Holy Brethren

V 1
this chapter is speaking to someone who is saved
this chapter is speaking to someone who thinks they are saved
in the congregation there are wheat and tares
read Matt 13 24-30
these tares are people in the congrigation who are not saved
the enemy has placed them there to disrupt
but prior to this Jesus spoke another parable of the 4 soils
V 3-8
the gospel goes out to different kinds of people
the rocky soil people these have a emotional response to the gospel and it is like seeds sown onto dirt that is very shallow
maybe 1/4 of an inch deep there is enough soil to sprout these seeds but not enough to alow the root to grow deep. so the new plant is scorched in the hot sun very quickly
we have all seen people like this for a while they looked saved but eventually fall away and they never pass through a church door again
some even become church leaders
then one day they completely go back into the world
1 John 2:19–20 LSB
They went out from us, but they were not really of us; for if they were of us, they would have remained with us; but they went out, so that it would be manifested that they all are not of us. But you have an anointing from the Holy One, and you all know.
last week we looked at God and who He saves . because of Hebrews 3 6 and the IF that is there
This IF is a test to see if we are of the faith
we read this in the Complete Jewish Bible
Romans 8:29–30 CJB
because those whom he knew in advance, he also determined in advance would be conformed to the pattern of his Son, so that he might be the firstborn among many brothers; and those whom he thus determined in advance, he also called; and those whom he called, he also caused to be considered righteous; and those whom he caused to be considered righteous he also glorified!
so from before time began it has been determined who will be with Him in glory
this chapter is speaking to those who are saved to give them assurance and what to look for
it is also speaking to those who are unsaved but think they are
and also those who are on the verge of being saved
and to give encouragement to those who are struggling
read V 6-19

Therefore

V 7
Just as the Holy Spirit says
Psalm 95 7
The Holy Spirit talks to us through all of the scriptures
Says present time not long ago
God speaks to us in all of His scriptures
Do you want to hear from God? read His word
do you want to hear from God audibly Read it out loud
God has warned the Israelite people not to have a hard heart
He is also telling those today the same thing
don’t put a wedge between you and God
this is a warning to the verse 6
to those who are not saved
if we hold fast our confidence and the boast of our hope.
as a believer we will do this. the Grace of god will hold us
John 6:37–40 LSB
“All that the Father gives Me will come to Me, and the one who comes to Me I will never cast out. “For I have come down from heaven, not to do My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me. “Now this is the will of Him who sent Me, that of all that He has given Me I lose nothing, but raise it up on the last day. “For this is the will of My Father, that everyone who sees the Son and believes in Him will have eternal life, and I Myself will raise him up on the last day.”
John 17:9–11 LSB
“I ask on their behalf; I do not ask on behalf of the world but of those whom You have given Me; for they are Yours; and all things that are Mine are Yours, and Yours are Mine; and I have been glorified in them. “And I am no longer in the world; and yet they themselves are in the world, and I come to You. Holy Father, keep them in Your name, the name which You have given Me, that they may be one even as We are.
We have been prayed for by Jesus that we would be Kept
we have been promised that all of the children of God will be raised up in the resurrection
God is the one guarding our souls
the Holy Spirit has sealed us
Ephesians 1:13–14 LSB
In Him, you also, after listening to the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation—having also believed, you were sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit of promise, who is given as a pledge of our inheritance, unto the redemption of God’s own possession, to the praise of His glory.
The Holy Spirit dwells in us
we have been sealed with a seal that we cant even break
2 Corinthians 1:22 LSB
who also sealed us and gave the pledge of the Spirit in our hearts.
V 12 unbelieving heart
the plea is for them to believe the gospel
V 19 unbelief
in verse 14 we come to another

IF

V 14
We have become partakers in the past
holding fast from the beginning
the assurance is firm to the end
Heb 11 1 faith is this assurance
we are now in Christ
Galatians 3:26–29 LSB
For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus. For all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free man, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. And if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s seed, heirs according to promise.
we have been Identified with Christ
we are called sons of God
“Clothes makes the man”
we have new clothes / we have put on Christ
we are a new creation
we are now partakers in all that Christ is and gives
and that is eternal life
and from the beginning we have held fast to this promise and we will till the end
let’s change this If to Since
this verse is for assurance for believers as he is speaking to unbelievers
He is displaying to unbelievers what a believer looks like
we have faults, we sin, but our confidence in Jesus to take us home with Him does not waver
because he holds us tight
because we have been sealed
because we have been made a child of God
