Broken made Whole

The Value of What’s Been Lost
Jesus tells three parables in Luke 15, all sparked by one accusation:
Luke 15:2 NASB95
2 Both the Pharisees and the scribes began to grumble, saying, “This man receives sinners and eats with them.”
In response, Jesus doesn’t argue. He tells stories.
This morning we are looking at the parable, a lost coin.
The parable of the lost coin is a story about something broken, overlooked, and seemingly insignificant, yet deeply valuable.
Some of us know what it feels like to be:
Dropped
Forgotten
Swept aside
Lying in the dark
Jesus says: That’s exactly who I came for.
Luke 15:8–10 NASB95
8 “Or what woman, if she has ten silver coins and loses one coin, does not light a lamp and sweep the house and search carefully until she finds it? 9 “When she has found it, she calls together her friends and neighbors, saying, ‘Rejoice with me, for I have found the coin which I had lost!’ 10 “In the same way, I tell you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.”

I. Lost Doesn’t Mean Worthless

Luke 15:8 NASB95
8 “Or what woman, if she has ten silver coins and loses one
A silver coin refers to a drachma which was roughly a day’s wage. But for many women in Jesus’ time, these coins were more than money—they were often part of a wedding gift or dowry, sometimes worn as a headband.
This coin wasn’t just currency. It carried identity, security, and story.
Yet it’s lost… not because it rebelled, not because it wandered— but because it was dropped.
We might think of this coin as dropping a penny, a nickel, a dime, or a quarter, but it is more than just an ordinary coin, think of it as something that you have been given that hold sentimental value.
Some people don’t feel lost because of rebellion. They feel lost or broken because of:
Trauma - story of movie Soul on Fire
Abuse - this can be sexual, mental, physical or emotional
Divorce - they feel shunned by others and especially a church
Depression - people face this in many different ways
Failure - financial, job, life, arrested
Someone else’s sin
Jesus reminds us: Being lost never reduces your value.
Luke 12:28 NASB95
28 “But if God so clothes the grass in the field, which is alive today and tomorrow is thrown into the furnace, how much more will He clothe you? You men of little faith!
You are not worthless because you’re wounded. You are not disposable because you’re damaged. You are still The One.

II. The Light Is Turned On for the Lost

Luke 15:8 NASB95
8 does not light a lamp
The woman lost her valuable, it is dark so she turns the lights on to find it.
In a dark, dirt-floor home, a lost coin would be nearly impossible to find without light.
So the woman creates light.
This is a picture of God’s initiative.
God does not wait for lost people to find their way. He turns on the light.
Jesus is that light.
John 8:12 NASB95
12 Then Jesus again spoke to them, saying, “I am the Light of the world; he who follows Me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the Light of life.”
Jesus
He steps into dark places
He enters broken homes
He walks into shame-filled rooms
He shines where others avoid
If you feel exposed by God’s light, remember: Light isn’t meant to shame you—it’s meant to find you.
The law was given in the Old Testament to help us see our need for salvation, our need for a Savior.

III. God Searches Carefully and Relentlessly

Luke 15:8 NASB95
8 sweep the house and search carefully until she finds it?
She doesn’t glance around casually. She searches carefully and until she finds it.
This is not passive grace. This is persistent love.
God doesn’t give up when things get messy. He doesn’t stop searching because it’s inconvenient.
Some of us were found under layers of dust:
Addictions
Regret
Religious burnout
Years away from church
Feeling like a misfit even among believers
Yet God keeps sweeping.
Not violently. Not angrily. But intentionally.
Grace is thorough.
2 Corinthians 12:9 NASB95
9 And He has said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for power is perfected in weakness.” Most gladly, therefore, I will rather boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may dwell in me.

IV. Found Means Restored, Not Just Retrieved

Luke 15:9 NASB95
9 “When she has found it, she calls together her friends and neighbors, saying, ‘Rejoice with me, for I have found the coin which I had lost!’
Notice something powerful: The coin is found, but the story doesn’t end there.
There is restoration and celebration.
The coin isn’t scolded. It isn’t repaired in private. It is rejoiced over publicly.
When God finds you:
He doesn’t tolerate you—He celebrates you
He doesn’t shame you—He restores you
He doesn’t just rescue you—He makes you whole

V. Heaven Rejoices Over One

Luke 15:10 NASB95
10 “In the same way, I tell you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.”
Heaven throws a party for one.
Not a crowd. Not a perfect person. Not the religious elite.
One broken, found soul.
Your repentance matters. Your return matters. Your healing matters.
You are not a statistic. You are not an afterthought. You are The One heaven celebrates.
Conclusion: Broken Made Whole
A coin doesn’t fix itself. It allows itself to be found.
That’s grace.
Some of you walked in today feeling:
Dropped
Cracked
Invisible
Spiritually unfinished
“You are not lost beyond finding. You are not broken beyond healing. You are not forgotten.”
In Christ, the broken are made whole.
Invitation / Response
To the lost: Let Him find you.
To the found: Rejoice.
To the church: Search like He searches.

Because this is a place where:

Outsiders are welcomed
Misfits belong
Black sheep are cherished
Broken people are made whole
