Romans 2:17-29 - What Really Matters

従順のない知識の矛盾

配偶者に「私は結婚記念日とあなたの好きな色を覚えたから、あなたは私に借りがある」と言うことがどれほどばかげているか考えてみてください。知識と行動だけに基づき、心のつながりや愛のない関係は、すでに死んでいます。しかし、これが多くの人が神様に近づく方法です。聖書の知識と教会の奉仕の点数をつけ、神様が報いてくれることを期待しながら、本当の交わりや心のつながりを持っていません。

心の問題

神様との関係は一つのことに依存しています:イエス・キリストへの信仰を通して、聖霊によってあなたの心が変えられることです。これがなければ、しるしは空しいです。これがなければ、神様の完全さの基準を満たす方法はありません。これがなければ、来るべき裁きから逃れる道はありません。

あなたは知識や奉仕で神様の恵みを買うことはできません。しかし、神様はイエス様への信仰を通してそれを無償で与えてくださいます。その関係の中で、変えられた心に根ざして、神様についてもっと学び、神様に仕える者となることは、神様の承認を得ようとする試みではなく、愛の表現となります。

本当に大切なのは、神様だけが与えることができるものを神様から受け取ることです:キリストへの信仰を通して新しい心を受けることです。この土台なしには、他のすべては空しいものです。

Have you ever felt like you deserve better treatment than what you're receiving? Perhaps at work, at home, or in other relationships? Most of us can relate to this feeling. But here's a more important question: Do you ever feel like God isn't treating you well enough? That you deserve more from Him because of what you know about the Bible or how hard you serve at church?

This mindset reveals a dangerous tendency—thinking that our knowledge or service obligates God to bless us. We can fall into believing that the more Scripture we memorize or the longer we serve, the more God owes us. This is exactly the attitude Paul confronts in Romans 2:17-29.

The Contradiction of Knowledge Without Obedience

Paul addresses religious people who relied on their status as God's chosen people and their knowledge of Scripture. They saw themselves as "guides to the blind" and "teachers of the foolish"—spiritually superior because of what they knew. They had convinced themselves that God was pleased with them no matter what.

But Jesus called these same religious leaders "blind guides." The problem wasn't their knowledge—knowing God and His will is important. The problem was the contradiction between what they knew and how they lived. They taught against stealing but cheated on their taxes. They preached against adultery but committed it themselves. They condemned idolatry but exploited religious practices for personal gain.

Paul's point is sharp: if you know so much and teach everyone else, why don't you at least teach yourself? It's easier to give advice than to follow it. When our lives contradict what we claim to believe, knowledge becomes hypocrisy. We can learn to play the religious game—saying the right words when people are watching, appearing spiritual while living completely differently in private. But this kind of performance-based faith leads nowhere.

James warns that teachers will be judged with greater strictness. True teaching isn't just about telling others what to do; it's about showing them through our own lives.

The Emptiness of Signs Without Heart Change

Paul then addresses circumcision—the physical sign that marked Jews as God's covenant people. But this sign had become a source of pride, a way of saying, "I'm good with God because I have the mark." Paul demolishes this thinking: if you have the sign but don't obey, the sign is meaningless. A sign is supposed to point to something deeper.

The same principle applies to the signs given to believers today: baptism and communion. Baptism symbolizes dying with Christ and rising to new life—a heart transformed by the Holy Spirit. Without that internal work, baptism is just getting wet. Communion represents Christ's body and blood given for us, strengthening our faith as we remember His sacrifice. Without a relationship with Jesus, it's just crackers and juice.

These signs point to what truly matters: a heart changed by the Spirit. Even in the Old Testament, God promised to "circumcise your heart" so you would love Him completely. Signs without heart transformation are empty rituals.

What God Really Requires

James 2:10 reminds us that keeping the whole law but failing at one point makes us guilty of breaking all of it. Perfect obedience is impossible for us. Yet perfection is God's standard. This reality should lead us to hopelessness—except for one thing. Jesus said, "This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent" (John 6:29). The righteousness that saves us doesn't come from our efforts; it comes from heaven through faith in Christ.

Consider how absurd it would be to tell your spouse, "You owe me because I remembered our anniversary and your favorite color." A relationship based only on knowledge and actions, without heart connection or love, is already dead. Yet this is how many people approach God—keeping score of Bible knowledge and church service, expecting God to reward them while maintaining no real fellowship or heart connection.

The Heart of the Matter

Your relationship with God depends on one thing: your heart being changed by the Holy Spirit through faith in Jesus Christ. Without this, signs are empty. Without this, there's no way to meet God's standard of perfection. Without this, there's no escape from coming judgment.

You cannot buy God's favor with knowledge or service. However, He gives it freely through faith in Jesus. Within that relationship—rooted in a transformed heart—learning more about God and serving Him become expressions of love rather than attempts to earn His approval.

What really matters is receiving from God what only He can give: a new heart through faith in Christ. Everything else, without this foundation, is empty.
