Release of His Spirit

The Suffering of our Lord
Psalm 22:11–18 “Be not far from me, for trouble is near, and there is none to help. Many bulls encompass me; strong bulls of Bashan surround me; they open wide their mouths at me, like a ravening and roaring lion. I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint; my heart is like wax; it is melted within my breast; my strength is dried up like a potsherd, and my tongue sticks to my jaws; you lay me in the dust of death. For dogs encompass me; a company of evildoers encircles me; they have pierced my hands and feet— I can count all my bones— they stare and gloat over me; they divide my garments among them, and for my clothing they cast lots.”
Beaten with cords (made of sharp objects and rocks), beaten with fists, dehydrated, spat on, mocked, brought to the point of exhaustion, almost to the point of death
Strung up on the Cross (about the 3rd hour of the day 9am), Nailed by His hands and feet for support -
...And Darkness falls on the land

There is a reason why we must be humbled to consider the Sufferings of Christ
The only Sinless and Righteous Man to ever walk the face of the earth,
Sent by God as the offer of Peace
Isaiah 9:6–7 “For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end, on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time forth and forevermore. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this.”
Charged with the most heinous of Crimes
Sentenced to Death
Now we understand what it will take for us to be reconciled to God
The penalty for our sin is death (eternal)
Or accept the Perfect Sacrifice as a Peace Offering
We mustn’t forsake this opportunity
Totality of the wrath of God for the Sins of the Elect is poured on the Son of God
Even the Sun responds to this Judgement - as it hides it’s face in shame
From the 6th hour (noon) to the Ninth Hour (3pm)
Amos 8:9–10 ““And on that day,” declares the Lord God, “I will make the sun go down at noon and darken the earth in broad daylight. I will turn your feasts into mourning and all your songs into lamentation; I will bring sackcloth on every waist and baldness on every head; I will make it like the mourning for an only son and the end of it like a bitter day.”
There is only One who can release Him from this Suffering
Who is that? - This was the topic of last weeks sermon
Answer: God / Highlights the Triune Nature of God
The Power that can pull Him off of the Cross is of the HS
The One who can send the legion of Angels and avoid the nails is Jesus the Christ
But the HS acts for the Christ (in submission) and the Christ awaits on (submits to) the call of the Father
And the Father? He is pleased to crush the Son on behalf of the People
The Father turns His head so that the payment of transgressions against Him may be payed in full
Apostle’s Creed: He descended into Hell
This is Hell - the absence of God
Jesus has humbled Himself
Off the Throne, Past the Angels and Men, into a lowly Manger - and into the service as a Bondservant
Philippians 2:6–7 “who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men.”
The Holy Spirit Stands by
And the Father turns His face
Matthew 27:46 “And about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, “Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?” that is, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?””
And the Bystanders: Wait! Let’s see if Elijah will save Him!
The Expectation:
Malachi 4:5–6 ““Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the great and awesome day of the Lord comes. And he will turn the hearts of fathers to their children and the hearts of children to their fathers, lest I come and strike the land with a decree of utter destruction.””
You missed it
JtB came in the Spirit of Elijah
In one sense: They didn’t miss it - but are given mercy to repent
And for them, on their behalf, with one last breath
Luke 23:46 “Then Jesus, calling out with a loud voice, said, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit!” And having said this he breathed his last.”
John 19:30 “When Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, “It is finished,” and he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.”

Reaction of Creation

Just as in the very first day: the light comes back on
By the response of Creation, we understand the implication of humanity’s collective walk away from God
We were supposed to be taking care of it, subduing it under the authority of God, Conquering it for the King!
Genesis 1:26–28 “Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. And God blessed them. And God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.””
And ever since we left our post and purpose: All of Creation groans for the rightful institution of God and His authority over it
Response of Creation to the Wrath of God being poured out
Darkness
the Earth Quakes
The Rocks Split
The Curtain is Torn
Imagine this:
The Earth Quakes and bodies start to fall out of the mountain as their tombs are opened
They were not there on Accident - But were awaiting the coming Messiah
And they will await the Resurrection of the Lord that they may too, receive their inheritance
1 Co. 15

Reconciliation with God

What’s the Point?
What is Salvation?
What is the absence of Wrath?
Reconciliation with God
Hebrews 10:19–24 “Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the holy places by the blood of Jesus, by the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain, that is, through his flesh, and since we have a great priest over the house of God, let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful. And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works,”
