1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. He came as a witness, to bear witness about the light, that all might believe through him. He was not the light, but came to bear witness about the light.

The true light, which gives light to everyone, was coming into the world. He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet the world did not know him. He came to his own, and his own people did not receive him. But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.

And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth. (John bore witness about him, and cried out, “This was he of whom I said, ‘He who comes after me ranks before me, because he was before me.’ ”) For from his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace. For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. No one has ever seen God; the only God, who is at the Father’s side, he has made him known.

The LORD possessed me at the beginning of his work,

the first of his acts of old.

Ages ago I was set up,

at the first, before the beginning of the earth.

When there were no depths I was brought forth,

when there were no springs abounding with water.

Before the mountains had been shaped,

before the hills, I was brought forth,

before he had made the earth with its fields,

or the first of the dust of the world.

When he established the heavens, I was there;

when he drew a circle on the face of the deep,

when he made firm the skies above,

when he established the fountains of the deep,

when he assigned to the sea its limit,

so that the waters might not transgress his command,

when he marked out the foundations of the earth,

then I was beside him, like a master workman,

and I was daily his delight,

rejoicing before him always,

rejoicing in his inhabited world

and delighting in the children of man.

For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together.

John 3:19 ESV
And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil.
Study of John 1:1-5
John 1:1-3
John is spending the first part of his Gospel making sure we know what the Old Testament says about Jesus. He is proving that while the Messiah is new to us He is not new to the world or people of the Old Testament
Proverbs 8:22–31 (ESV)

John 1:1–3 (ESV)
The Word Became Flesh
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made.
Colossians 1:16–17 (ESV)
16 For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. 17 And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together.
John 1:4
John transitions from Jesus being present at the beginning of time to state that not only was Jesus there at the beginning of the creation of the world but that He also holds the keys to life. This statement by John tells us Jesus has breathed life into the world but more importantly He is able to breathe life into us/humans and then he is able to extend that life on a NEW EDEN that He will create.
John 1:4 (ESV)
4 In him was life, and the life was the light of men.
John 1:5
The darkness has not overcome it because people have chosen the darkness over the light. We see where back to John 6:44 Jesus says you cannot come to Him without first being called/drawn by the Father. We love the darkness and even prefer the simplicity and ease of which we can navigate life. There is very little judgement in dark places. Have you ever looked inside of a night club or a pub during the daytime? All the joy and beauty of the night is shown for what it is. Worn out and ugly. We avoid this...it is disappointing.
John 1:5
The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. 1
Jn 3:19 | And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil.

And this is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, “Who are you?” He confessed, and did not deny, but confessed, “I am not the Christ.” And they asked him, “What then? Are you Elijah?” He said, “I am not.” “Are you the Prophet?” And he answered, “No.” So they said to him, “Who are you? We need to give an answer to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?” He said, “I am the voice of one crying out in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way of the Lord,’ as the prophet Isaiah said.”

(Now they had been sent from the Pharisees.) They asked him, “Then why are you baptizing, if you are neither the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?” John answered them, “I baptize with water, but among you stands one you do not know, even he who comes after me, the strap of whose sandal I am not worthy to untie.” These things took place in Bethany across the Jordan, where John was baptizing.

1:21 Are you Elijah The prophet Elijah’s miraculous ascent into heaven on a fiery divine chariot (2 Kgs 2:11) fueled the belief that he would return as a forerunner of the Messiah. The OT explicitly attests to this expectation in Mal 4:5.

Malachi predicts Elijah’s coming before the Day of Yahweh, which heralded both judgment and salvation, so Elijah was understood to come in the last days before the messianic age. Jewish tradition further attests to the expectation of Elijah’s return in a story from the Talmud about the coming of the Messiah (Babylonian Talmud, Sanhedrin 98a). Leaving a place setting or extra cup of wine “for Elijah” is still part of Jewish practice in observing the Passover.

John’s name is announced to Zechariah by the angel, even as his purpose as forerunner is revealed before birth (1:13–17). Such a consecration from birth is reminiscent of the call of the OT prophet Jeremiah (Jer 1:5).

Study of John 1: 19-28
Sent Priest and Levites -
The Priests were from the class of Pharisees and the Levites were from the temple group.
The Levites had the responsibility of caring for the temple.
The Levites’ responsibilities divided among three family groups, each with specialized tasks. The sons of Kohath carried the tabernacle furniture after it had been covered by the priests, the sons of Gershon cared for the coverings and screens, and the sons of Merari carried and erected the tabernacle’s frame1. They carried the tabernacle and all its furnishings, took care of it, and camped around it; when the tabernacle was to set out, the Levites took it down, and when it was to be pitched, they set it up (Num 1:50–53).
Priests and Levites represented the two major groups responsible for Temple service. Including both ensured a comprehensive, official inquiry.
Who are you? He did not deny, but confessed, I am not the Christ
Are you Elijah? I am not.
Are you THE prophet. No
Who are you? - I am the voice....
John gives short answers and answers the final question he states what he is doing by quoting Isaiah.
This is the reason they thought he was Elijah.
Malachi 4:5  ESV
Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the great and awesome
