That we may know

1 John 5:16–21 NKJV
16 If anyone sees his brother sinning a sin which does not lead to death, he will ask, and He will give him life for those who commit sin not leading to death. There is sin leading to death. I do not say that he should pray about that. 17 All unrighteousness is sin, and there is sin not leading to death. 18 We know that whoever is born of God does not sin; but he who has been born of God keeps himself, and the wicked one does not touch him. 19 We know that we are of God, and the whole world lies under the sway of the wicked one. 20 And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us an understanding, that we may know Him who is true; and we are in Him who is true, in His Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God and eternal life. 21 Little children, keep yourselves from idols. Amen.
Intro: As Christians we have assurances that those who are not Christians do not have.
We have things that we can be confident in. Some things that are ours, that unbelievers do not have.
Form the beginning of I John all the way to the end John has told us that we are to walk in the light as he's in light
We have fellowship with God and with his son
We are to have fellowship with with the people of God
We are to Love one another if you love one another you love the children of God you know that you have been born again you may know that you have eternal life.
Your assurance of eternal life is not a feeling, it is based on truth.
You don’t have to worry about where you will go when you die.
6 times vs 14-20John makes the statement “we know
John wants us to know.
If you have ever shared the gospel of Jesus with some, and it has come to the point where you are asking them about their relationship with Jesus, they may say “I don’t know”
John wants us to know that we have eternal life because of our belief our trust our faith our confidence in Jesus.
“We know” Knowing to more then just a head knowledge of knowing.
We know: “we are sure”
We know: “absolutely”
We know: “positively”
last week we look prayer, and how we can know that when we pray according to Gods will, He will hear us. This is an assurance that you are truly child of God.
Is these first few verses today, John will continue to talk about prayer, but in a different way.

I. Pray for fellow believers: VS 16-17

VS 16
1 John 5:16 NKJV
16 If anyone sees his brother sinning a sin which does not lead to death, he will ask, and He will give him life for those who commit sin not leading to death. There is sin leading to death. I do not say that he should pray about that.
The sin unto death is not “blasphemy against the Holy Spirit”
Matthew 12:31–32 NKJV
31 “Therefore I say to you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven men, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven men. 32 Anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man, it will be forgiven him; but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit, it will not be forgiven him, either in this age or in the age to come.
The Holy Spirit calls us unto salvation.
2 Thessalonians 2:13–14 NKJV
13 But we are bound to give thanks to God always for you, brethren beloved by the Lord, because God from the beginning chose you for salvation through sanctification by the Spirit and belief in the truth, 14 to which He called you by our gospel, for the obtaining of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.
When someone is convicted, and the Holy Spirit calls them unto salvation and they reject. If the die without being saved they will go to hell.
There will be other opportunities .
But this is a very dangerous thing to do, at some point God will no longer call that person to salvation. They have “blasphemy against the Holy Spirit”
This could be a person that has been witnessed to over and over.
This could be a lost church member. And there is a point where the Holy Spirit no longer calls them.
1. Now let’s look the sin unto death. (Sin that leads unto to death)
a. So what is a sin unto death? Good question.

John had no doubt that “a sin unto death” could be committed. He had been present in the Jerusalem church, in those very early days, when Peter had passed the sentence of death on Ananias and Sapphira for lying to the Holy Spirit.

The time between the sin and the punishment was very short, indeed, although some considerable time might well have elapsed between the time the evil thought was conceived and incubated and the time it was actually done (

1 Corinthians 11:30

Sin is always serious, but there are some sins that call for premature death for a believer, and consequent shame and loss at the judgment seat of Christ

b. I believe if a true Christian no you continue to live a sinful life, without repenting of your sin, you are in danger sinning unto death.
I truly believe Christian can get so far away from God, and will not turning back.
c. So how do we avoid sin unto death? Don’t live a sinful life style.
READ VS 16 AGAIN.
1 John 5:16 NKJV
16 If anyone sees his brother sinning a sin which does not lead to death, he will ask, and He will give him life for those who commit sin not leading to death. There is sin leading to death. I do not say that he should pray about that.
d. I have question for you, but first look at VS 17
1 John 5:17 NKJV
17 All unrighteousness is sin, and there is sin not leading to death.
e. Now, how many of you know someone that is a Christian, (or least you a pretty sure they are) that is living a sinful life style?
f. All unrighteousness in sin: But not all sin leads unto death.
Unrighteousness: All wrong doing. Jesus said, if you love me, you will keep my commandments.
g. First, we all sin, what do we do. I John 1:9 Confessing and repenting.
2. Let’s get back to others, someone we know that is a Christian that is living a sinful life style. What is the best thing to do for them? Pray for them.
a. Challenge: Pray for someone that you know, that is a Christian that is living a sinful life. But first I Cor 11:28
1 Corinthians 11:28 NKJV
28 But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of the bread and drink of the cup.
b. When we pray for someone, we need to pray that they are truly saved:
c. Being saved is not……….
d. Being saved is someone repents of their sin;
e. To repent: GW means to think differently. Change of mind. Change of the inner man.
f. If someone prays a pray, and asks for forgiveness but never changes, then there was no repentance, and there was no salvation.

II. We can live a Godly life. VS 18-21

1. In VS 18-20 We know
VS 18
1 John 5:18 NKJV
18 We know that whoever is born of God does not sin; but he who has been born of God keeps himself, and the wicked one does not touch him.
Born of God: salvation, repented. Elab more.
We know that whoever is born of God does not sin

We know absolutely that everyone who has been born of God and as a result is a regenerated individual does not keep on habitually sinning

a. The Holy Spirit lives inside every true believer. The Holy Spirit in us does not sin, but we still live in the flesh. And is the battle a wages inside of us.
b. So do we still sin? Yes. But as a believer, follower of Jesus, is not going to deliberately and knowingly practice a sinful life.  (Look back at VS 17)
c. Everyone is guilty of sin. We have all ignored God, disobeyed God, and maybe even rebelled against God at some time in our lives.
d. Because of sin, we cannot come before God. But that is the reason Jesus came to give his life for us. He dead for our sins, in our place, taking the punishment that we deserve.
e. That is the reason that we came come before God.
VS 18b but he who has been born of God keeps himself, and the wicked one does not touch him.
but he who has been Born of God keeps himself,
To be born of God, is to be born again. Elab
God keeps us, He protects us.
We cannot save ourselves and we cannot keep ourselves.
A true born again believer in Jesus is is kept of the power of God.
1 John 4:4 NKJV
4 You are of God, little children, and have overcome them, because He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.
f. We are to live a Holy life. RIGHT?
1 Peter 1:16 NKJV
16 because it is written, “Be holy, for I am holy.”
g. Do you have to fight temptations? We all do, the only way to win the fight is not through our own power, but through the power of Jesus.
VS 19
1 John 5:19 NKJV
19 We know that we are of God, and the whole world lies under the sway of the wicked one.
We Know:
1. We are of God: Elab who John is writing too. I John 2:1
1 John 2:1 NKJV
1 My little children, these things I write to you, so that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.
a. We know that we are of the father, we know that we a “In Christ”
Proverbs 18:10 NKJV
10 The name of the Lord is a strong tower; The righteous run to it and are safe.
b. Jesus is our rock: “Rock of ages, cleft for me, let me hide myself in thee”
the whole world lieth in wickedness
c. You are either of God, or of the world, and Satan is the prince of the world.
d. The world is full of wickedness: II Corn 4:4
e. We cannot get caught up in the wickedness of the world. Elab
VS 20
1 John 5:20 NKJV
20 And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us an understanding, that we may know Him who is true; and we are in Him who is true, in His Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God and eternal life.
And we know that the Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding:
1. Through the new birth we become new creations, we have a new understanding and new wisdom-but only in Jesus.
a. The natural man (not saved) cannot receive the things of the Spirit of God. I Corn 2:14
b. And since we (followers of Jesus) have an understanding, then we should live a Holy life. We should not want to sin.
c. As believers, we know that God has not only come into the world, but he has come into our hearts.
d. And through this he has given us an understating. We understand it all? No we don’t.
e. But, we have enough of an understanding of the gospel to be saved and the ability to understand things of God.
This is the true God, and eternal life:
1. The true God is eternal life, in us by his spirit. I Corn 2:10
a. The desire to become a Christian and the ability to understand how to believe is a gift from God, reviled to us by the Holy Spirit.
b. The Holy Spirit will revile to us how to live a Holy Life.
VS 21
1 John 5:21 NKJV
21 Little children, keep yourselves from idols. Amen.
1. Elab on idols in John’s day. Elab what they were told by false teachers.
a. Elab idols in our day. Anything you put before God.
