How Do disciples learn to do?

Rules and Tools

We need to interpret and apply the scriptures properly.

Exegesis.

Hermeneutics.

Context.

Generically Christian. (catholicity).

Specifically based on our distinctive emphases as a brotherhood.

We need a matrix or grid to measure and judge things.

No Excuses!  It is not enough to say

“The Bible Says”

“That’s what I was taught”

“That’s my opinion.”

Flexible, consistent, Universal

Bible-What the text actually says.

History-How belief and behavior work things out in the real world.

Theology-what are the thought systems created by mixing Bible/History.

We need to ask good questions…

Bible questions

How do inspiration and authority work?

Are some parts of the Bible “truer”, than others. (No, but different parts of the have different purposes, emphases, and relevance for the broader Christian Community?

How does the OT (law) relate to the NT (grace)? (Those distinctions are interpretive and external rather than arising from actual study of the text.)

How do we discern the purpose of Christ in all parts of the Bible? (Work, Study, Work, Prayer, Reading, Work.)

Historical questions

What impact has the Church/Bible had on culture and society? And vice versa?

How have specific Biblical positions formed or deformed the Church?

In what ways has the “definition” of Christian changed with the emergence of various levels of literacy throughout history?

Theological questions

Is the Bible the basis for a theological position, an excuse for a theological position, or a crutch for a theological position?

How have various church bodies transferred Biblical thinking into Systems of Beliefs

How have other human intellectual movements (science/philosophy) impacted theology?

Benchmarks for disciples

Each of our lessons over the next several weeks will look at a single benchmark for discipleship.
