1 Kings 13 - the strange story of the prophet who condemned Jeroboam

Big Idea: God wants our obedience more than He wants our skill, creativity, or influence.

Steadfastness in the Obscure

Taking sheep on a mountain - “Greatness comes by being out there.” (Social media, extroverted)
But don’t make the opposite mistake of thinking introversion is great on its own
Jesus 40 days in the wilderness
David
Mundane
When no one’s watching
When it seems small, unimportant
Finding joy - What’s truly important - Not excellence per se or doing hard things - Knowing and obeying the invisible God
Caring for something for your wife, Making a phone call to a friend, Reading your Bible

Respect for the Holiness of God

Life-Giving Fire
Holiness as righteousness, perfect blending of all his attributes
Holiness as otherness
Jesus in the temptation
Don’t test the Lord your God
"God is sovereign over all things, from the grandest cosmic events to the smallest details of our lives. He works all things according to the counsel of His own will, ensuring His perfect purposes are accomplished, even through suffering, leading us to greater joy in Him.” - John Piper
Repentance without Legalism, Soft Heart - Job
Joy that comes from not making it about you. I’m selfish.

Faithfulness to the Word Given

In spite of your own sense of inadequacy
Security
In order to reveal who God is… not an idol of our own imagining
In order to know God when He acts...
In order to do what he wants
Jesus, the better Moses, doing what the Father told him to do and saying what the Father gave him to say
As the church - Matthew 28:19-20
Matthew 28:19–20 ESV
19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
