Introduction
In all of our lives there should come a time were we reach a turning point in our life. As Christians and believer we all are battling something. If we were to be honest with ourselves tonight, we can admit that we stand in need of being delivered from something. We all have a problem! Something is weighing on our mind and heart. There is some addiction or problem that we are trying to hide and keep others from seeing. Sadly some of us are deceiving our own self. Some problem, some addiction, some battle is trying to take over us. Tonight if we were to keep it real just a for a moment somebody can say “I’m trapped in a two way love affair” between living right and this addiction.
We can admit that we really didn’t intend to go this far with this battle nor the addiction. Somebody can admit or testify like brother O.V wright I’m into something I can’t shake loose.
There are times that you don’t even realize that you are in a battle or dealing with an addiction until it has began to take over your everyday life and thoughts. Despite what you may be facing tonight can I submit to you my brothers and sister that deliverance is still possible. No matter how bad it may look, how it may feel or even how long you been dealing with it. Can I let somebody tonight know that God can still deliver. Can I tell you that he has lost his ability to pull you out of whatever situation that you are in.
John 4:28 Captures the effects of one who stood in need of deliverance and got what she needed. She was going about her normal routine and did not know that she had a problem and needed a deliver! Before we get to high on the hog and judgmental, she’s not the only one that walking around in need of being delivered.
The text captures a quiet but powerful turning point in the life of one that had become accustomed to labels that society had placed on her. Can I let somebody know that you ought not get comfortable with the labels that the world has placed on you. There was no miracle of thunder. There was no public altar call. There was no big announcement. No paperboy was running through town saying extra extra read all about it this woman is about to be delivered.
When God is about to do something for you, don't always look for a firework and a big show of what he is doing. Deliverance does not always look dramatic but it is always decisive. In other word God knows what he is doing and sometimes all he need is an audience of one to deliver.
She came to her normal spot to do what she always did (to draw water)
Her deliverance began with a simple request “Give me to drink”. The master took the time to start a conversation as a chance to discuss with her about religion.
God has a strange way of beginning our deliverance. The woman being baffled by his request didn’t hesitate to remind him that the Jews had no dealing with the Samaritans.
Samaria had become a place of resort for all of the outlaws of Judea. The violators of the Jewish laws and those who had been excommunicated betook themselves for safety to Samaria.
Just because some people have no dealing with you that does not stop the Master from talking with you. Jesus knew she came to the well for water but he had something better for her. She came for well water but he had living water for her.
Now that he has her looking and wanting what she needed, now he was ready to deal with what she had. He says to her after she so eagerly says to him sir give me this water that I thirst not.…
He swift the whole conversation from living water to “Go call thy husband and come hither.” In order for deliverance to take place it requires our participation.
… I have no husband. Jesus said unto her, Thou hast well said I have no husbands; and he whom thou now hast is not thy husband; in that saidst thou truly.
True deliverance when Jesus tells the truth about us and we stay.
In deliverance there must be accountability and participation
Jesus revealed her truth, her history, her wounds and instead of running from accountability, she participated.
This woman came bound by shame, rejection, broken relationship, and spiritual confusion. She had learned how to survive-drawing water at noon, avoiding eyes, numbing pain and the whispering of the community.
Although she avoided everybody else, the master did not avoid her instead he met her right where she was.
He exposed her past without condemning her.
He named her sin without shaming her
He offered living water instead of temporary relief.
Her encounter with the master he met her were she was with what she did not know that she needed. When he named her sin the conversation shifts again
Living water to Go call thy husband
Go call thy husband served two purposes: (she would know he was christ, and it got her to see that she was a sinner)
Go call thy husband to worship
After they talked about worship, she makes another confessions “ I know the messiah is coming” When Jesus said “I speak unto thee am he” something broke on the inside. The chains were not physical but they fell anyway.
We have come her tonight bond by some stuff and we need the master to speak unto us so that the chains can break.
Church take note of the action of the disciples as they walked upon this meeting. “They said nothing. They could have been like Latimore and said she a bad risk why you taking a chance on her.
After the chains break look at what she did.
2. She left her water-pot
The water pot symbolized the various things in life which she had used in and effort to satisfy her deepest longings. The water pot was necessary before the encounter with Jesus because it represented :
Survival, routine, dependency, old patterns, habits, identity, labels, old reasoning for returning, old expectations of who she thought she had to be.
it was her battle, it was grief, shame, doubt, fear, avoidance, relationship, trauma (childhood and adult) emotional abuse, physical abuse, addictions, habits, generational cruses.
In their dialogue Jesus mention true worship, They that worship him must worship him in spirit and truth.
Real worship is a vehicle to deliverance you must not only worship him when you are full but also when you are empty.
Where there is deliverance there shall also be a release.
Leaving the water pot was a act of faith. She needed faith to leave what she had become depended upon.
Hear me tonight we got to be intentional about our deliverance. Don’t just leave the water pot but stand on business. The master will still meet you where you are despite you water pot.
Deliverance requires
Ownership not excuses
Participation not passivity
Movement not maintenance
You can not move forward while clutching what God delivered you from.
She left the water-pot in faith because she needed to move to her next destination.
3. Walked in her deliverance
Standing on business
She walked like she was free
She spoke like had been changed
She moved like her encounter was real
