Titus 2:1–5 ESV
But as for you, teach what accords with sound doctrine. Older men are to be sober-minded, dignified, self-controlled, sound in faith, in love, and in steadfastness. Older women likewise are to be reverent in behavior, not slanderers or slaves to much wine. They are to teach what is good, and so train the young women to love their husbands and children, to be self-controlled, pure, working at home, kind, and submissive to their own husbands, that the word of God may not be reviled.
Titus 2:6–10 ESV
Likewise, urge the younger men to be self-controlled. Show yourself in all respects to be a model of good works, and in your teaching show integrity, dignity, and sound speech that cannot be condemned, so that an opponent may be put to shame, having nothing evil to say about us. Bondservants are to be submissive to their own masters in everything; they are to be well-pleasing, not argumentative, not pilfering, but showing all good faith, so that in everything they may adorn the doctrine of God our Savior.
Titus 2:11–14 ESV
For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people, training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age, waiting for our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, who gave himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness and to purify for himself a people for his own possession who are zealous for good works.
Titus 2:15 ESV
Declare these things; exhort and rebuke with all authority. Let no one disregard you.

Live Godly Lives

Titus 2:11–14 ESV
For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people, training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age, waiting for our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, who gave himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness and to purify for himself a people for his own possession who are zealous for good works.
Grace of God has appeared
appeared: related to term epiphany
penetrated our moral and spiritual darkness
Bringing salvation for all people
grace came to rescue man from the curse of God upon sin
Training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions
Ungodliness is impiety and wickedness
inordinate sexual desire
alcohol / drug mania
yearning for material possessions
self-assertiveness (quarrelsome, lust to dominate)
Summary: inordinate longing for pleasure, power and possessions
idolatry plus immortality
Grace does not suddenly and forcefully act
e.g. forcing masters to free their slaves
But gradually convicts
e.g. causes masters to see that the encroachment upon the liberty of their fellows is a great wrong
Grace trains by teaching, chastening, counselling comforting, encouraging, admonishing, guiding, convicting, reward, restraining, etc
Live self-controlled, upright and godly lives
To oneself: Self-control
To neighbour: Fairness - honesty, justice, integrity
To God: Devotion
Waiting for our blessed hope ...
blessed hope - imparts bliss, happiness, delight and glory
Immovable foundation
glorious author
wonderful object - everlasting life, salvation, glory
precious effects - endurance, boldness of speech, and purification of life
everlasting character (abide in love - 1 Cor 13:13)
the appearing of the glory of our great God and Saviour Jesus Christ
God and Saviour - affirmation of diety
Jesus Christ
Language notes:
one article [of our] preceeds two nouns [God and Saviour], bridged by conjunction - same person
2 Peter 1:11 “of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.”
if the article [of our] repeated between nouns - two persons
in the New Testament, the term epiphany (appearing) also has never been used with respect to more than one Person
Romans 9:5 “To them belong the patriarchs, and from their race, according to the flesh, is the Christ, who is God over all, blessed forever. Amen.”
Colossians 1:15-20 - a full declaration of diety, e.g. “all things were created through him”
Colossians 2:9 “For in him the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily,”
who gave himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness
1 Timothy 2:6 “who gave himself as a ransom for all, which is the testimony given at the proper time.”
