Sound Judgment and Sober Spirit
7 The end of all things is near; therefore, be of sound judgment and sober spirit for the purpose of prayer.
“Sober spirit” Gr “Nepho” –
1. To be sober, to be calm and collected in spirit.
2. To be temperate, dispassionate, circumspect.
“Sound judgment” Gr “Sophroneo”
1. To be of sound mind – to exercise self-control; to put a moderate estimate upon one’s self; to curb one’s passions
“Sophronos” - root word
“it suggest the exercise of that self-restraint that governs all passions and desires, enabling the believer to be conformed to the mind of Christ.”
(same word is used of Gadarene after Jesus touched him - “in his right mind”)
OT Picture of a man or woman w/sober spirit and sound judgment
4 Light arises in the darkness for the upright;
He is gracious and compassionate and righteous.
5 It is well with the man who is gracious and lends;
He will maintain his cause in judgment.
6 For he will never be shaken;
The righteous will be remembered forever.
7 He will not fear evil tidings;
His heart is steadfast, trusting in the Lord.
8 His heart is upheld, he will not fear,
Until he looks with satisfaction on his adversaries.
He has light even in darkness vs. 4
He is gracious, compassionate, and righteous v. 4
He is generous vs. 5 (“Lends” has the thought of someone who makes a loan to someone but doesn’t expect it to be paid back)
He is stable vs. 6
He is steadfast vs. 7
He is unafraid vs. 8

13 Therefore, prepare your minds for action, keep sober in spirit, fix your hope completely on the grace to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ.
“Prepare your minds for action” = “gird up the loins of your mind” (KJV)
(A figure of speech .based on the gathering and fastening up of the long Eastern garments so that they would not interfere with the individual’s activity)
A sober spirited person will not be paralyzed but will be prepared to act - to move when He says move!
“Sweat equity”
A sober spirited person will not be hopeless but full of hope.
14 As obedient children, do not be conformed to the former lusts which were yours in your ignorance,
15 but like the Holy One who called you, be holy yourselves also in all your behavior;
16 because it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.”
A sober-spirited person will be an obedient child and holy in his or her behavior. (Set apart)
8 Be of sober spirit, be on the alert. Your adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.
9 But resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same experiences of suffering are being accomplished by your brethren who are in the world.
A sober-spirited person will always be on the alert. He is cognizant of the fact that he has an enemy who wants to destroy him.
A sober-spirited person will resist the wiles of the devil by being firm in his faith.
4 But you, brethren, are not in darkness, that the day would overtake you like a thief;
5 for you are all sons of light and sons of day. We are not of night nor of darkness;
6 so then let us not sleep as others do, but let us be alert and sober.
7 For those who sleep do their sleeping at night, and those who get drunk get drunk at night.
8 But since we are of the day, let us be sober, having put on the breastplate of faith and love, and as a helmet, the hope of salvation.
Notice how this works hand-in-glove with 1 Peter 5. Same thought!
Breastplate protects your heart - put on faith, put on love (for God and for others) - it is an action!
Helmet protects your mind - put on the hope of salvation
11 Therefore encourage one another and build up one another, just as you also are doing.
A person who is sober-spirited is a person who is always encouraging others in the house of God; building others up. Doesn’t stay down-in-the-dumps. Eager to build others up.
We need to move from the debit side of the ledger to the credit side in 2026!
7 The end of all things is near; therefore, be of sound judgment and sober spirit for the purpose of prayer.
He is heavenly-minded - lives with the end in view (life is but a vapor)
His sober-mindedness gives him the ability to pray more effectively. He’s not always having to be pulled out of the ditch!
7 For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.
(Sound mind = sound judgment in 1 Peter 4:7)
A person with sound mind does not have spirit of fear - not intimidated.
Also translated self-control - is able to control his human passions.
Spirit of power = Dunamis (we get “dynamite” from this word) is miraculous power
Spirit of love = agape
11 For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all men,
12 instructing us to deny ungodliness and worldly desires and to live sensibly, righteously and godly in the present age,
13 looking for the blessed hope and the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Christ Jesus,
14 who gave Himself for us to redeem us from every lawless deed, and to purify for Himself a people for His own possession, zealous for good deeds.
Sensibly in vs. 12 = sound mind or sound judgment (sophronos)
7 “Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord
And whose trust is the Lord.
8 “For he will be like a tree planted by the water,
That extends its roots by a stream
And will not fear when the heat comes;
But its leaves will be green,
And it will not be anxious in a year of drought
Nor cease to yield fruit.
If this picture of a man of sound judgment and sober spirit does not match you exactly (we all have areas to work on here!), there is a lovely Bible word that applies here...
Repent!
Where we’ve missed the mark, there is grace available to cover our failures.
Let’s make it our New Year’s resolution (maybe covenant is a better word) to have a more sober spirit and sound mind in 2026!
