Greetings…
“Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine! O what a foretaste of glory divine! Heir of salvation, purchase of God, born of His Spirit, washed in His blood.”
One of the greatest things that the faithful child of God enjoys is blessed assurance.
A faithful child of God can have a confidence that will propel him or her through the turmoils of life.
It most certainly should be reassuring to know that if we were to die today that we would be save in the arms of Jesus.
But there are many who do not have this assurance.
There are many who do not have that confidence.
The bible is very clear that we can and are to feel secure in our soul.
In other words, we are to have a true inner peace.
We are supposed to have no fear because of this assurance.
7 for God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.
An assurance of salvation.
38 For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.
An assurance of hope.
11 And we desire each one of you to show the same earnestness to have the full assurance of hope until the end
28 And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.
With that in mind let’s examine our lesson for today.
Blessed assurance is…
Knowledge Of The Truth
Knowledge Of The Truth
Assurance Comes From Understanding
Assurance Comes From Understanding
Assurance comes from understanding.
1 For I want you to know how great a struggle I have for you and for those at Laodicea and for all who have not seen me face to face, 2 that their hearts may be encouraged, being knit together in love, to reach all the riches of full assurance of understanding and the knowledge of God’s mystery, which is Christ
Understanding something comes from studying.
1 My son, if you receive my words and treasure up my commandments with you, 2 making your ear attentive to wisdom and inclining your heart to understanding; 3 yes, if you call out for insight and raise your voice for understanding,
4 if you seek it like silver and search for it as for hidden treasures, 5 then you will understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God. 6 For the Lord gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding
Assurance understood means we can draw closer to God.
22 let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water.
17 So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.
In other words, if we want that “blessed assurance” we must be a people of the good book.
15 Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth.
13 Until I come, devote yourself to the public reading of Scripture, to exhortation, to teaching.
Summary
Summary
That blessed assurance comes from understanding the gospel that can be grasp through studying God’s precious saving message, within his holy book.
Blessed assurance is also…
Confidence
Confidence
Because Of The Cross
Because Of The Cross
We can have confidence in the blessed assurance because of what the cross provided us.
It provides us a Messiah that is near to us.
13 But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ.
It provides us a pathway of forgiveness from our sins.
7 In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace
It provides us a pathway to eternal life.
16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.
We can have confidence in the blessed assurance…
Because Of The Blessings
Because Of The Blessings
In Christ we are blessed with every spiritual blessing.
3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places
What are some of these spiritual blessings that should give us confidence?
We can have confidence because of the blessing of knowing we are triumphant in Christ.
14 But thanks be to God, who in Christ always leads us in triumphal procession, and through us spreads the fragrance of the knowledge of him everywhere.
We can have confidence because of the blessing of knowing Christ has overcome our sins even as Christians.
7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. 8 If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
We can have confidence because of the blessing of knowing we have an eternal inheritance.
11 In him we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to the purpose of him who works all things according to the counsel of his will
This is why being in Christ brings us assurance and thus confidence.
Because God has blessed us with all spiritual blessings in Christ Jesus.
We can have confidence in the blessed assurance lastly…
Because Of The Word
Because Of The Word
It directs our path toward heaven and away from hell.
105 Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.
We can have confidence God’s word will direct our path to heaven because it is true.
17 Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth.
160 The sum of your word is truth, and every one of your righteous rules endures forever.
28 And now, O Lord God, you are God, and your words are true, and you have promised this good thing to your servant.
142 Your righteousness is righteous forever, and your law is true.
Summary
Summary
Blessed assurance is found within the faithful and is demonstrated in our confidence in the cross, spiritual blessings we were given, and the word God leads us with.
Conclusion
Conclusion
To enjoy this blessed assurance we must be obedient to our loving God.
18 Little children, let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth. 19 By this we shall know that we are of the truth and reassure our heart before him; 20 for whenever our heart condemns us, God is greater than our heart, and he knows everything.
21 Beloved, if our heart does not condemn us, we have confidence before God; 22 and whatever we ask we receive from him, because we keep his commandments and do what pleases him. 23 And this is his commandment, that we believe in the name of his Son Jesus Christ and love one another, just as he has commanded us. 24 Whoever keeps his commandments abides in God, and God in him. And by this we know that he abides in us, by the Spirit whom he has given us.
To enjoy this blessed assurance we must be steadfast in our faith in God.
58 Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain.
12 Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him.
To enjoy this blessed assurance we must be always watchful and brave for Christ.
13 Be watchful, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong.
Invitation
1 Behold, the Lord’s hand is not shortened, that it cannot save, or his ear dull, that it cannot hear; 2 but your iniquities have made a separation between you and your God, and your sins have hidden his face from you so that he does not hear.
6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men.
17 So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.
6 And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.
30 The times of ignorance God overlooked, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent,
33 So therefore, any one of you who does not renounce all that he has cannot be my disciple.
32 “Therefore whoever confesses Me before men, him I will also confess before My Father who is in heaven. 33 But whoever denies Me before men, him I will also deny before My Father who is in heaven.
8 in flaming fire, inflicting vengeance on those who do not know God and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus.
1 Now I would remind you, brothers, of the gospel I preached to you, which you received, in which you stand, 2 and by which you are being saved, if you hold fast to the word I preached to you—unless you believed in vain. 3 For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, 4 that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures,
3 Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4 We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life. 5 For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his.
12 Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him.
