Recap Last Week: Last week Pastor Phil kicked off our brand new series “New Thing” and asked us if we were ready for the new.
What is the main theme of the sermon? When God does something new, He chooses to partner with His people. But we must stop hiding and start fighting.
How does the sermon connect with the core beliefs of Christianity?
Paul says that God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and a sound mind. Proverbs 28:1 also says that the righteous are as courageous as lions. Jonathan and his armor bearer show that when God calls us to something, we don’t have to be afraid, no matter how outnumbered or ill-equipped we might feel.
What specific spiritual practices were suggested in the sermon to enhance personal faith?
Jonathan had to recall God’s character before he fought the Philistines. He reminded himself and his armor bearer that God can save with a large army or with a few (Gideon). When we begin to move forward in the new thing God calls us to, we will face challenges. And when we do, we must remind ourselves of who God is. Like Jonathan, that is what will give us the courage to face the enemy head-on.
In what ways can the message of the sermon impact your daily life?
Learn to remind yourself of God’s faithfulness and power every day.
You’re in a battle everyday. Don’t be afraid but be aware.
There are other people around you who are watching to see how you’ll respond to life’s battles. You can model fear or faith.
What biblical passages were referenced, and how do they support the sermon’s main message?
1 Samuel 13:23 - 1 Samuel 14:23. The entire message is built on this passage.
What do you think was the most important point made in the sermon?
Remembering who God is gives us the courage and strength we need to face any challenge.
What does the sermon teach us about God’s character?
God is faithful to bring victory to His people.
God wants His people to partner with Him in bringing victory from heaven to earth.
God’s power is unmatched and unbeatable.
Are there any new spiritual habits you feel inspired to form after hearing the sermon?
I’m not sure.
How can you apply the lessons from the sermon in your relationships with friends?
I can encourage them to remember who God is, like Jonathan did for his armor bearer.
I can be an armor bearer to my friends when they are pursuing what God has for them.
Fearless Faith: The Battle Within
Bible Passage: 1 Samuel 13:23-14:23
Summary: This passage highlights the courage of Jonathan, who initiates a battle against the Philistines, illustrating the theme of active faith amidst fear and uncertainty.
Application: This sermon challenges Christians to take action in their faith, stepping out of their comfort zones to engage boldly with their challenges, just as Jonathan stepped into battle despite overwhelming odds.
Teaching: The teaching focuses on the importance of not allowing fear to paralyze us in our spiritual journey but rather, to actively pursue God's will and fight the good fight of faith.
How this passage could point to Christ: In the broader narrative of Scripture, Christ embodies true bravery and sacrifice, going into battle against sin and death on our behalf, ultimately granting us the victory through His resurrection.
Big Idea: Embrace the call to boldness in faith; do not allow fear to dictate our actions but rather trust in God's provision as we engage with the battles of life.
Recommended Study: As you prepare this sermon, consider using Logos to explore the historical context surrounding Jonathan's actions and the significance of his decisions in the overall narrative of Israel's history. Pay attention to the Hebrew terms used in the passage to deepen your understanding of the text's call to action. Investigate the commentaries on this passage regarding the implications of faith-filled leadership and its application to contemporary challenges.
1. Jonathan's Journey Begins
1 Samuel 13:23-14:7
You could explore how Jonathan's initiative sets the stage for a significant victory. Despite Israel's dire position, Jonathan demonstrates a bold faith by seeking out a confrontation with the Philistines. This kind of fearless faith suggests a willingness to trust in God's strength rather than succumbing to paralyzing fear. When we face our own daunting challenges, perhaps we too should step forward in faith, knowing that God goes before us. The key is to align our bold actions with God's will, trusting that His power will sustain us as we engage in our battles.
2. Victory Through Valor
1 Samuel 14:8-23
Maybe you can highlight how Jonathan, with only his armor-bearer, boldly climbs into the enemy's camp, spurred by the belief that "nothing can hinder the Lord." This act of faith sets off a God-driven confusion among the Philistines, leading to Israel's triumph. This reflects the idea that our battles are never fought alone. Like Christ, who faced the ultimate battle alone on the cross, we are assured that God is with us in our battles. Christians can find courage in knowing that with God, even the mightiest of challenges can be overcome.
