Stepping Into the Promised Land: Faith Over Fear

Bible Passage: Joshua 3:1-17

In Joshua 3:1-17, God commands the Israelites to cross the Jordan River, a significant act of faith that leads them into the Promised Land. The text is tailored to teach us their reliance on God's guidance and power as they step into a new chapter of their covenant journey.
This passage teaches us that faith often requires us to step into the unknown and confront our fears. Just as the Israelites faced the raging Jordan River, we too face challenges that can seem insurmountable. By trusting in God's presence and obedience to His Word, we can overcome obstacles and embrace the promises He has laid out for us.
The sermon will illustrate how faith requires action and trust in God's direction, even when circumstances appear dire. It emphasizes the importance of obedience to God's commands and the testimony that it builds among His people.
How this passage could point to Christ: This passage foreshadows Christ as the ultimate guide through the waters of life. Just as the Israelites were led into the Promised Land by following the ark of the covenant, believers are led by Christ, who offers forgiveness and the promise of eternal life through faith.
Big Idea: Faith in God allows us to overcome challenges and enter into His promises, demonstrating that He is with us even in our most daunting moments.
Recommended Study: As you prepare this sermon, consider exploring the geographical and historical context of the Jordan River crossing. Logos can provide insights into the significance of water crossings in biblical narratives, as well as examining the symbolism of the Ark of the Covenant in this event. Delve into commentaries that discuss the theological implications of stepping into new seasons of life through faith.

1. Prepare Through Consecration

Joshua 3:1-5
Perhaps you can begin by emphasizing the significance of preparation and sanctification before entering into God's promises. The Israelites were instructed to consecrate themselves before crossing the Jordan. You could discuss how, in our lives, preparation through prayer, consecration, and readiness to follow God's guidance is crucial in facing new challenges. Reflect on how Christ calls us to prepare through faith and repentance as we follow Him into the promises of God.

What does my Consecration look like

2. Proceed with God's Presence

Joshua 3:6-8
Notice how Joshua demonstrates his trusts in God's command to cross the Jordan. Joshua instructs the priests to carry the Ark of the Covenant, symbolizing God's presence. In our lives Jesus, our ultimate leader, guides us through uncertain paths and we are called to trust Him and move forward, even when the path seems unclear. This requires faith in action as we step out following Christ's lead.

3. Press On in Obedience

Joshua 3:9-13
Look at the Joshua instructions gives
faith was required to step into the river before it was divided. This demonstrates a faith that acts even before seeing the outcome.
Consider drawing parallels to how Christ asks us to step out in faith, trusting that He will provide and make a way. Obedience to God's Word often requires us to step into uncertainty, believing in His power to accomplish what He has promised.

4. Persevere in Faith

Joshua 3:14-17
You could conclude by reflecting on the miraculous crossing itself, where God's power was revealed as the waters stopped and the Israelites crossed on dry ground. Maybe talk about how, like the Israelites, we can experience God's faithfulness and power when we trust and follow Him. This points towards Christ, who secured our eternal crossing from death to life. Emphasize the call to trust in Christ's completed work and His presence with us through life's challenges and transitions.
