Mission continued through his followers

Why does this matter?

Because Luke wants to show and convince his readers that what Jesus did His Church is to do.
The church is the vehicle - powered by the spirit
Car and gas analogy - God could pick another car
That’s not just them
Not just “Pastors”
It’s you too - Peter was a fisherman
I fear the Church has lost its Mission.
We too often go to church for us. To get something out of it. Because of my hard time.
Imagine prepping for an interview. You feel nervous and want to wear the right thing.
Hours picking clothes that fit and look good.
Sending pictures to friends
It’s easier to fixate on something small and controllable than something big and uncertain.
The problem is its only a small part of the bigger picture
We are the church and need to do what Jesus did. (surrender)

2 half's to Jesus’ Mission - Salvation & Spirit Baptism

(Profits - like Joel, Jerimiah)
Luke 1-3 Birth
Luke 4 Temptation and start of ministry
Luke 5 Calls his disciples
Luke 6:40 “40 Students are not greater than their teacher. But the student who is fully trained will become like the teacher.”
Luke 9 Jesus sends his disciple out to cast out demons and heal diseases
Luke 9:23–25 “23 Then he said to the crowd, “If any of you wants to be my follower, you must give up your own way, take up your cross daily, and follow me. 24 If you try to hang on to your life, you will lose it. But if you give up your life for my sake, you will save it. 25 And what do you benefit if you gain the whole world but are yourself lost or destroyed?”
Jesus’ Temptation
This is Mission Language!
Surrender
Fathers and giving gifts
Luke 11:11–13 “11 “You fathers—if your children ask for a fish, do you give them a snake instead? 12 Or if they ask for an egg, do you give them a scorpion? Of course not! 13 So if you sinful people know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him.””
Jesus’ Prophecy of the Work of the Holy Spirit
Luke 12:11–12 “11 “And when you are brought to trial in the synagogues and before rulers and authorities, don’t worry about how to defend yourself or what to say, 12 for the Holy Spirit will teach you at that time what needs to be said.””
Luke ends the first scroll
Luke 24:46–49 “46 And he said, “Yes, it was written long ago that the Messiah would suffer and die and rise from the dead on the third day. 47 It was also written that this message would be proclaimed in the authority of his name to all the nations, beginning in Jerusalem: ‘There is forgiveness of sins for all who repent.’ 48 You are witnesses of all these things. 49 “And now I will send the Holy Spirit, just as my Father promised. But stay here in the city until the Holy Spirit comes and fills you with power from heaven.””
Look at what Jesus said! Look at what we have today!
God’s aim is to bring salvation in all of its fullness to all
Acts 1:1–3 “1 In my first book I told you, Theophilus, about everything Jesus began to do and teach 2 until the day he was taken up to heaven after giving his chosen apostles further instructions through the Holy Spirit. 3 During the forty days after he suffered and died, he appeared to the apostles from time to time, and he proved to them in many ways that he was actually alive. And he talked to them about the Kingdom of God.”
