2nd of 14 as we journey through the Gospel of Mark and unfold The Story that Changes Everything
Introduction
There is a story often told among sailors and leaders—a story about authority, perspective, and the need to respond wisely.
A US Navy battleship was making its way through dense fog one night. Suddenly, the lookout reported a light directly ahead. The captain, confident in his rank and the power of his ship, ordered the approaching vessel to change course. The reply came back: “You change your course.” The captain, now irritated, sent another message: “I am a captain in the United States Navy. Change your course!” The answer was simple and humbling: “I am a lighthouse. Your call.”
In that moment, the captain realized that no matter how much authority he thought he had, there are greater authorities that cannot be moved or negotiated. The only safe response was to adjust his course.
This story is more than a clever anecdote—it’s a powerful illustration of what we encounter in Mark 1:14–28. Jesus arrives proclaiming the Kingdom of God, calling His disciples, and demonstrating authority that cannot be ignored or bargained with. His authority is not just another voice among many; it is the unshakeable, immovable reality that demands a response.
Just as the battleship had to yield to the lighthouse, we are called to recognize and submit to the authority of Jesus. His arrival marks a turning point in history and in our lives. The Kingdom of God has come near, and the only safe response is to adjust our course—to repent, to follow, and to trust in His power to transform and deliver us.
Today, as we explore Mark’s account, consider how we respond to the authority of Christ. Will we insist on our own way, or will we yield to the One whose authority brings freedom, healing, and hope?
Mark 1:14–28 NIV
14 After John was put in prison, Jesus went into Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God. 15 “The time has come,” he said. “The kingdom of God has come near. Repent and believe the good news!” 16 As Jesus walked beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. 17 “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.” 18 At once they left their nets and followed him. 19 When he had gone a little farther, he saw James son of Zebedee and his brother John in a boat, preparing their nets. 20 Without delay he called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men and followed him. 21 They went to Capernaum, and when the Sabbath came, Jesus went into the synagogue and began to teach. 22 The people were amazed at his teaching, because he taught them as one who had authority, not as the teachers of the law. 23 Just then a man in their synagogue who was possessed by an impure spirit cried out, 24 “What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God!” 25 “Be quiet!” said Jesus sternly. “Come out of him!” 26 The impure spirit shook the man violently and came out of him with a shriek. 27 The people were all so amazed that they asked each other, “What is this? A new teaching—and with authority! He even gives orders to impure spirits and they obey him.” 28 News about him spread quickly over the whole region of Galilee.
Announcing the Arrival (vv 14-15) Recognize the Moment Repent and Align Freedom and Peace
Transition to First Point
As we’ve just read in Mark, the arrival of Jesus is not just another event in history—it’s the moment when God’s Kingdom breaks into our world with unshakeable authority. Just as the captain in our story had to recognize the immovable reality of the lighthouse, we are invited to recognize the arrival of a far greater authority: the reign of God through Jesus Christ.
Announcing the Arrival.
Jesus begins His ministry by proclaiming, “The time has come. The kingdom of God has come near. Repent and believe the good news!”
It is more than an announcement—it’s an invitation.
God’s sovereign reign is breaking into our world, and Jesus calls everyone to turn away from the old way of life and embrace a new reality where God is in control.
Application:
Recognize this momentous event in your own life.
Repent and align yourself under Jesus’ lordship.
Experience the freedom and peace that come from living under the authority of the King.
Transition to Second Point
Jesus’ proclamation is a call to action—a call to adjust our course and embrace the new reality of God’s reign. But He doesn’t stop there. He invites us to follow Him, to become part of His mission.
We see Him Calling the Disciples in our reading today...
Calling the Disciples (vv 16-20) Respond to His Call Trust His Authority Mundane is Meaningful
Jesus calls Simon, Andrew, James, and John to follow Him. Their immediate response—leaving everything behind—shows the radical effect of Jesus’ authority and the urgency of His call. The authority of Christ transforms ordinary lives and gives them purpose.
Application:
Reflect on your own response to Jesus’ call.
Trust in His authority over your life.
Commit to His service, knowing that even the mundane becomes meaningful as He leads you into His divine mission.
Transition to Third Point
The call of the disciples is a powerful reminder that Jesus’ authority is not just about words—it’s about transformation. He doesn’t just invite us to follow; He empowers us to live differently. And He demonstrates that authority in dramatic ways.
In our scripture today we see Cleansing with Command...
Cleansing with Command (vv 21-28) Hope: Confront & Overcome Trust: Deliverance & Victory Submit: Freedom & Change
In the synagogue, Jesus teaches with authority and casts out an unclean spirit. This act demonstrates His power over spiritual forces and confirms His identity as the Messiah. No force is too strong for His authority.
Application:
Find hope in Jesus’ power to confront and overcome evil in your life today.
Trust in His ability to bring deliverance and victory over spiritual and personal struggles.
Submit to His authority and experience true freedom and transformation/change.

THE STORY THAT CHANGES EVERYTHING!

Conclusion
The arrival of God’s Kingdom through Jesus heralds a transformative authority that changes everything. We are invited to live under His lordship, where even the most resistant forces must obey. Consider how Jesus’ authority is not just historical but present and active in your life today. Yield to Him, and let His power bring change, healing, and hope.
Closing Illustration: The Lighthouse in the Storm
Imagine a ship caught in a violent storm at sea. The waves are crashing, the wind is howling, and the crew is struggling to keep the vessel afloat. In the midst of the chaos, a lighthouse stands firm on the shore, its beam cutting through the darkness. The captain knows that the only way to safety is to trust the light and steer toward it, even when the storm rages and visibility is poor.
The lighthouse doesn’t remove the storm, but its unwavering presence and authority over the darkness guide the ship to safety. The crew must respond—they must turn the wheel, adjust their course, and follow the light’s direction. Their willingness to trust and act on the lighthouse’s guidance transforms their situation from peril to hope.
In the same way, Jesus’ arrival and authority are like the lighthouse in our storms. He calls us to respond, to trust His guidance, and to follow Him—even when life feels chaotic or uncertain. His authority doesn’t always remove the storms, but it brings light, direction, and the promise of transformation. When we submit to His authority, we find true freedom and peace, just as the ship finds safe harbor by following the light.
Challenge: As you leave today, consider:
Where do you need to trust the authority of Christ in your life?
What storms are you facing, and how can you respond to His call and guidance?
Let Jesus be your lighthouse—His authority is unshakeable, and His invitation is for you to experience freedom, healing, and hope.
HIS AUTHORITY IS THE STORY THAT CHANGES EVERYTHING!
