Building the Right Foundation and Making Room for a Harvest
Building the Right Foundation and Making Room for a Harvest
Key Passage: Acts 2:42–47
Key Passage: Acts 2:42–47
INTRODUCTION
INTRODUCTION
Open your Booklet and look at page two where it says our prayers for 2026.
I am praying for 50 people to get saved.
I am praying for 30 baptisms.
I am praying that God would add to our number.
I don’t think that’s unspiritual.
I think that’s biblical.
But here’s what I’m more convinced of:
If God is going to entrust us with more people, He wants to make sure we have the right foundation.
Today is not about chasing numbers.
It’s about becoming the kind of church God gladly adds people to.
And the clearest picture of that kind of church is found in Acts 2.
SETTING THE SCENE
SETTING THE SCENE
Acts 2 is not a calm moment in church history.
It’s explosive.
The Holy Spirit has fallen.
The gospel has been preached.
Three thousand people have repented and believed.
Now imagine that.
Three thousand new believers. No buildings. No systems. No manuals.
The question becomes:
What kind of church does the Holy Spirit form when He is truly leading?
Acts 2:42–47 answers that question.
READ ACTS 2:42–47
READ ACTS 2:42–47
(Pause after reading)
What we just read is not an idealized version of church.
It’s not romanticized.
It’s the natural outcome of a Spirit-filled people.
1. A HOLY CHURCH IS DEVOTED BEFORE IT IS DYNAMIC
1. A HOLY CHURCH IS DEVOTED BEFORE IT IS DYNAMIC
“They devoted themselves…”
That word devoted matters.
It means steady.
It means intentional.
It means reordered priorities.
The Holy Spirit didn’t just give them power —
He gave them focus.
They were devoted to:
The apostles’ teaching
Fellowship
The breaking of bread
Prayer
This is holiness in Acts.
Not withdrawal from the world.
Not moral superiority.
Holiness here is belonging fully to God.
Let me say this clearly:
A church doesn’t drift into holiness.
It is drawn there by the Holy Spirit.
And without devotion, everything else becomes shallow.
2. A HEALTHY CHURCH LIVES WITH AWARENESS THAT GOD IS AMONG THEM
2. A HEALTHY CHURCH LIVES WITH AWARENESS THAT GOD IS AMONG THEM
“Everyone was filled with awe…”
That word awe tells us something.
God wasn’t theoretical.
He wasn’t distant.
He was present.
Healthy churches don’t manufacture excitement.
They cultivate reverence and expectation.
And look what flows from that:
“All the believers were together…”
Unity wasn’t demanded.
It was formed.
When the Holy Spirit is honored,
humility increases.
When humility increases,
division loses its grip.
Many church problems aren’t personality problems.
They’re presence problems.
3. A HEALTHY CHURCH LOVES IN TANGIBLE WAYS
3. A HEALTHY CHURCH LOVES IN TANGIBLE WAYS
“They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need…”
This wasn’t forced.
This wasn’t policy.
This wasn’t pressure.
This was the Holy Spirit opening eyes and softening hearts.
They didn’t just sing together.
They didn’t just meet together.
They carried one another’s burdens.
Healthy churches don’t ask,
“What do I get out of this?”
They ask,
“How can I help?”
This kind of love doesn’t come from guilt.
It comes from Spirit-changed hearts.
4. A HOLY & HEALTHY CHURCH CREATES A PLATFORM FOR GOD TO MOVE
4. A HOLY & HEALTHY CHURCH CREATES A PLATFORM FOR GOD TO MOVE
“Praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people…”
Notice something important.
They weren’t trying to impress outsiders.
They were worshiping God.
But when a church lives rightly before God,
people notice.
Then comes the line that matters so much to me:
“And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.”
Church, hear this carefully:
God adds to what He forms.
Growth is not something we produce.
It’s something God releases when the foundation is right.
Luke does not apologize for numbers.
He records them because people matter.
Salvation matters.
Baptism matters.
New life matters.
PUTTING IT ALL TOGETHER
PUTTING IT ALL TOGETHER
Let me say this as clearly as I can.
I am praying for God to add to our number.
I am praying for people to be saved.
I am praying for baptisms.
But I am praying just as hard that God would make us:
Devoted before we are dynamic
United before we are large
Holy before we are popular
Healthy before we are busy
Because growth that outruns health eventually collapses.
But growth that rises from a holy and healthy foundation
lasts.
VISION MOMENT
VISION MOMENT
So here is the vision I want you to hear:
We are not asking God for shallow success.
We are asking Him to form us deeply.
We want to be a church where:
The Holy Spirit is honored
Devotion is normal
Love is visible
Unity is protected
And lost people find Christ
And as that happens,
we trust God to add to our number
in His way
and in His time.
PERSONAL REFLECTION
PERSONAL REFLECTION
Let me invite you to quietly consider two questions:
Where might the Holy Spirit be calling me into deeper devotion?
Where might the Holy Spirit be calling us into greater health?
This isn’t about pressure.
It’s about alignment.
