Call to Worship
Call to Worship
The earth is the Lord’s and the fullness thereof,
the world and those who dwell therein,
for he has founded it upon the seas
and established it upon the rivers.
Who shall ascend the hill of the Lord?
And who shall stand in his holy place?
He who has clean hands and a pure heart,
who does not lift up his soul to what is false
and does not swear deceitfully.
He will receive blessing from the Lord
and righteousness from the God of his salvation.

“You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. You shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I the Lord your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and the fourth generation of those who hate me,
Church, how quickly do our hearts turn to worship false gods. We eagerly seek after anything that could receive our praise and adoration. We have ignored the one true God, the God who bought and redeemed us as we chase after vapors in the wind.
Confession
Confession
Therefore let us humbly confess our sins by kneeling before our God:
God, our heavenly Father, We confess to You, that we have surely sinned against You in thought, word, and deed; Not only in outward transgressions, But also in secret thoughts and desires that we are unable fully to understand, But which are all known to You. We are in need of deliverance from Your enemies and our infirmities. For this reason we flee for refuge to Your infinite mercy, Seeking and imploring Your forgiveness and deliverance, Through our Lord, Jesus Christ. Amen.
Let us spend time in silent prayer confessing our sins.

“I, I am he
who blots out your transgressions for my own sake,
and I will not remember your sins.
Church, at the cross, Christ took your sins upon himself so that you may be cleansed. No longer do your sins condemn you for the great I AM has forgotten your sins. You transgressions have been blotted out for the Lord has called and redeem you. The King came to rescue and the priest came so that at this very moment he has interceded on your behalf. It doesn’t matter what you think and it doesn’t matter what you feel. But what matters is what God has declared. And he told you church that he will not remember your sins.

Therefor as an ordained minister of the gospel, I declare to you that your sins are forgiven. In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
So lift up your hearts
We lift them up to the Lord
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God
It is good and right to do so

Truly it is good, right, and our joyful duty at all times and in all places to give thanks to you, O Lord, holy Father, almighty and everlasting God. For you revealed your Christ to the nations: by a star you led the Magi, in the Jordan you manifested the beloved Son, at Cana you first showed forth his glory; that all peoples might believe and live.Therefore, with angels and archangels and all the company of heaven, we praise and magnify your glorious Name, evermore praising you and singing…

Old Testament Reading
Old Testament Reading
Our old testament reading comes from Isaiah 42:1-9
Behold my servant, whom I uphold,
my chosen, in whom my soul delights;
I have put my Spirit upon him;
he will bring forth justice to the nations.
He will not cry aloud or lift up his voice,
or make it heard in the street;
a bruised reed he will not break,
and a faintly burning wick he will not quench;
he will faithfully bring forth justice.
He will not grow faint or be discouraged
till he has established justice in the earth;
and the coastlands wait for his law.
Thus says God, the Lord,
who created the heavens and stretched them out,
who spread out the earth and what comes from it,
who gives breath to the people on it
and spirit to those who walk in it:
“I am the Lord; I have called you in righteousness;
I will take you by the hand and keep you;
I will give you as a covenant for the people,
a light for the nations,
to open the eyes that are blind,
to bring out the prisoners from the dungeon,
from the prison those who sit in darkness.
I am the Lord; that is my name;
my glory I give to no other,
nor my praise to carved idols.
Behold, the former things have come to pass,
and new things I now declare;
before they spring forth
I tell you of them.”

Psalm
Psalm
Our psalm comes from Psalm 29
A Psalm of David.
Ascribe to the Lord, O heavenly beings,
ascribe to the Lord glory and strength.
Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name;
worship the Lord in the splendor of holiness.
The voice of the Lord is over the waters;
the God of glory thunders,
the Lord, over many waters.
The voice of the Lord is powerful;
the voice of the Lord is full of majesty.
The voice of the Lord breaks the cedars;
the Lord breaks the cedars of Lebanon.
He makes Lebanon to skip like a calf,
and Sirion like a young wild ox.
The voice of the Lord flashes forth flames of fire.
The voice of the Lord shakes the wilderness;
the Lord shakes the wilderness of Kadesh.
The voice of the Lord makes the deer give birth
and strips the forests bare,
and in his temple all cry, “Glory!”
The Lord sits enthroned over the flood;
the Lord sits enthroned as king forever.
May the Lord give strength to his people!
May the Lord bless his people with peace!

Epistle
Epistle
Our epistle reading comes from Paul’s epistle to the Acts 10:34-43
So Peter opened his mouth and said: “Truly I understand that God shows no partiality, but in every nation anyone who fears him and does what is right is acceptable to him. As for the word that he sent to Israel, preaching good news of peace through Jesus Christ (he is Lord of all), you yourselves know what happened throughout all Judea, beginning from Galilee after the baptism that John proclaimed: how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power. He went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him. And we are witnesses of all that he did both in the country of the Jews and in Jerusalem. They put him to death by hanging him on a tree, but God raised him on the third day and made him to appear, not to all the people but to us who had been chosen by God as witnesses, who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead. And he commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that he is the one appointed by God to be judge of the living and the dead. To him all the prophets bear witness that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name.”

Gospel
Gospel
Our gospel reading comes from the gospel according to St Matthew 3:13-17
Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to John, to be baptized by him. John would have prevented him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?” But Jesus answered him, “Let it be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he consented. And when Jesus was baptized, immediately he went up from the water, and behold, the heavens were opened to him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming to rest on him; and behold, a voice from heaven said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.”

I believe in God, the Father almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried; he descended into hell; on the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty;from there he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting.

Sermon
Church, remember your baptism. Our passage today comes from the gospel according to Saint Matthew, the third chapter.
Holy Father,
Let the words of my mouth and the meditations of my heart be acceptable in your sight. Thank you for Christ, our rock and our redeemer. The lamb who takes away the sin of the world.
In the name of Jesus we pray, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God age after age,
Amen
Baptism is a form of death. Paul tells us in Romans that baptism is to be united with Christ in his death and his resurrection. I remember when I first realized how true this doctrine was. I was in college when I finally got baptized. And we didn’t have any kind of large baptismal so we used what we had, which in this case was an inflatable hot tub. Since we practiced full immersion I stepped into this hot tub as I was prepared to receive the sacrament. And I first realized something was wrong when I was pushed under the water. I am a big guy and the baptismal hot tub was too small, so as the baptism was taking place my head had to forcibly pushed under the lip hanging off the side of the hot tub. That was fine, until it was time to be brought back out of the water, and my head once again got stuck on the lip of this hot tub. The man baptizing me was pulling and forcing with all his might that I might be brought out of the water.
And as I am laying there, in the pool, my mind was racing, there and back again thinking I am going to drown in my baptism. How fitting, that the symbolic death we Christians put on would be a real death. How glorious and slightly terrifying. And that is when I realized the importance of Romans 6. The importance of baptism. What is means to be baptized into Christ, to have union with the son of God.
This evening we will be examing the baptism of Jesus. Why was Jesus baptized? This is a question that often strikes at us when we read this passage. And this evening that will be the question we will be answering. If you have your bibles please open them to Matthew 3:13 and we will be looking at the baptism of Jesus and how it affects us today.
Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to John, to be baptized by him.
We begin with Jesus going to John to be baptized. And Jesus is about 30 years old at this point according to Saint Luke. So it is the beginning of his ministry. And this is fascinating, Jesus at 30 years old is going to be baptized. And our mind should instantly be going to the old testament. Kids anyone know why 30 is such an important age? Besides it being really old to you? 30 is when priests began their ministry. If you were a Levite at the age of 30 you would start your priestly duties at the age of 30. And one the ways that you were prepared to become a priest was there was a ceremonial washing of water that took place. So as we read this we realize that this is a significant event. This is Jesus’ ceremonial washing that is about to take place. Jesus is about to begin his ministry as the great high priest. But in the new covenant this takes a new form. No longer are priests initiated through the ceremonies as seen in Leviticus. Instead priests are initiated into the new covenant by following the path of Jesus, through baptism.
Church, do you understand that when you were baptized you became a priest? This was one of the major beliefs on the reformation. That by following the path of Jesus, all those who are baptized enter into the priesthood of the new covenant. Church you are priests. And you say thats great, but so what? Why does it matter that I am priest? It matters because you are priest that has direct access to YHWH. He hears your voice, he welcomes you into his throne, you have a constant relationship with the one true God. No longer do you need the Levites to offer your sacrifice and make intercession to God. Because you have the same access, you can freely bring your sins, your petitions, your fears, your joys, your life, to God. You don’t need a bishop or priest or a sacrifice. Because Church you are a priest. And so therefor go and be a priest. Have fellowship and conversation with God because through baptism you have joined the most holy of orders, the priesthood of God’s people.
This is one of the reasons that it was so important that Jesus be baptized, so that his people could join in this glorious union. But there is another reason we see in this verse. It says that he comes from Galilee to the Jordan. Now this isn’t some small trip. This isn’t Jesus walks out his door and sees John and spur of the moment decides to get baptized. No Galilee to the Jordan where John was, is a journey of about 100 miles. On foot. It’d be like walking from here to our sister church, Christ Church Boerne.
And what is so amazing about this journey is that it is to the Jordan. This has to begin marinating in our minds that the Jordan is an important place in our bibles. And the place we see the Jordan be so important is in the book of Joshua. After the grumbling Israelites have all died off, Joshua leads the people into the promised land. And to go to Canaan, they crossed through the Jordan river, and they didn’t just wade through but like the red sea, the Jordan is split apart, and the people walked on dry land. And this is where Jesus comes to be baptized. He comes to be baptized and go out the water into the glorious promised land. Into the new creation that takes place through the incarnation.
And this is what we are baptized into Church. We enter into the glorious realities of the new creation through our baptism. Romans 6:4
We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.
Just as the Israelites crossed the Jordan so that they might enter into the promised land, so too do we go through the waters so that we might enter into a new life. The new life found in when we are transferred from the kingdom of darkness into the kingdom of light. The question why was Jesus baptized is answered in that through his baptism, you now become a priest and become a rightful citizen of the new creation. This is why we say remember your baptism, not because you did anything, but because Christ staked his claim on you as you were sprinkled or dipped into the water and said join me as a priest, join me in the promised land. Join me as a beloved child of God. Baptism is where God has staked his claim on you. It is where God has declared that you church are his. Remember your baptism church. The waters that cleansed from sin, cleansed you from doubt, cleansed you from anxiety, cleansed you from darkness. And when the enemy comes to with temptation or depression or doubt, remember that those wicked and perverse lies were drowned in the waters that you, the child of God, rose from into glorious new life. Church remember your baptism. And when you think, I’m not worthy, I’m not deserving of such an honor. You’re right, but youre not the one doing something in baptism, Christ is. The Lord is the active one in your baptism. He is the one doing all the work, and it through the means he has appointed, water, that this glorious transformation takes place. We see this in the following verses.
John would have prevented him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?” But Jesus answered him, “Let it be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he consented.
John tries to prevent Jesus from being baptized. Saying, I need to baptized by you, why would would you, the messiah come to me? Just a few verses earlier John had told the pharisees that he baptized with water but one would come who would baptize with fire and the holy spirit. One who would come who would cleanse his church, would gather the wheat and burn up the chaff. One who would bring his people into the glorious newness of life. And it is this one, Jesus who comes to John.
And Jesus tells John, do this, baptize me, for the fulfillment of all righteousness. For this baptism is not for the forgiveness of sin, for Christ is the holy one, the one innocent of all sin. He is the one who had no need of the cleansing nature of baptism. Instead it is for the fulfillment of righteousness. It is for the beginning of his ministry that will end on the cross when righteousness will be obtained for his people. It is for the beginning of his minstry as the holy law giver now walks in flesh and keeps all parts of the law. It is for the fulfillment of righteousness that his people may join him in the priesthood from the line of Melchizedek. It is for the fulfillment of righteousness when his people can go under the waters of baptism and emerge new creations. Church he was baptized for you. He did this for you.
We know that the cross is an act of love of Christ for his bride. But have you ever realized that he had you in mind when he went to be baptized. That he was preparing the way for you church through this act. This baptism is an act of love for you. Christ had you in mind, each and every one of you was the reason that he came to John to be baptized. This is why Jesus must be baptized, because he loves you Church. He loved you so that not only would he die for you but so as we see here that you may join him in the righteous life that he secured for you on the cross. This was done for you Church.
I think one of the greatest books written in the last 50 years, is a book called the Road by Cormac McCarthy. It was turned into a movie that was not quite as good but still good. And spoiler alert, the end of the book and movie comes when the father gives up his life so that his son may live. May try to find safety in this post-apocalyptic world. And it is such a touching scene as the father gives up everything, his own life, for his son. But if you have paid attention, you see that the entire movie is a story of the Father sacrificing for his son. Everything he does is to protect and preserve his child. He goes hungry, he gives up the best clothing, the warmest spot, he finds little pieces of joy in a barren wasteland. His entire life is spent to give his child a better life.
And we need to recognize this in Christ’s ministry. That it is all done as an act of love for his bride. So when we read the story of the baptism of Jesus, and we ask why was Jesus baptized? Because he loves me. Right, we sing this to our kids, Jesus loves me this I know - kids whats the next line say - for the bible tells me so. It is all an act of love from Christ to his people. Why was Jesus born, baptized, crucified, perform miracles, preach in the synagogues? Because he loves you.
And he welcomes you in to a glorious union that is seen in the trinity. Matthew 3:16-17
And when Jesus was baptized, immediately he went up from the water, and behold, the heavens were opened to him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming to rest on him; and behold, a voice from heaven said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.”
Jesus is baptized, and he goes up from the water, from the Jordan and then we see a glorious sight. For here we have one of the most explicitly trinitarian bible passages in all of scripture. The Son doing the will of the Father, is visited by the Spirit, and the Father declares from Heaven, that this is the Son of God, the beloved the one who has pleased the Father. And this is glorious. The trinity joining together at this moment to express all three working together for the redemption of mankind. It is the same trinity who in Genesis 1 said let us make man in our image, and now at this moment we see them once again saying, Here is the man that is well pleasing. The creation process of humanity reaches its apex in Jesus of Nazareth. The divine being who put on flesh. The man that was made in the image of God has now been completed, it is finished through Christ.
No more will mankind anxiously await its saviour for now he has come. And he entered the waters of baptism to please the Father. Through this act of God, for God is the one doing the action, mankind can once again come into union with YHWH. Once again man can join in the relationship and joy that Adam had in the garden with his creator. This is the good news, that God creates man, man falls, and then God becomes man so that man may be rescued. Praise be to God. Jesus goes walking from Galilee to Jordan, he is the active one. And in the same Jesus came to rescue his people, he went to the cross. There is nothing that you or I could have done because we were powerless against the clutches and rule of sin. But not this man. For this man could come and defeat sin death and satan, and he did it because he loves you. From the foundation of the world, the beloved of the Lord were set apart, predestined to glory, chosen by God to become sons of God. And we gain this glorious title because we gain union with the Son.
A few years ago a movie came out called the Quiet Place. And yall know I don’t watch a lot of movies but this is one of my favorites. And the ending is so spectacular. As these monsters are chasing after a family, the father runs out and makes noise to draw these beasts to himself and let his wife and children escape. And before he dies he looks at his oldest daughter, the one whose relationship has been strained all these years and using sign language he tells her that he loves her, that he has always loved her. And as a father, it just tears you apart. When I went to watch the scene again to make sure my illustration was correct, I got tears in my eyes.
I get understand this as a dad, from the moment I knew there was life I was enraptured with my love for my children. And then magnify this even greater, to the love God has for his people. For from before the foundations of the world, before the Lord spoke creation into existent, he loved his people. And that is the answer to the question, why was Jesus baptized. Because he loves you church, he has always loved you and always will. As one great theologian put it, the proof that God will never stop loving you is found in that he never had to start loving you. It is has always been part of who God is, that he loves his people.
And so the baptism of Christ is an act of love. And the joyous good news that because we are now united to Christ, we join in on the trinitarian conversation that took place at the baptism of Jesus. For the Father said Jesus was his beloved son in whom he was well pleased. And because you have union with Christ, that is you now as well. Church you are the beloved child of God and he is pleased with you.
Remember your baptism church because it was at your baptism that you gained union with Christ. When it was declared that God was pleased with you. You are the delight of God, the prophets tell us that he rejoices over you. And any lie that the enemy tries to convince you of must be kicked in the deepest and darkest pits of hell. Because you are a child of God. God is not okay with you, he doesn’t tolerate you, he doesn’t sit around thinking man if those sinners over there could just get it together then I could love them. No he loves you now, he is pleased with you now, he is rejoicing over you now.
And so now church, live like it trues. Take joy in the fact that God loves you. Live your life as a beloved child. Go to God with your prayers, with your concerns, with your worries and talk to him. Know that you are the prized possession of God. You are the apex of creation. You are his son with whom he is well pleased. Church remember your baptism.
In the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Amen
Let us pray.

Holy Father, we pray that as we receive this bread that you would grant us union with your Son. May our own flesh be cast away as we are made new through the glorious gift of his body that you have given us. Feed us Oh Father with the body of Christ that we may be one with him as he is one with you. In the powerful name of Jesus, Amen.
