Gospel of Mark is The First Gospel written
Written Between 64-68 ad
The Gospel of Mark is the shortest Gospel about 11,000 words
661 Verses
The Gospel of Mark is written by Mark a disciple of Paul and Peter, Mark is primarily the account of Peter
Acts 12:12 BSB
And when he had realized this, he went to the house of Mary the mother of John, also called Mark, where many people had gathered together and were praying.
Where Peter is arrested and he is released by angles in Acts 12 he goes to Marks mothers house where the believers are gathered
Acts 12:25 BSB
When Barnabas and Saul had fulfilled their mission to Jerusalem, they returned, bringing with them John, also called Mark.
He eventually travels with Paul and Barnabas
Acts 13:13 BSB
After setting sail from Paphos, Paul and his companions came to Perga in Pamphylia, where John left them to return to Jerusalem.
After a while Mark Goes Back to Jerusalem leaving Paul and Barnabas
Acts 15:37–39 BSB
Barnabas wanted to take John, also called Mark. But Paul thought it best not to take him, because he had deserted them in Pamphylia and had not accompanied them in the work. Their disagreement was so sharp that they parted company. Barnabas took Mark and sailed for Cyprus,
After Mark leaves them, Barnabas wants to take him with him and Paul after the Jerusalem Council, but Paul doesn't want to because he left them
Acts 15:39 BSB
Their disagreement was so sharp that they parted company. Barnabas took Mark and sailed for Cyprus,
This caused such a big rift between Barnabas and Paul that they split and Paul ends us taking Silas and Barnabas Mark
But by the time Paul is writing to the Colossians and to Philemon about 10 years later Mark is back in Good relationship with Paul ( Teachable Moment )
Colossians 4:10 BSB
My fellow prisoner Aristarchus sends you greetings, as does Mark the cousin of Barnabas. You have already received instructions about him: If he comes to you, welcome him.
Philemon 24 BSB
as do Mark, Aristarchus, Demas, and Luke, my fellow workers.
and about 3-5 years later when Paul writes Timothy, he says mark is very useful to him,
Side note: This lets us know that Paul was a Doer, the same way he wrote to Philemon to accept back Onesimus, he accepts back Mark
2 Timothy 4:11 BSB
Only Luke is with me. Get Mark and bring him with you, because he is useful to me in the ministry.
Here is along with the time in Acts when Mark is in Rome with Peter and it is believed the Gospel of Mark is written 1 Peter 5:13
1 Peter 5:13 BSB
The church in Babylon, chosen together with you, sends you greetings, as does my son Mark.
Mark goes through ups and downs but is used to write this Gospel after being influenced by the two greatest evangelist of the time
Mark is a Hebrew but he is witting to Greeks.
As we just saw Mark is a Hebrew man, a Hebraic Jew
Hebraic Jew understand a Different way
The Don’t need much reasoning from things other than scripture and events
Greeks on the other hand has a culture of philosophy, deep abstract thought
You have two different sets of Jews in the time of Christ and the apostles because of the Greeks coming in as we talked about week 1, in Maccabees.
You have Hebraic Jews and Hellenistic Jews Acts 6:1
Acts 6:1 BSB
In those days when the disciples were increasing in number, the Grecian Jews among them began to grumble against the Hebraic Jews because their widows were being overlooked in the daily distribution of food.
Paul for example is a Hellenistic or Grecian Jew, you can tell by the way that he writes his letters, you have to think to read Paul
James and Peter are Hebraic Jews, they just give very plain instruction
The Gospel of John is written by John a Hellenistic Jew, we can tell this because his Gospel is very abstract and spiritual, starting with the prologue, its written primarily for Gentiles, John spent the end of his life ministering to the churches in Asia Minor
The Gospel of Matthew is written by a Hebraic Jew to Hebraic Jews that's why its short on the Metaphysics and speculation and focus Mostly on teachings and narrative
The Gospel of Mark is unique in the sense that it is written by a Hebraic Jews to a Greek audience,
So Mark has some elements of both, the gospel is not extremely deep in thought, but he does pull on another element of the Greeks that the Hebrews somewhat share, a focus on action, doing. He shows through the actions of the Messiah that he is who he says he is. The Greeks respect action, the respect a man on the move who does things.
That's why the Greek word ev-theh-oss is used 41 times in the gospel of Mark, it translates loosely to immediately
This is why Mark starts his Gospel with The Beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God, he wants to immediately get to the point for which he is writing, Greeks don’t care about Birth stories they want to see power and action and, in his Gospel Mark, gives them just that. Mark 1:1
Mark 1:1 BSB
This is the beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.
I also want you to understand this 1st verse is more than likely why Mark is eventually killed,
In Rome the last Emperor or Augustus is King and God and his son or next in line was the Son of God, in the time of Christ its was Tiberius and by the time Mark was writing his Gospel it was Nero, one of the evilest empowers in history to the believers /
So Mark just writing that Jesus was the Son of God was a capital offense because only the emperor could be called the Son of God, by writing down this statement especially during the time of Nero Mark knew what his likely fate would be, but he was willing to face it so that the Gospel could be proclaimed.
This is why the story of the coin of ceaser is so powerful Mark 12:13-17
Mark 12:13–17 BSB
Later, they sent some of the Pharisees and Herodians to catch Jesus in His words. “Teacher,” they said, “we know that You are honest and seek favor from no one. Indeed, You are impartial and teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar or not? Should we pay them or not?” But Jesus saw through their hypocrisy and said, “Why are you testing Me? Bring Me a denarius to inspect.” So they brought it, and He asked them, “Whose image is this? And whose inscription?” “Caesar’s,” they answered. Then Jesus told them, “Give to Caesar what is Caesar’s, and to God what is God’s.” And they marveled at Him.
He here show us an example of the coins of the Romans which had the face of the emperor on the front with the inscription son of God and the Roman high priest on the back.
And today in our political climate we should see Christ in the same way, saying that Jesus is the Son of God is not only a declaration of his divininty in heaven, but his rulership on earth. No matter who the president is, no matter the political climate, no matter what side you support this statement trumps, no pun intended all of the political statements you can make, at the end of the day Jesus Christ is the Son of God, he has all power, he is always in control, he raises up kings and tears them down, he send the rain on the just and the unjust, he kills and he makes alive, he the Lord does all these thing.
Not only does the Gospel of Mark declare Jesus to be God in the Sense that he is Ruler over earth, but that he is Yahweh, he is the pre excitant God of Israel.
in the next verse he says Mark 1:2-3
Mark 1:2–3 BSB
As it is written in Isaiah the prophet: “Behold, I will send My messenger ahead of You, who will prepare Your way.” “A voice of one calling in the wilderness, ‘Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for Him.’ ”
This verse comes from
Isaiah 40:3 BSB
A voice of one calling: “Prepare the way for the LORD in the wilderness; make a straight highway for our God in the desert.
And Malachi 3:1
Malachi 3:1 BSB
“Behold, I will send My messenger, who will prepare the way before Me. Then the Lord whom you seek will suddenly come to His temple—the Messenger of the covenant, in whom you delight—see, He is coming,” says the LORD of Hosts.
Here he declares Jesus to be that Yahweh that the way was prepared for, in the Hebrew the word there for Lord is Yahweh the proper name for the God of Israel.
We here get into a bit of a deep topic, the trinity.
When we say Jesus is God, we do not mean that he is the father, but that he has the same nature as the father Hebrews 1:3
Hebrews 1:3 BSB
The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of His nature, upholding all things by His powerful word. After He had provided purification for sins, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high.
Colossians 1:15–17 BSB
The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For in Him all things were created, things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities. All things were created through Him and for Him. He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together.
2 Corinthians 4:4 BSB
The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers so they cannot see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.
John 1:1–3 BSB
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through Him all things were made, and without Him nothing was made that has been made.
John 1:14 BSB
The Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us. We have seen His glory, the glory of the one and only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.
John 14:9 BSB
Jesus replied, “Philip, I have been with you all this time, and still you do not know Me? Anyone who has seen Me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’?
The same as in the Old testament, the children of Israel could not see the father, but they could see what was called , the angel of The Lord
Exodus 19:24 BSB
And the LORD replied, “Go down and bring Aaron with you. But the priests and the people must not break through to come up to the LORD, or He will break out against them.”
and in Genesis 19:24
Genesis 19:24 BSB
Then the LORD rained down sulfur and fire on Sodom and Gomorrah—from the LORD out of the heavens.
again, there is a Lord on earth and a Lord in Heaven.
John 1:18 BSB
No one has ever seen God, but the one and only Son, who is Himself God and is at the Father’s side, has made Him known.
John here tells is that no one has seen God at any time old or new testament, but that they have only seen the son.
Exodus 33:20 BSB
But He added, “You cannot see My face, for no one can see Me and live.”
But then Exodus 33:11
Exodus 33:11 BSB
Thus the LORD would speak to Moses face to face, as a man speaks to his friend. Then Moses would return to the camp, but his young assistant Joshua son of Nun would not leave the tent.
So who did Moses see , The Angel of The Lord , The Pre existent Christ
The same angel of The Lord who says this Judges 2:1-2
Judges 2:1–4 BSB
Now the angel of the LORD went up from Gilgal to Bochim and said, “I brought you up out of Egypt and led you into the land that I had promised to your fathers, and I said, ‘I will never break My covenant with you, and you are not to make a covenant with the people of this land, but you shall tear down their altars.’ Yet you have not obeyed My voice. What is this you have done? So now I tell you that I will not drive out these people before you; they will be thorns in your sides, and their gods will be a snare to you.” When the angel of the LORD had spoken these words to all the Israelites, the people lifted up their voices and wept.
but The Prophet Samuel in 1 Samuel 10:18
1 Samuel 10:18 BSB
and said to the Israelites, “This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: ‘I brought Israel up out of Egypt, and I rescued you from the hands of the Egyptians and of all the kingdoms that oppressed you.’
So again, that angel of The Lord is Yahweh, the God of Israel
but the father tells us that his name is in this angel, this angel is also Yahweh Exodus 23:21
Exodus 23:21 BSB
Pay attention to him and listen to his voice; do not defy him, for he will not forgive rebellion, since My Name is in him.
We see this in Exodus 3:1-6
Exodus 3:1–6 BSB
Meanwhile, Moses was shepherding the flock of his father-in-law Jethro, the priest of Midian. He led the flock to the far side of the wilderness and came to Horeb, the mountain of God. There the angel of the LORD appeared to him in a blazing fire from within a bush. Moses saw the bush ablaze with fire, but it was not consumed. So Moses thought, “I must go over and see this marvelous sight. Why is the bush not burning up?” When the LORD saw that he had gone over to look, God called out to him from within the bush, “Moses, Moses!” “Here I am,” he answered. “Do not come any closer,” God said. “Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy ground.” Then He said, “I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.” At this, Moses hid his face, for he was afraid to look at God.
We see the Angel of The Lord was in the bush but the Lord called out from the bush, the Angel of Yahweh is Yahweh
Exodus 3:13–14 BSB
Then Moses asked God, “Suppose I go to the Israelites and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is His name?’ What should I tell them?” God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: ‘I AM has sent me to you.’ ”
This angel of The Lord, who is also the Lord says his name is I am, now fast forward to the new testament Jesus makes 8 I am statements
I am The Bread of Life John 6:35
I am The Light of The World John 8:12
I am The Door -John 10:7-9
I am The Good Shepherd John 10:11
I am The Resurrection and The Life John 11:25
I am The Way, The Truth and The Life John 14:6
I am The True Vine John 15:1
Now you know I want to give you 30 scriptures to explain all of these, but I don't have the time the most important of them all is this one
John 8:54–59 BSB
Jesus answered, “If I glorify Myself, My glory means nothing. The One who glorifies Me is My Father, of whom you say ‘He is our God.’ You do not know Him, but I know Him. If I said I did not know Him, I would be a liar like you. But I do know Him, and I keep His word. Your father Abraham rejoiced that he would see My day. He saw it and was glad.” Then the Jews said to Him, “You are not yet fifty years old, and You have seen Abraham?” “Truly, truly, I tell you,” Jesus declared, “before Abraham was born, I am!” At this, they picked up stones to throw at Him. But Jesus was hidden and went out of the temple area.
Here the Messiah claims full stop to be that I am in Exodus 3 , and the Jews understand that his is claiming to be that I am , God in the Flesh, The Angel of The Lord in the Flesh, because they pick up rocks to stone him for blasphemy.
This Tie that Mark makes from Isiah 40:3 is not one that is without base but one that is based in the scriptures, and he wants you to immediately know that Jesus Christ is The Son of God, The Angel of The Lord, Yahweh in the flesh.
Do you have the same profession as Mark, the one that would have gotten him kill that Christ doesn't just reign in heaven, but he reigns on earth, Christ doesn't just reign over my mind how I think, but also over my heart, my actions. Is he that son of God ruling over you, Is he your Lord and Savior or just your savior or neither. He has to be both, you have to let go, you have to let him lead you into all righteousness into all truth. You need to Immediately make him Lord of All because just as Mark was martyred before his time you don’t know how long you have left, make your decision today, chose ye this day whom you will serve, the spirit or the flesh. Now if Jesus in Yahweh in The Flesh come down to die a sinner's death for me and for you then repentance should not be optional for you. If you know where he came from and what he did for you there is no way you do not accept him, receive the gift of the holy spirit and walk in his way. and I am true repentance not just lip service, The God of the universe called you by name and died on the cross so that you can be saved. Like Mark I compel you to Immediately come to Yeshua, come to Christ, he will save you, he will wash you clean, he will give you a new heart of flesh and take away that heart of stone that is stopping you from worshiping him and serving him surrendering to him. He is the one who made that promise to you to give you that new heart all you have to do is ask and believe, come to me all who labor and are heave laden and I will give you rest take my yoke upon for and learn of me for I am meek and lowly of heart and you will fins rest for your souls, his yoke is easy and his burden is light. For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son that whosoever believed in him shall no perish, but have eternal life . The Promise is there for you, the rest is there for you, the forgiveness is there for you, the love is there for you, the new you is waiting, the joy and peace is waiting all you have to do is accept Immediately
