What’s up Youth!
glad to be back.. it’s been a minute. Hope you had a great Christmas break.
Hook ?
maybe poll about self-worth? or story about when I was little (but could also use that for original sin)
Several times we’ve taken cards from you guys to see what you are struggling with.
Of course there are things like:
cussing
sexual sin
drinking and smoking
Honestly, no offense, but I would expect those!
There has been 1 that keeps coming up over and over again, Logan actually spoke on it at one point
but that is SELF-WORTH/SELF-ESTEEM
confidence in one's own worth or abilities
they way we’ve seen these on cards is that you just don’t think you’re good enough, or you’re insecure. maybe battling depression
There’s a portion of valuing self-esteem that can be a good thing. Everyone wants to be confident, and we should treat everyone as valuable. God created everyone in His image.
BUT the way that this idea is often used to find happiness, or even a version of salvation, is very contrary to the Bible.
let me share a couple quotes I found from popular psychology on this topic:
“You are imperfect, you are wired for struggle, but you are worthy of love and belonging." - Brené Brown
"Self-worth comes from one thing—thinking that you are worthy." - Wayne Dyer
"Believe in yourself and all that you are. Know that there is something inside you that is greater than any obstacle." - Christian D. Larson
These may sound good and partial right. These ideas are foundational to some things that seem normal:
I have a right to: go to school, vote, work, be happy
Our government actually got the idea of human rights from the Bible. that’s a good thing.
but when we start adopting all the things we have a “right to” that can easily lead us into entitlement.
and when that line of thinking get into how we see the world… there are some serious issues
it leads people to think things like - People are good. I am enough.
Romans 3:10–18 ESV
as it is written: “None is righteous, no, not one; no one understands; no one seeks for God. All have turned aside; together they have become worthless; no one does good, not even one.” “Their throat is an open grave; they use their tongues to deceive.” “The venom of asps is under their lips.” “Their mouth is full of curses and bitterness.” “Their feet are swift to shed blood; in their paths are ruin and misery, and the way of peace they have not known.” “There is no fear of God before their eyes.”

I am naturally evil and lost

Jeremiah 17:9 ESV
The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it?
Psalm 14:3 ESV
They have all turned aside; together they have become corrupt; there is none who does good, not even one.
KJV “They are all gone aside, they are all together become filthy: there is none that doeth good, no, not one.”
Romans 3:10–18 ESV
“Their throat is an open grave; they use their tongues to deceive.” (WORDS) “The venom of asps is under their lips.” “Their mouth is full of curses and bitterness.” “Their feet are swift to shed blood; in their paths are ruin and misery, (ACTIONS) and the way of peace they have not known.” (MIND) “There is no fear of God before their eyes.” (PRIDE)
ORIGINAL SIN
ADAM
Romans 5:12 ESV
Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned—
Psalm 51:5 ESV
Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, and in sin did my mother conceive me.
Genesis 6:5 ESV
The Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intention of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.
ACTUAL SIN
Romans 3:23 ESV
for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
1 Kings 8:46 ESV
“If they sin against you—for there is no one who does not sin—and you are angry with them and give them to an enemy, so that they are carried away captive to the land of the enemy, far off or near,
Ecclesiastes 7:20 ESV
Surely there is not a righteous man on earth who does good and never sins.
*turtle shell name car story*
why is this valuable? It’s not encouraging.. not the verses you make your wallpaper.
When you forget your need, you forget your savior. When you forget the bad news, you forget the good news. When you forget what the Bible says, you start to make up your own ideas.

What I need for life (salvation/worth/happiness?) can’t lie within myself

Ephesians 2:1 ESV
And you were dead in the trespasses and sins
Romans 6:23 ESV
For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Whatever good is in any of the children of men, or is done by them, it is not of themselves, it is God’s work in them.

Study

Psalm 14:1–3 ESV
The fool says in his heart, “There is no God.” They are corrupt, they do abominable deeds; there is none who does good. The Lord looks down from heaven on the children of man, to see if there are any who understand, who seek after God. They have all turned aside; together they have become corrupt; there is none who does good, not even one.
fool - lacking good judement
corrupt - most common sense is “damage/destroy” but here is it acting corruptly… or behaving in an immoral way
some translations use “filthy” - might be good to use for a point, it’s strong language
fallen away - act disloyally. turn back.
senses (personal reflection of what the big ideas in this are):
It foolish to not believe in God. Not believing in God will make you foolish.
God desires people to seek after Him.
No one truly seeks Him; no one is good.
further —
Our hope/healing comes not from looking inward, but from looking to Jesus.
inward is only bad / we need something outside of ourself
Romans 3:10–18 ESV

All have turned aside; together they have become worthless; no one does good, not even one.” (Ps 14:1-3) “Their throat is an open grave; they use their tongues to deceive.” (Ps 5:9) “The venom of asps is under their lips.” (Ps 140:3) “Their mouth is full of curses and bitterness.” (Ps 10:7) “Their feet are swift to shed blood; in their paths are ruin and misery, and the way of peace they have not known.” (Prov 16:1, Is 59:7-8) “There is no fear of God before their eyes.” (Ps 36:1)
quoted 7 different OT passages.

13&14 - Word/speech/mouth
15&16 - actions/ways
17 - mind
18 - pride/ego

2. What I need for life (salvation/worth/happiness?) can’t lie within myself
3. My worth is only found in God

Verses & Quotes

Mark 7:21–23 ESV
For from within, out of the heart of man, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, coveting, wickedness, deceit, sensuality, envy, slander, pride, foolishness. All these evil things come from within, and they defile a person.”
Psalm 34:16 ESV
The face of the Lord is against those who do evil, to cut off the memory of them from the earth.
Systematic Theology The Scriptural Account

It was because we died in Adam that we must be made alive in Christ.

1 John 1:8 ESV
If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
On total depravity-
Systematic Theology Second Argument from the Entire Sinfulness of Men

There is common to all men a total alienation of the soul from God so that no unrenewed man either understands or seeks after God; no such man ever makes God his portion, or God’s glory the end of his being.

1 Corinthians 2:14 ESV
The natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him, and he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned.
Ephesians 4:17–18 ESV
Now this I say and testify in the Lord, that you must no longer walk as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their minds. They are darkened in their understanding, alienated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them, due to their hardness of heart.
Good responses to this doctrine (contrary to modern “self worth”)
Psalm 38:1–8 ESV
O Lord, rebuke me not in your anger, nor discipline me in your wrath! For your arrows have sunk into me, and your hand has come down on me. There is no soundness in my flesh because of your indignation; there is no health in my bones because of my sin. For my iniquities have gone over my head; like a heavy burden, they are too heavy for me. My wounds stink and fester because of my foolishness, I am utterly bowed down and prostrate; all the day I go about mourning. For my sides are filled with burning, and there is no soundness in my flesh. I am feeble and crushed; I groan because of the tumult of my heart.
Psalm 130:3–4 ESV
If you, O Lord, should mark iniquities, O Lord, who could stand? But with you there is forgiveness, that you may be feared.
Psalm 51 —-
