Old Habits......

Can’t Teach an Old Dog.......

A Leopard Can’t Change.......

You Can Lead a Horse to Water........

12 In these days he went out to the mountain to pray, and all night he continued in prayer to God. 13 And when day came, he called his disciples and chose from them twelve, whom he named apostles: 14 Simon, whom he named Peter, and Andrew his brother, and James and John, and Philip, and Bartholomew, 15 and Matthew, and Thomas, and James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon who was called the Zealot, 16 and Judas the son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor.

Zealot opposition to Roman rule was rooted in zeal for the Torah, and for God the only King. The Zealot regarded himself as an agent of divine judgment and redemption. The Zealots represented an anti-Roman movement that was religious and political. The movement’s followers operated under the motto “No Lord but God,”.

With their final stronghold at Masada falling in AD 73, when approximately 960 survivors chose suicide over surrender.2 Since Luke wrote after these events had become historically significant, Simon the apostle probably belonged to the movement’s earlier phase around AD 30.
Zealots are prepared to die for their cause.

13 And when they had entered, they went up to the upper room, where they were staying, Peter and John and James and Andrew, Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew, James the son of Alphaeus and Simon the Zealot and Judas the son of James. 14 All these with one accord were devoting themselves to prayer, together with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and his brothers.

Simon was zealous, he was passionate for a cause.

But was it the right cause?
Seeking the Messiah to overthrow the Roman occupation.
Do you ever ask if you are going the wrong way?
What if the wrong way is leading you to hell?

Paying Taxes to Caesar

15 Then the Pharisees went and plotted how to entangle him in his words. 16 And they sent their disciples to him, along with the Herodians, saying, “Teacher, we know that you are true and teach the way of God truthfully, and you do not care about anyone’s opinion, for you are not swayed by appearances. 17 Tell us, then, what you think. Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar, or not?” 18 But Jesus, aware of their malice, said, “Why put me to the test, you hypocrites? 19 Show me the coin for the tax.” And they brought him a denarius. 20 And Jesus said to them, “Whose likeness and inscription is this?” 21 They said, “Caesar’s.” Then he said to them, “Therefore render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.” 22 When they heard it, they marveled. And they left him and went away.

Jesus lived and taught submission to authority. Ultimately, all authority comes from God. When you honor the authorities God has established, you honor God. Jesus lived out his example for the disciples to follow.

14 Afterward he appeared to the eleven themselves as they were reclining at table, and he rebuked them for their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they had not believed those who saw him after he had risen. 15 And he said to them, “Go into all the world and proclaim the gospel to the whole creation. 16 Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned.

Simon received a new cause, and a new purpose.
Simon the Zealot participated in key early church events—he was present in the upper room on Resurrection Sunday and the following Monday, witnessed Jesus’ ascension. He was present during Pentecost.
Died by Crucifixion or be being sawn in half.

23 And he said to all, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. 24 For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it.

Simon learned from the Master.
Not deliverance from man, but deliverance from God.
Real freedom comes from surrender.
Freedom from sin and self. “So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”” ‭‭John‬ ‭8‬:‭31‬-‭32‬ ‭ESV
John 14:6 ESV
Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
Recognize the Truth
John 17:17 ESV
Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth.
Know the Truth
John 4:24 ESV
God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.”
Follow the Truth
Jesus is the truth.
God does the changing. Through his word and spirit.
Do you have the freedom Christ offers?
Jesus doesn’t fix your old life he gives you a new life.
2 Corinthians 5:17 ESV
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.
Admit you have sinned against God (Repent)
Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ (Believe)
Confess Jesus Christ is Lord of Your Life (Confess)
