
Point 1: Lack of humility
Point 1: Lack of humility
Explanation
The simply truth for the lack of zeal in our life is because of pride; full of self. It’s self-help, self-preservation, self-dependent, self-reliant and self-sufficiency. We think we don’t need God.
Illustration
1 — Verse
“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
2 — Quote
Andrew Murray
“We must be nothing that God might be all.”
3 — Verse
Who, as He already existed in the form of God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but emptied Himself by taking the form of a bond-servant and being born in the likeness of men.
4 Quote
Andrew Murray
“He resigned himself with His will and His power entirely for the father to work in Him.”
Application
We must humble ourselves before God and recognize our need in light of who He is. Our dependence on Jesus must reflect how Jesus depended on the Father.
Point 2: Salvation complex
Point 2: Salvation complex
Explanation
Maturity is recognizing that salvation is entirely God’s work, and sanctification is God’s work in which we actively participate through surrender and obedience.
Illustration
Dear friends, you always followed my instructions when I was with you. And now that I am away, it is even more important. Work hard to show the results of your salvation, obeying God with deep reverence and fear. For God is working in you, giving you the desire and the power to do what pleases him.
But you, Timothy, are a man of God; so run from all these evil things. Pursue righteousness and a godly life, along with faith, love, perseverance, and gentleness.
Application
We don’t just surrender at salvation, we surrender daily. Picking up our cross daily and dying so that the life and fire of God can burn in us constantly.
Point 3: Busy Spirits
Point 3: Busy Spirits
Explanation
We lack passion because we make the excuse that we are too busy for the Lord.
Illustration
Now as they were traveling along, He entered a village; and a woman named Martha welcomed Him into her home. And she had a sister called Mary, who was also seated at the Lord’s feet, and was listening to His word. But Martha was distracted with all her preparations; and she came up to Him and said, “Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me to do the serving by myself? Then tell her to help me.” But the Lord answered and said to her, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and distracted by many things; but only one thing is necessary; for Mary has chosen the good part, which shall not be taken away from her.”
The seed that fell among the thorns represents those who hear God’s word, but all too quickly the message is crowded out by the worries (i.e. distraction) of this life and the lure of wealth, so no fruit is produced.
As for what was sown among thorns, this is the one who hears the word, but the cares (distraction) of the world and the deceitfulness of riches choke the word, and it proves unfruitful.
Application
To be too busy for God is a distraction.
Point 4: Sin and shame
Point 4: Sin and shame
Explanation
Sin and shame harms fellowship and intimacy with God.
Illustration
Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us.
Application
Our sin and shame is a weight that entangles us. It keeps us from running the race with perseverance and passion.
It’s a weight we were never meant to carry. Jesus has already paid for our sin and despised the shame on the cross.
Which leads me to my next point…
Point 5: Turned aside from beholding Him
Point 5: Turned aside from beholding Him
Explanation
The only reason why we lack humility, have a salvation complex, busy spirits and bear the weight of our sin and shame — which results in apathy, lack of zeal and diligence in pursing Jesus — is because we’ve turned aside from beholding Him.

Application
So what
So what
When we behold Jesus, we can’t help but to burn.
Now what
Now what
looking only at Jesus, the originator and perfecter of the faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.
