Welcome to Vertical Church. A warm welcome to those who are watching online and those who watch throughout the week
Good morning.
Let Us Continue to Worship God
23 “Speak to Aaron and to his sons, saying, ‘Thus you shall bless the sons of Israel. You shall say to them: 24 Yahweh bless you, and keep you; 25 Yahweh make His face shine on you, And be gracious to you; 26 Yahweh lift up His face on you, And give you peace.’
Scripture Reading: Romans 8:28-30
31 What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who is against us? 32 He who indeed did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him over for us all, how will He not also with Him graciously give us all things? 33 Who will bring a charge against God’s elect? God is the one who justifies; 34 who is the one who condemns? Christ Jesus is He who died, yes, rather who was raised, who is at the right hand of God, who also intercedes for us. 35 Who will separate us from the love of Christ? Will affliction, or turmoil, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? 36 Just as it is written, “For Your sake we are being put to death all day long; We were counted as sheep for the slaughter.” 37 But in all these things we overwhelmingly conquer through Him who loved us. 38 For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Introduction:
10 ‘Do not fear, for I am with you; Do not anxiously look about you, for I am your God. I will make you mighty, surely I will help you; Surely I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.’
27 “My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me; 28 and I give eternal life to them, and they will never perish—ever; and no one will snatch them out of My hand. 29 “My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father’s hand.
(1) Seven questions: only one answer
Romans 8:31–35 (LSB)
What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who is against us? Will He not also with Him graciously give us all things? Who will bring a charge against God’s elect? Who is the one who condemns? Who will separate us from the love of Christ? Will affliction, or turmoil, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?
31 What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who is against us? 32 He who indeed did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him over for us all, how will He not also with Him graciously give us all things? 33 Who will bring a charge against God’s elect? God is the one who justifies; 34 who is the one who condemns? Christ Jesus is He who died, yes, rather who was raised, who is at the right hand of God, who also intercedes for us. 35 Who will separate us from the love of Christ? Will affliction, or turmoil, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?
What then shall we say about “these things”? -suffering, all things working together for good, the promises made in the order of salvation
Who is against us? Paul has a who, not a what in mind - Satan, the rulers of Rome, all haters of Christianity. The critics of Christianity over the last 100 years - His response - He gave His Son.
Will He not also graciously give us all things? His most precious possession, everything else pales in comparison
Who will bring a charge? God is the one who justifies - God has not only declared you righteous, he has imputed His righteousness to you
Who condemns? - Nothing compared to the one who intercedes for you. Jesus is praying for you
Who will separate us? - you re in union with Christ - you are in Him and He is in you
What about circumstances? - all of the above were experienced by Christ - the appearance of abandonment
The word if is used as a literary device to highlight the question who is against us? The answer: no one. God is for us
For us: not just cheerleading, not just happily staying out of your way as you try to do your best. He is for you: He watches over you, He walks beside you, He initiated the plan for your salvation, He Himself did what was necessary for your salvation, He guarantees the completion of your salvation - He gave His son Jesus for your salvation - every aspect of your salvation is given by the Father, Son and Holy Spirit because, say it with me, God is for US.
(2) Our praise: given to only one Person
36 Just as it is written, “For Your sake we are being put to death all day long; We were counted as sheep for the slaughter.” 37 But in all these things we overwhelmingly conquer through Him who loved us.
Psalm 44 is a response to vs 35 and the constant threat of death
All day long, Put to death, we are like defenseless sheep
For Your sake is referring to God - for His sake, for His glory
The idea is they are coming after some of you in the morning. They are coming after others in your church in the afternoon. They might come and kidnap you at night, and your family never sees you again.
But you are the victor
Overwhelmingly
ὑπερνικάω: to be completely and overwhelmingly victorious—‘to be completely victorious, to have complete victory over.’ ἐν τούτοις πᾶσιν ὑπερνικῶμεν διὰ τοῦ ἀγαπήσαντος ἡμᾶς ‘in all these things we have complete victory through him who loved us’ Ro 8:37.
Through Him
(3) No condemnation, no separation: only one eternal outcome
1 Therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.
38 For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
31 What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who is against us?
24 Yahweh bless you, and keep you; 25 Yahweh make His face shine on you, And be gracious to you; 26 Yahweh lift up His face on you, And give you peace.’
