Before I get into the Word of the Year:
Lamentations 3:22–25 NKJV
22 Through the Lord’s mercies we are not consumed, Because His compassions fail not. 23 They are new every morning; Great is Your faithfulness. 24 “The Lord is my portion,” says my soul, “Therefore I hope in Him!” 25 The Lord is good to those who wait for Him, To the soul who seeks Him.
SEED time and Harvest:
Today’s seed will set up the harvest for you tomorrow.
I want to talk to you about a word God put on my heart for this next year
I’m giving you this word so you can study the playbook you can seek it out
You can know where we’re going as a church
You can visit there before Everybody else does
You can’t you can’t take people spiritually to places that you’ve never been
The Word of the year:
Back in May and June the Lord has been stirring on my heart a word that he had for our church
I wanted to be more intentional about where I believe the Lord is taking us
Sometimes there’s vulnerability and sharing where the Lord wants us to go
You will have to be vulnerable to the people you’re leading in order to show them where God wants us to go
In July of this year, Sarah and I were sitting in a meeting together, which other than church doesn’t happen very often
One of us is usually watching the kids actually My Whyph is usually watching the kids
And Matt Wakefield from Mercy Culture church started prophesying about the church
He said there’s gonna be a new zeal that will be placed up upon this church
And he gave us more prophecies and it was phenomenal and as he was saying that Sarah and I both agreed that the word for this next year is zeal
So what is zeal?
zeal /zēl/

noun

Enthusiastic devotion to a cause, ideal, or goal.:.Similar: synonym passion   passion
Passionate ardor(enthusiasm) in the pursuit of anything; eagerness in favor of a person or cause; ardent and active interest; engagedness; enthusiasm; fervor.
The Synopsis of this complex idea as it pertains to us for this year is:
Zeal is when God’s passions become our own
Isaiah 9:6–7 NKJV
6 For unto us a Child is born, Unto us a Son is given; And the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. 7 Of the increase of His government and peace There will be no end, Upon the throne of David and over His kingdom, To order it and establish it with judgment and justice From that time forward, even forever. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this.
The Hebrew root word for Zeal is:
kaw-naw
to envy, be jealous, be envious, be zealous
In the context of Isaiah 9
It means divine commitment
God is divinely and supernaturally committed to fulfilling his promises in your life
God’s passionate commitment to fulfill his promises
He’s passionate about his promises are you?
He’s more passionate about fulfilling his promises then you are about receiving them
He’s Zealous for You it’s time we be zealous for Him
Jesus’s Zeal:
John 2:11–16 NKJV
11 This beginning of signs Jesus did in Cana of Galilee, and manifested His glory; and His disciples believed in Him. 12 After this He went down to Capernaum, He, His mother, His brothers, and His disciples; and they did not stay there many days. 13 Now the Passover of the Jews was at hand, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. 14 And He found in the temple those who sold oxen and sheep and doves, and the money changers doing business. 15 When He had made a whip of cords, He drove them all out of the temple, with the sheep and the oxen, and poured out the changers’ money and overturned the tables. 16 And He said to those who sold doves, “Take these things away! Do not make My Father’s house a house of merchandise!”
This was not simply an event it was a miracle
When I picture this story I always think of our church or a modern day church this happnenig
But you have to know the context in order to understand the magnitude
Let me set the scene for you:
Jerusalem has a population of about 80-100k people during the time of Jesus
During passover it was required for Jews to make the pilgrimage to offer a sacrifice
In a town people 80-100K people
Over 2 million people show up to offer sacrifices
When we lived in Washougal
Looks like when the motocross comes to Washougal
Or if you’ve ever been to the Pendleton round up
They add to the population of the town to and fill the grounds there
Scholars believe that around 250,000 Lambs were sacrificed during passover
Each family would offer a lamb for the holiday
Remember their specific requirements for sacrifices
If a priest deemed the sacrifice unacceptable, you had to figure something else out
Because a lot of foreigners were making the pilgrimage to Jerusalem
Not all currencies were accepted in the temple
So you had Jewish leaders exchanging money
Adding an exchange rate
Taking advantage of people
Using a holy celebration as an opportunity for extortion
This process has been taking place for hundreds of years
People in the priest have just accepted it as a way of life
They were comfortable with the hypocrisy
They got comfortable with complacency
People just saw an opportunity to capitalize on the ignorant, unconcerned and calloused to it
Rather than a need for prayer
They found a corrupt way to be profitable
In walks Jesus
A man full of the Holy Spirit
Someone that had eyes to see what the Lord saw
He recognizes something that looks more like a mall in the marketplace
Rather than a place of prayer
He saw hypocritical worship
And self exaltation
And made him burn with righteous anger
He overturns the table’s and drives everyone out of the temple
And he quotes:
Isaiah 56:7 NKJV
7 Even them I will bring to My holy mountain, And make them joyful in My house of prayer. Their burnt offerings and their sacrifices Will be accepted on My altar; For My house shall be called a house of prayer for all nations.”
He quotes scripture when he’s bringing correction, and he uses parables to draw men to the gospel
He’s calling back to the prophecy and Isaiah had spoken about the Gentiles sacrificing to the Lord
The people that were not even thought about for the Jews until the cross
The veterans memorial stadium holds about 12,000 people
Now get this picture one man driving tens of thousands of people out of the temple
Imagine yourself going in there and disrupting the entire process
To the Jews the Messiah was coming to overthrow the governments
He was there to establish the Jewish Kingdom
The way they wanted it
Instead he comes to overthrow their hearts
He comes to reset the entire process to back what it was supposed to be
A place where a man could commune with God
To change the temple from a place of activity and commotion
A place of pandemonium back to a place of prayer
He attacked a system of hypocrisy and false religion
The disciples are baffled by what they’re seeing
Probably probably a little nervous that he just pissed off everyone that they’ve been friends with for their entire lives
He interrupted the dangerous rhythm of self reliance and complacency
Psalm 69:9 NKJV
9 Because zeal for Your house has eaten me up, And the reproaches of those who reproach You have fallen on me.
They remembered back to the scriptures
Zeal for your house has eaten me up and the reproaches of those who reproach you have fallen on me
When I whipped and chasing my soul with fasting that became my reproach
Literally, David is talking about being a pariah to his family because of his relationship with God
Being an ostracized and shamed because this is you for the things of God
That word reproach:
means to express disapproval of criticism or disappointment in
Things that God disapproves of do we disapprove of
It’s easy to look into the world and see what God disapprove of
But do we disapprove the things in our own life that God disapproves of
Holiness is disapproving the things within Ourselves and changing them
So others see that difference in us
The reproach of God’s people fell upon David from a young age
1 Samuel 17:26 NKJV
26 Then David spoke to the men who stood by him, saying, “What shall be done for the man who kills this Philistine and takes away the reproach from Israel? For who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God?”
You coward, you spineless wimps, you gutless wonders, you going to let this happen to the armies of God?
I looked up to you
I thought you guys were tough
I thought you guys stood for something
I thought you were gonna show me how to lead
I thought you were going to call me out from the front
If you look at the kings of the Bible after David you constantly hear
They served God
But they left the high places for people to burn incense to other God’s
Who’s going to tear down the High places in America?
Who’s going to tear down the high places in Clark County
Cowlitz County
Multnohmah County
How are we going to overturn the high places in our cities if
WE’ve got high places Hidden in us?
When Jesus overturned the tables in the house of God
Jesus was calling God‘s people back to righteousness
He was calling God‘s people back to faithfulness
He was overturning the the spirits of religion
He was overturning the giants of complacency within the temple
Zeal is when God is dishonored you feel the pain
When God is dishonored in your family do you feel the pain
Maybe complacency, traditions, familiar spirits, and habitual behaviors dictates activity within our temples
Whatever excuse you want to add to the list that’s applicable to your situation
Or do we love the things that God loves and hate the things that God hates
Are we just our rhythms?
In our Sunday morning behaviors
Or do we see what the Holy Spirit wants to do?
Do we see our God’s heart breaks for people around us?
1 Peter 4:17 NKJV
17 For the time has come for judgment to begin at the house of God; and if it begins with us first, what will be the end of those who do not obey the gospel of God?
Zeal becomes contagious:
For revival to happen Zeal has to manifest in your life in order for it to become contagious
It starts with us, it starts with the church
It started with David
It became contagious to the men around Him
Jesus started something in the disciples that changed them from denying Him
To dying for Him
Zeal will become contagious to the people who want it around you
It’s time to Overturn the Tables of Complacency in your LIFE
Maybe maybe you have a table of lust that needs to be overturned in your life
Maybe there’s a table of comparison that needs to be overturned in your life
Maybe there’s a table of grief or pain that needs to overturned in your life
Maybe there’s a table of anger
Table of resentment
A table of comfort or table of familiarity
What needs to be overturned in your life?
Maybe there’s tables that need to overturned in your family
Rebellion
Confusion
Poverty
Sickness
Greed
witchcraft
Generational habits
What are things that need to be overturned in your life this morning
One things for certain Jesus couldn’t have done any of it without the Holy Spirit
Acts 1:8 NKJV
8 But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”
Only one way to Jesus:
John 14:6 NKJV
6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.
Romans 10:9 NKJV
9 that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.
Sinners Prayer:
Father God, I give you my life
I give you my heart, I give you my all
I repent today for my past
I thank you my sins are forgiven
I believe in Jesus and that he died on the cross and rose again
I make you the Savior and Lord of my life
I love you God
In Jesus name Amen
