Introduction

Turn with me to Genesis 5:21.
This year our theme is walking with God as dear children. As we have opportunity throughout the year I will be taking time to look at people who walked with God. We will examine their lives and see what we can glean from their lives about being followers of God.
In our lives it is easy to become distracted by our jobs, phones, hobbies, and even family that takes a way from our fellowship with God. As we discussed this morning in Ephesians 5:1 “1 Be ye therefore followers of God, as dear children;”, my vision for our church this year is that you and I would be a follower of God as a loved child. We would love God and want to please him. It is easy to get distracted from what is most important in life. But you, living for God’s glory is what is most important in your Christian life. How do we do that we look unto Christ our Wisdom. He is the principal thing if we will follow God as dear children.
In the life of Enoch we are going to discover that sometimes it is the major events in life that awakes us to the need of walking with God. For Enoch it was a having a son named Methuselah. After his Son was born, Enoch became serious about walking with God. It appears that he knew his responsibility as a father to raise his son for the Lord. However, before then his walk with God appears to have been inconsistent or non-existent.
Genesis 5:21–24 “21 And Enoch lived sixty and five years, and begat Methuselah: 22 And Enoch walked with God after he begat Methuselah three hundred years, and begat sons and daughters: 23 And all the days of Enoch were three hundred sixty and five years: 24 And Enoch walked with God: and he was not; for God took him.”
D. Methuselah’s birth was the wake up call to Enoch: I must walk with God.
P. My friend, if you have been wayward in your walk, inconsistent, determine by God’s grace 2026 is the year you are going to faithfully walk with God.
T. In the morning get up and choose seek Him first in your life. Do not live for yourself any longer. Get to know God personally through His Word. Then choose to obey it. If you and I are going to impact the people around us, you and I must have a committed and personal walk with God.
This evening we are going to look how Enoch got serious about God after his son Methuselah was born.

1. Choose to walk with God.

Explain

Choose at a point of decision to be faithful to seek God in your life.

Enoch started having a family when he came to grips that he needed to start personally walking with God. Notice the words of Genesis 5:22. “And Enoch walked with God after he begat Methuselah 300 years...”
His Son Methuselah was born and he realized how he was living was not going to helpful for his Son. The people of Enoch’s day had turned quickly away from following their Creator. They became about doing what ever pleased them. The birth of a little boy into his family awakened his need that he needed to be the right kind of Dad for His son and he started taking his relationship with God seriously.
Have you had a point in your life where you realized you need to take God seriously.
Have you accepted Jesus Christ as your Savior.
God gave the promise to Eve that of her seed there would come one to conquer the serpent. Genesis 3:15 “15 And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.”
Jesus came born of the virgin Mary, the seed of the woman, and conquered the serpent when he died for our sins on the cross for the sins of mankind. He blotted out the accusations written against us with his atoning blood. Then triumphantly rose again from the dead three days later showing his offering was accepted by God, the Father.
Perhaps you remember when your first child was born.
It was sobering experience to me not only to realize I was responsible to provide for their physical, but also spiritual wellbeing. Ephesians 6:4 “4 And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.”
Maybe it’s not a child but the start of your marriage or mid-life crisis and wakeup call that alerts you that you need to step up spiritually in your walk with God.
Husband, when you realize your responsible for the spiritual wellbeing of your wife and children it is sobering. Getting married forces a man to grow up, or at least should theoretically. Enoch walked with God. Husbands if you will lead your wife well, you must personally walk with God.
Turn with me to Genesis 6:8-9 and we find another man who walked with God. His name was...Noah. The Bible also mentions he was just and perfect or blameless in his generation. He had a great testimony for God.
Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord. Likewise, parent, if you will realize your responsibility to raise your child in the Lord’s way and humbly seek his help God will give you grace too. James 4:6 “6 But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble.”
Wife, when you realize you must follow your husband spiritually and seek to submit to his leadership. That is a walk of faith, especially if your husband isn’t spiritually minded.
Church and your Christianity is not just a little side hustle, but is your life. Colossians 3:4 “4 When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in glory.”
My friend, make this day if you haven’t already, the day you choose I will have a daily walk with God. I will take at least 15 minutes a day to seek God’s face.
Five minutes to pray
Five minutes to read the Bible
Five minutes to journal what God spoke to you about.
Matthew 6:33 “33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.”

Choose Personally - Enoch walked with God

Jared, Enoch’s Dad, may have followed God, but it wasn’t till Enoch had his son Methuselah that he chose to follow God.
When a big event happens in our life, like a move into a new house, marriage, having a child, or death of a loved one these events may be used of God to help us get our focus on what is most important. Do you know what is most important? It is having a right relationship with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. Without a reconciled relationship with God through Jesus Christ, you are headed for God’s judgment.
Enoch came to grips that his faith in God couldn’t be grandpa’s, dad’s, or Grandma Eve’s and his mother’s faith. He had to choose to walk with God for himself. While there were great people in Enoch’s life we cannot depend only on the relationship others have with God for our spiritual wellbeing. We must learn to walk with God for ourselves. Throughout Sunday Evenings in February we will continue this series on Men and Women who were followers of God. My goal is through these character studies that we will be helped practically in our walk with God.
Going to church, hearing preaching, or a Sunday School teacher are all good things, but they can never replace your personal and daily walk with God.
Application: Determine that this year you are going to walk with God more faithfully than you did last year.
Purpose before God to have personal daily devotions. If you have never done it, start small. Take five minutes. Soon you’ll find that you need more time. Your ability to focus and your desire for God will increase.
Psalm 119:1–2 “1 ALEPH. Blessed are the undefiled in the way, Who walk in the law of the Lord. 2 Blessed are they that keep his testimonies, And that seek him with the whole heart.”
Personally put away your phone, turn off the TV, and turn off the radio. Be still and quiet before God and take time to delight in him.
Start by praising him for who He is.
Read Psalm and pray it back to God.
Take your hymnal and sing it as an act of worship.
Thank God for what he has done for you.
Confess any sin in your life and ask for God’s help to stay far from it.
Pray for others spiritual needs.
Pray for your own needs.
Walking with God does not mean that you are deciding where to go and what to do, but that you are learning from God’s Word where God would have you go and what God would have you do. His Holy Spirit will guide you as you seek his face.
John 16:13 “13 Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.”
That being said, when you exercise is a great time to commune with God. You may go out walking on the trail, or do weights, or an exercise bike. In the quiet of exerting yourself physically is a wonderful time to commune with God in prayer and meditation on his Word. Personally, I find it a great time for Bible memorization and review. Whether I am on an exercise bike or going for a jog, those are some of the best times for me. What about you? Find a time that works best for you.

Choose to Pass it on

God doesn’t intend you to be a sponge. He wants you to pass the faith onto others.
2 Timothy 2:2 “2 And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also.”
Applications
Fathers and mothers diligently teach your children daily.
Proverbs 22:6 “6 Train up a child in the way he should go: And when he is old, he will not depart from it.”
Ephesians 6:4 “4 And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.”
Deuteronomy 6:6–7 “6 And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart: 7 And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.”
Dad’s and Mom’s have a family devotional time whether it be morning or evening and seek God together. Father’s you need to lead in this, much like Job led his family spiritually.

Choose to Please God

Hebrews 11:6 “6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.”
Enoch chose to please God and that was his testimony before others. Hebrews 11:5 “5 By faith Enoch was translated that he should not see death; and was not found, because God had translated him: for before his translation he had this testimony, that he pleased God.”
How much do I have to please God? Well, how much did Christ give for you. That is your answer. Give your all to God as He did for you.
Application: what testimony to you have before others? People know you by what you do. Even children are known by what they do. Proverbs 20:11 “11 Even a child is known by his doings, Whether his work be pure, and whether it be right.”
It is good to have a point where you recognize you need to seek God, make a personal effort, and pass on what you learn to others. But most importantly, you must live out God’s word in your life to please our God.
Jesus said in Matthew 4:4 “4 ....Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.”
Hebrews 11:6 “6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.”
When it comes to giving up an activity or pleasure for the sake of living holy for the Lord Jesus are you willing to do it? Or do you pick and choose how much you will obey God.
1 Corinthians 6:19–20 “19 What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? 20 For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.”
Apply
You were created for relationship with God. Will choose to seek Him?
You can know him personally.
Jeremiah 6:16 “16 Thus saith the Lord, Stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths, where is the good way, and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls. But they said, We will not walk therein.”
Jeremiah 29:13 “13 And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart.”
Isaiah 45:19 “19 I have not spoken in secret, in a dark place of the earth: I said not unto the seed of Jacob, Seek ye me in vain: I the Lord speak righteousness, I declare things that are right.”
Isaiah 48:16 “16 Come ye near unto me, hear ye this; I have not spoken in secret from the beginning; From the time that it was, there am I: And now the Lord God, and his Spirit, hath sent me.”

2. Compassionately warn of God’s judgment.

Jude 14–15 “14 And Enoch also, the seventh from Adam, prophesied of these, saying, Behold, the Lord cometh with ten thousands of his saints, 15 to execute judgment upon all, and to convince all that are ungodly among them of all their ungodly deeds which they have ungodly committed, and of all their hard speeches which ungodly sinners have spoken against him.”
Explain
The Lord is Coming: to do judgment and to convince sinners
To do judgment - John 5:26–27 “26 For as the Father hath life in himself; so hath he given to the Son to have life in himself; 27 And hath given him authority to execute judgment also, because he is the Son of man.”
To convince the ungodly of their ungodly deeds -
This word is used once in the NT
It is used twice in the OT as rebuke in context of rebuking nations for their sins.
It means to bring under conviction. Those who are convinced of God will know their sins are wrong. They will have no doubt, for they will be convinced. Romans 1:32 “32 Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them.”
God’s Forbearance
Methuselah - when he is dead it shall be sent.
Shows the patience of God for 972 years waiting.
Noah to complete the ark.
100 years to complete the ark
2 Peter 2:5 “5 And spared not the old world, but saved Noah the eighth person, a preacher of righteousness, bringing in the flood upon the world of the ungodly;”
Romans 10:14 “14 How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?”
Giving space of repentance.
2 Peter 3:9 “9 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.”
Revelation 2:21 “21 And I gave her space to repent of her fornication; and she repented not.”
Brothers and sisters, Jesus can come any moment. Are you sharing the good news that Jesus saves with others?
God extends grace in Christ. Romans 5:1 “1 Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:”
We, in Christ, must extend grace and truth to others. John 1:17 “17 For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.”
The Lord is also coming to defeat the Serpent.
The seed of the woman. Genesis 3:15 “15 And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.”
No doubt, Enoch looked in faith to that day when God would send His Son to defeat Satan and aright the sinful world.
Argument: They won’t listen to me.
Ezekiel 2:5 “5 And they, whether they will hear, or whether they will forbear, (for they are a rebellious house,) yet shall know that there hath been a prophet among them.”
Enoch did not see a huge revival from what I can see, but he was faithful to preach righteousness.
Noah was a preacher of righteousness. He didn’t see many converts, but at least his family was saved.
Illustrate: Others are listening, you may not even be aware of.
Apply
Christ is forbearing towards us. Am I forbearing towards others?
The spouse who doesn’t understand you.
The child who has pushed you to the limits.
The naughty child in the class room.
The coworker who knows how to pester you.
The sibling who is always picking.
The unsaved neighbor who needs loving when their unloving.
Will you choose like Enoch to warn them of Christ’s coming.
Christ’s testimony is spotless. He is without sin. So in like manner we are to mirror Christ. We talked of following God as dear children this morning. Practically that means living a holy life.
Ephesians 5:3–5 “3 But fornication, and all uncleanness, or covetousness, let it not be once named among you, as becometh saints; 4 Neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor jesting, which are not convenient: but rather giving of thanks. 5 For this ye know, that no whoremonger, nor unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, hath any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God.”
God wants us pursuing his righteousness, not just satisfied with salvation. Matthew 5:6 “6 Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.”
Christ is supreme. Christ defeated the serpent.
Are you living in submission to Him?
Are you satisfied in Him?

3. Confident whisking into God’s presence.

Explain
Enoch did not die.
Genesis 5:24 “24 And Enoch walked with God: and he was not; for God took him.”
Hebrews 11:5 “5 By faith Enoch was translated that he should not see death; and was not found, because God had translated him: for before his translation he had this testimony, that he pleased God.”
Some believe he may be one of the two witnesses in the end times.
Hebrews 9:27 “27 And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:”
Because of this they also conclude that Elijah must be the other witness because he was taken in a chariot to heaven and never saw death either. These are the only two men in the Bible to not die.
The bottom line is the identity of the two witness in Revelation 11 is not given. Although I find it quite possible that these may be their identity.
Enoch pictures the rapture of the Saints.
1 Thessalonians 4:13–17 “13 But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope. 14 For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him. 15 For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep. 16 For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: 17 Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.”
1 Corinthians 15:51–53 “51 Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, 52 In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. 53 For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality.”
Note: The second coming Christ comes with his saints whereas at the rapture he comes for his saints.
Rapture: John 14:1–3 “1 Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. 2 In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.”
Second Coming: Jude 14 “14 And Enoch also, the seventh from Adam, prophesied of these, saying, Behold, the Lord cometh with ten thousands of his saints,”
Argue
Illustrate: Christ is waiting for the Father’s nod to come and take us back to himself.
Acts 1:7 “7 And he said unto them, It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath put in his own power.”
John 14:1–3 “1 Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. 2 In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.”
Apply
Live a holy life
1 Peter 1:15 “15 But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation;”
Live expectant of his imminent return.
Christ could come at anytime: 1 Thessalonians 4:16–17 “16 For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: 17 Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.”
1 John 3:1–3 “1 Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not. 2 Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is. 3 And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure.”

Conclusion

Enoch chose to walk with God. He made it to a point in his life he realized. I can’t go without God. He chose personally to follow God. Pass it on to others. He chose to please God. Have you made the decision to have a personal walk with God?
While you may be saved and on your way to heaven, do you have compassion to warn others of God’s judgment, but also the hope in Jesus Christ?
Will you have confidence when your whisked away by the rapture and see Jesus face to face? Hebrews 10:35–36 “35 Cast not away therefore your confidence, which hath great recompence of reward. 36 For ye have need of patience, that, after ye have done the will of God, ye might receive the promise.” Don’t faint brothers and sisters in our walk with God. It’s a long marathon race, but it’s one God gives grace for each day. Choose to walk as Enoch did with God.
